Management Shake-up At Swiss

Mon Nov 24, 2003 8:17 am

Hey guys,

Just read that William Meaney is leaving SWISS  Sad

I always liked Meaney and thought he did a great job at SWISS pushing for membership in oneworld and also for creating the new Swiss in Europe concept.

Here's the link: http://www.swiss.com/web/IE6/about-swiss/sw-nw-pr-press-releases-03.htm?newsid=33652

Anybody have any other info or ideas as to why he left?

I just read in the infamous Sunday press that he was trying to take over as CEO, but that the board didn't agree to this...

Is there any truth to any of this???

Don't know anything about the management shake up but I have 3 questions:
1)How much of the current SWISS is still made of the former swissair? Are the staff mostly all former swissair staff?
2) Why didn't they just keep the brand of SWISSAIR, which had the reputation of one of the greatest airlines in the world? I remember that in the 70s, and 80s, they were the ones to beat in terms of service, etc...
3) why is the company in such a mess still? Is it a union thing, or inefficiencies, or mismanagement? Are things salveageable?

It's always so sad to see a quality airline fold and although I've never flown swissair, they must have been an incredible airline as I've heard so many wonderful things about them.

I read that Meaney was trying to become CEO, too, and that's the reason why he leaves - although I read it on saturday already  Big grin - still the source was probably just as "infamous" (Blick).

I always liked Meaney and thought he did a great job at SWISS (...) for creating the new Swiss in Europe concept.
Well this new concept is not successful at all: Passenger don't like it to pay for service on a "quality" airline, it gives SWISS a reputation as low-cost (and low-quality?) airline, yes the load factor has increased, flights are full, but full of people who don't pay very much...

For the current fleet of Swiss International, check http://www.aerpix.net/AP/SwissFleet.htm

It's always up-to-date and excellent to check the current livery of each individual aircraft in the fleet!

Yeah, I was surprised reading the news of Meaney's departure. It seems like he was only there 12 months and yet took Swiss into 1-World (a good thing in my obviously biased opinion) and introduced EBC "European Business Concept". With a vastly improved website at swiss.com and much lower fares, you'd say on balance he's done a better job than many others in Basel.

If you look at the bigger picture, Swiss has gone from "Destination Excellence" to becoming Europe's latest low-cost airline. I can't say that removing free food and drink has exactly made me happy, but the new low fares have certainly made lots of others happy.

The old Swissair was an innovator: first B747-300 operator in the world, ditto for A310, first European carrier into China etc. Maybe, just maybe Meaney's helped lay the ground for what other European "full-service" airlines will look like in 5 years time.

Over and out from the one and only Unique Airport.

Hi!

Unique, great site about SWISS fleet. I wonder if you can give me any details about MD11's and the next on line to leave SWISS. I say this because they got already HB-JME and I presume JMD will be comming really soon with JMF also close by. If you have any feedback I would like to know.
