AZ Announces New Routes

Tue Nov 25, 2003 12:13 am

AZ just announced that it will start new routes during the summer timetable.
IAD
NYC
YYZ
DEL
BOS

Of course NYC, YYZ and BOS are already served. BOS and YYZ from MXP and NYC (JFK/EWR from both MXP and FCO).

I assume that BOS and YYZ will get additional seasonal service from FCO.
DEL and IAD definitely from MXP. JFK will probably get an extra flight from FCO summertime.

Also, MAN, LUS, ARN and CPH will re-open, probably from MXP.

Also, AZ board said that ALL 767s seats will be changed and all 767s will have 25 business class seats.

I guess they will get similar-to-777 seats.
Hopefully!
Hopefully the Eurofly 767s with the low-profile Coral Class will fully become AZ 767s

I heard a rumor some time ago that when AZ would come back to Scandinavian (at least ARN) it would be with the E170. Any news on this?

Is this an official press release?

Alitalia has NOT stated anything on the following websites-

http://www.alitaliausa.com
http://www.alitalia.it

It seems rather odd that there would be a press release as to new service and that would not be reflected on the companys website!

In addition-

What happened to the return of SFO-MXP on the 777?

What happened to the resumption of Australian service on the 777?

It just seems a suprise that there was no mention of -

Kuala Lumpur
San Francisco
Sydney

The route to IAD id very questionable. The IAD, and its surrounding area does not have a major Italian community. And with the service only running in the summer season... It just doesnt sound quiet so profitable. How is Alitalia going to feed traffic into this flight? There is no major SkyTeam presence at IAD!

Associated Press
Alitalia to offer new flights to US, Canada, India, Europe
Monday November 24, 10:57 am ET

ROME (AP) -- Italian flagship carrier Alitalia SpA said Monday it would offer new flights starting next summer, mainly on its long-haul routes to North America, saying recent terrorist attacks in Turkey haven't had a major impact on airline traffic.

The state-controlled airline said long-haul routes will increase 33 percent after more flights are introduced to Washington, Toronto, Boston, New York and New Delhi. Short- and medium-haul flights will rise 8 percent with new flights to Copenhagen, Manchester, Stockholm and Luxembourg.

As part of the reconfiguration, Alitalia's 13 B767 long-haul planes will have more comfortable business and economy class seats. The business class of Alitalia's MD80 medium-haul planes will be removed to free up more space in economy class.

IAD is meant to serve the business community and not the VFR market, which is not very profitable anyways.
And the MXP-IAD wouldn't be seasonal.
Additional YYZ, JFK and BOS from FCO will be seasonal.

The story in the italian version is more detailed:
Summary:
Washington : 7 weekly 767 flights
Rome - JFK : second daily flight
Rome - Boston: 5 weekly flights
Rome - Toronto: daily flights

(AGI) - Roma, 24 nov.

As I said before, they changed a bit their plans  Big grin
The 767 will have PTV in both economy and business (leather seats similar to the 777 one) but business will be 2-2-2 instead of the actual 2-1-2.

They abandoned the prospected MXP-II International (KRK / EPKK), Poland">KRK and MXP-PVG flight; anyway, returns to SFO, LAX and SYD were just rumors, never stated officially.
There was some statement regarding KUL, but they lasted a week or so. Not to speak of YUL.

ARN was almost sure to return, but maybe it won't be on E70 as planned (VCE, the 321 is far far too big, maybe even the 320...), since they are coming in very late (feb '04 due to Honeywell and Embraer problems); suprise it's CPH as it was never mentioned before (but our little prayers seem to have been listened!). MAN and LUX were mentioned less than a month ago.

Last note, DEL flight it's under approval by Indian government, so it's not still 100% sure.

The route to IAD id very questionable. The IAD, and its surrounding area does not have a major Italian community.

Washington is the 4th largest metro area in the US. This flight will exist to service O/D business interests, not low-yield VFR. UA served IAD-MXP with a 777 up until they decided to close certain foreign outstations.

Skyteam has a brisk business at IAD. Delta services IAD extremely frequently, both AF and KE fly there, and if you count them KL and NW have served IAD-AMS for many years.

What is the deal with China?
Any MXP-China flight would be overbooked for months, mostly by business customers.
Somebody must have lost its mind in AZ's management.
The UA's MXP-IAD has always been a real success, it has been withdrawn only because of UA's financial struggling.

PS: The Italian community in Washington is pretty big, but surely not the biggest in the US (of course, that's New York).

UA never operated the IAD-MXP with 777, just 767. But the route was going extremely well, as there were plans to switch to 777 before they closed MXP station. They also promised to bring a daily 777 from ORD... never mind.
But I agree, IAD it's a UA hub with strong feeding behind it, so we'll wait and see how does AZ perform on the route.

