Frontier Airlines Second Hub?

Mon Nov 24, 2003 12:11 pm

What are the possibilities that Frontier Airlines will want to set up a second hub? and what cities do you'll think they would consider?

I would say 50/50,either will or won't. But if they do, I would think perhaps maybe somewhere in between NE and Great Lakes area. I would choose Dayton,I'm not sure, but I bet they have some non used gates, etc. Is there any old Piedmont areas still unused?
This would be a good area between DL/CVG,CO/CLE,US/PIT,TZ/IND,MDW,WN/CLE,MDW,NW/DTW. But,then again, it could end up like HP in CMH.

Well, now that the gate issue at DEN has been resolved, and F9 will be getting more gates, I suspect that a 2nd hub will be put on the backburner for a while. Furthermore, I think the 2nd hub idea was announced in order to force Denver's hand in resolving the issue on gates with UA.

Yes, I think the second hub idea is dead (for now anyway).

DAY does not have the O&D to support a hub.

Steven:

We agree!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Well, we almost agree. Yes, I think the second hub was partially to force the issue at DEN.

At the same time, Frontier CEO Potter has said that he is always looking at the possibility of branching away from DEN - but that he keeps coming home to DEN.

Howsumever, the gate issue is really only resolved for now. With the number of new aircraft ordered, there's some feel that within two or three years - four years tops - Frontier will be crunching the gates again.

cheers

PIT and STL were discussed awhile back just to give the F9 officials a little leverage with the DIA airport authority. With the gate situation resolved in DEN, PIT supposedly having some type of LCC startup termed "project roam", and as far as STL goes it will be more of a wait and see approach as to what WN and AA does. So for right now.....a second hub is pretty much dead.

I honestly think that if they did go with a second hub, STL would probably be where they would go. With American getting rid of some of it's STL flights, plus I don't think Frontier would want to lose some of it's identity by going to far east right now. However I do agree with most of you that a second hub is not a priority for Frontier right now.

Why is everyone stuck on STL? The only reason I saw STL being successful in the past is because of the fact that this was one of TWA's largest hub (most passengers who passed through STL one TWA, were connecting passengers). When AA took TWA over, notice how the numbers out of STL started to drop. STL doesn't fit the AA route structure as well as it did for TWA because of the ORD and DFW hubs. However, you look at TWA route structures, most of their flights went in and out of STL.
