Watching Aircrafts While On Vacation

Mon Nov 24, 2003 6:45 pm

This autumn I went on a trip to Athens for vacation. For staying I choosed a campground at Rafina, which is located direct under the flight path of departing aircrafts, so that it was possible to watch the departing flights from my tent while enjoying the beach and sun.

Are there any other campgrounds worldwide, from where it is possible to watch the departing or arriving aircrafts? Specially I am interested to know that for area of bigger airports.

Thanks for any information!

Regards

Hi KAL744,

this is not a bigger airport, but there is a camp site right under the flight path at Lugano Switzerland. Airport is called Agno, but I dont think they get too much traffic there.
The flights come in really low over the camp site, I didnt know the airport was so close so the first time it scared the **** out of me!!! Big grin

Guten Tag KAL744,

NCE is a good location. There is not a campsite or so near the airport but you can spend whole day spotting at the beach either at the south side or the north side.

At LCA, you can do sunbathing and spotting/photographing of approaching aircraft. There is also a beach restaurant where you enjoy food and drinks while taking pictures without even moving! Great place!

Traverse City State Park is very close to Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City Michigan.

Not right under the flight path, but, pretty close to the airport, this is a great getaway during the summer months. Especially the first week in July, the National Cherry Festival. The airport is busiest in the summer. Airline flights triple, business jet traffic is steady. We have an Airshow, with the Blue Angles, over West Grand Traverse Bay.

Hi KAL744,

Can you give me the address of the campsite in Athens?
Did you do some photographing there? That`s risky business out there. There were 2 spotters arrested before, an Englishman and a Dutchman. They were taking pictures at an AFB.

Speaking of spotting while on vacation, I am always amazed at pictures of SXM. Some day before I die, I want to also stand in the jetwash of a landing 747.  Smile

Aviationfreak,

The address for information on the Campground is:

http://www.gocamping.gr/camp/campsite.asp?id=114

The name of the campground is Kokkino Limanaki and it is located direct on the beach of Rafina. Direct beside the campground there is also a small hotel, called "Hotel Bravo", where you can stay for quite low price. It's not modern hotel, but it is clean and you can get balcony with sea view.

To go to the campground just go out of the airport. Exit 5, than to the right. Around 100 m walking you will find bus stop to Rafina port. From there just take a taxi to the hotel or campground. It's about 20 minutes walking from town and port of Rafina, or 5 minutes by taxi.

Aviationfreak,

I forgot, there is no problem with shooting pictures at or around ATH. Just don't make pictures in Greece around military airbases!

Maiznblue757,

Traverse City looks quite nice but also seems to be over crowded in summer. Anyway, thanks for your help!

Anyone has information about campgrounds near FRA, ZRH, AMS, LAX, ICN, SYD and so on ?

Regards

It is crowded. That's the best part. LOL. It attracts over 600,000 people for the week long event. If you don't want to go then, wait a week after, its still crowded, but, not as crowded.

You don't have to go to Traverse City just for Festival. There are about 5 good months of weather that you can go there and watch G.A. and small passenger aircraft traffic. There is a good deal of G.A. in and out of there during the summer. There are several places around there to sit, watch and take photographs.

Hi,

I found this one: http://www2.stadscampings.nl/amsterdamsebos/en/index.lp?p=algemeen
I think this one is the closest to AMS. This camping is situated near Schiphol East where the maintenance area is and Fokker was/is. The Main terminals and the new runway are exactly on the other side of the airport.
There are busses constantly driving around the airport to connect the main terminals, Schiphol East, end the long term parking lots.

cheers

Hi,

I think it's a very good place for spotting "Het Amsterdamse Bos Camping". I think there is also a big park around the area. I think coming year I will check the place.

Thanks a lot for the page !

Cheers

I know this Tiger119. I am from TVC. But, there is no better way to experience Traverse City than going to the NCF the first part of July.