The problem with China is that AZ need at least 2 aircraft to operate a single city on a daily basis: they know very well that Italian business men traveling to China go on AF, LH and KL... but if you cannot support efficiently a route (lack of frequencies, smaller aircraft, etc) it's better to put your money on other routes (DEL, IAD). That said, I do agree about the madness of some AZ top managers...

Last: KAL744, AZ won't restart SYD in near future, deploy 2 or more machine for a classic low-yield route like SYD would be an economical suicide! Moreover now that AZ has a limited number of longhaul aircraft.

UA did use the 777 during peak travel months on IAD-MXP, though for much of the route's history and in the off-peak time, it was a 763.

Has it been confirmed that the AZ will be MXP-IAD and not FCO-IAD?

DaV,

United Airlines did operate the 777-200 into Malpensa! It was not flown for very long however.

United Airlines may be loosing out big time if Alitalia can prove IAD as a source of business!

United Airlines has been looking at re-introducing service and most definitely out of IAD!

I personally flew on the UA 777 MXP-IAD in June 2000.

POTOMAC

It'll be MXP-IAD. AZ has been saying that all new routes will be out of MXP and FCO will get additional summer services instead (in this case JFK, BOS and YYZ).

The "rumor" the AZ would return to SFO in the summer of 2004 was just that, a "rumor". There was no substance to this finding. Only an airline knows where they are going to fly or not going to fly. I wish people would stop posting these type of announcements until an airline actually releases their intentions.

As far as the re-introduction of San Francisco. It is imprtant to take note that Alitalia is now becoming a part of SkyTeam.. Having said that the number of Italians on any given day into San Francisco via BA,AF,KL,LH is very impressive!

Perhaps Alitalia will bank on DL,KL, and AF to feed all of the West Coast traffic!

DaV,

Perhaps you more than anyone would know more about Alitalia...Growing up in Verona.. There was always a sea of international charters.... Didnt Alitalia serve Verona or was it ATI?

Do you remember back in the 1980's there would be a whole fleet of 747 aircraft lined up at Malpensa..

Alitalia
Olympic
Pan AM
TWA

At the same time you would have seen

British Caledonian
A300
Cubana
IL62
Saudia
L1011

Those truely were the good old days... It very nice however to see the growth that Malpensa has recieved... It now can very effectively compete with Zurich, Vienna, and Brussels!

LHR001-very understandable your point, but AZ had a very large load factor on the non-stop MXP before 9/11. I knew 2 agents here with them, and there station manager was quite surprised on them pulling out. Maybe someone here can provide the load factor percentage and how the route did. I know for a fact that many non-rev had to jumpseat to MXP due to great loads. To back up what you are saying though, it may make sense since it is rumored AF will be adding another flight. Its just veru dissapointing, AZ was a real favorite here in the SFO area, they really dissappointed us.

To be honest Alitalia pulling out of the West Coast was a very bad and hasty...

Alitalia went from daily MD-11 at LAX, and 767-300 at SFO to nothing at all!

At the same point, you have to admit that management at Alitalia has neevr been known for outstanding decision making. Look for example at Alitalia pulling out of Rio de Janeiro, Sydney, Melbourne, Tapei, Manila, Santiago, Lima, Quito, Bogota, Santo Domingo, and Seoul! Not to mention what they did when they pulled the plug on Hong Kong!

Hopefully, under the new management they will see changes for the better. Perhaps you are seeing the same trend as me... The new flights to YYZ, JFK, BOS, IAD, and DEL can all easily be flown as a day turn and back in 20 hours. The Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Hong Kong services ran at a near 29 hour turn. Maybe that is the reason for the reduction...

Service to DEL would likely daily with 767.

Lhr001, I'm young, my hobby for aviation comes even late in the teenage (16/17)! Now I'm 21... I wish I could see all the heavies out of MXP (some friends of mine were talking last weekend of the charter and scheduled traffic in the good old MXP and LIN... TWA... PanAm... A300 and 767 usually visitors in LIN...). I can tell you for sure that AZ is going to reintroduce Roma FCO-Verona flight (and will fight against Meridiana...).

Check email please!

There are a lot of factors that go into the decision making of new long-haul routes.

The costs on long-haul routes are substantially high, not just money-wise, but resource-wise as well. We're talking about the staff that would be used to operate the route and aircraft.

I'm sure that SFO is a potential route for AZ. But I believe they have other priorities which is why they did not announce SFO.

It's all about efficient utilization of resources. Perhaps SFO would have reduced the efficiency considerably for this round. I'm sure in the future AZ will restart SFO.

AZ at YUL turned out to be nothing but hype then.  Insane

Say what you will, discussions are continuing.

Apparently AZ thinks that AC will go ahead with YULFCO this summer.

IF AC now wants a part of Italy, it has no choice but to serve it from YUL as per the Canada-Italy bilateral.
