Northwest DC-10s - Opinions?

Tue Nov 25, 2003 3:15 am

I have the pleasure(?) of taking a NW DC-10 this February on my annual skiing jaunt (routing MAN-AMS-BOS-AMS-MAN with KL codeshare on the BOS flights).

The AMS-BOS-AMS flight is on a NW D10, was just wondering what peoples opinions on these rather old birds is? Last time I went on a DC-10 was as a teenager going to Florida on Monarch from MAN, so memories are a little vague apart from it being a little cramped at 3-4-3.

Also, is there any chance whatsoever that by February this route may have been upgraded to an A333? Or is that wishful thinking?!

Thanks.
I used to love the smell of Jet-A in the morning...

NW's DC-10 seating is 2-5-2, and I don't think they are that cramped, although it's been a while since I've sat in the middle section.

I have flown them numerous times across the pond and have no problem with them. Yes they are 2 - 5 - 2 so get a window seat and you will have no problem. No IFE the on the DC10's. If you do get one of the new airbus's they have IFE's.

Northwest Airlines take excellent care of its Douglas DC-10 fleet. The DC-10 fleet is now been flown on the following routes-

MSP-HNL
MSP-AMS
MSP-LGW
DTW-CDG
DTW-LGW
DTW-AMS (along with A330)
NRT-SEA
NRT-SFO
NRT-HNL
SEA-HNL
SEA-OGG

There are other routes as well. The DC-10 and its interior are very well preserved. The restrooms are rather nice and spacious even by todays standards. The galleys and work areas are rather nice as well!

The NW DC10 in service have a 2-5-2 configuration in economy and likely a bit more leg room that the Monarch DC10 of your memories......the NW DC10 interiors went through an upgrade about 5 to 7 years ago, to standardize the look (NW acquired its DC10-30s second hand from a variety of sources) but now look a bit dated but are rather comfortable. The inflight entertainment system is a throw-back to earlier times, no PTVs here, instead big screens to watch the movie (kind of fun) and inflight service is average to good on most NW long-haul flights in my opinion (so much depends on the crew).

I dont think that you will see an equipment swap and fly a new A333.....the first aircraft are now flying Detroit-Amsterdam (3 flights per day I think), and the A333s will start flying the Detroit-Frankfurt/Paris/London routes next....it may be while until routes like BOS-AMS get new aircraft.

I rode a DC10 AMS-MSP-AMS over easter 2002, and they were perfectly fine aircraft. I didn't think they were any more cramped than any other planes I've been on. Only thing must be that the NWA FAs are starting to get old  Big grin

Well, you will indeed be "a little cramped". But the DC10 is configured 2-5-2, not 3-4-3.
And while that is uncomfortable, have you been in the back of a new 777 lately? Fact is, economy is hell these days, on all planes.

The A-330's will only be operating out of Detroit when you take your trip, so if you're on Northwest, you be flying with McDonnell Douglas.

Northwest is using DC10's between San Francisco and Tokyo at present. And while we flight attendants hate this plane (mostly because we miss the crew bunks on the 747's), I'm amazed at how many passengers will ask me after boarding "Is this a new plane?"

So while passengers on your venerable "10" may once have watched the newly-released 'Saturday Night Fever', the aircraft will be clean and well-maintained.

I'd suggest approaching your trip in a retro state of mind; much as you would if you were crossing the Atlantic aboard a Constellation. ANYONE can fly to Europe aboard a new Boeing or Airbus, but only Northwest can offer you the airborne nostalgia of the 1970's! Wear your best bell-bottoms and groove!

Dont knock the 70's

Who else can remember -

Upper Deck Lounges on the 747?

Stand Up Bars on the 747?

They were very good times... and we seemed to have forgotten them all to soon!

When you flew First Class on a DC-10 in the 70's it was the real thing... Meats carved next to you... Ice sculptures... Frech flowers... It truely was an experience!

Thanks for the opinions, I feel a little better about flying on the DC-10 now. Sure will be nice to once again say that I've been on one.... was so sure that flight with MON in 1996 was going to be the last time for me.

I will have the "luxury" of PTVs etc... on a DL 772 in April.

I've crossed the pond quite a few times on NW's DC-10 from BOS to AMS and back. Economy was cramped and the seats were hard. I didn't care for it at all. The crew was very nice though.

Interior-wise and service-wise the NW DC-10's match up just the same as the run of the mill 767's everyone else is flying across the Atlantic these days.

Sounds like SQ, or any other airline's, economy class....

I'm still waiting for somebody to tell me which airline has tons of room and comfortable seats in Economy class...

I hate the DC-10's. Old, dirty, uncomfortable, no IFE. I've flown on DC-10's several times, only twice with NW. Both times were SEA-MSP & MSP-SEA, and I was not impressed. I don't think I could take being on it for 10 hours to AMS. I would much rather be on a more modern bird such as the 777, A330 or A340.

...I hate the DC-10's. Old, dirty, uncomfortable, no IFE....

The DC-10 within NW's fleet were delivered to the airline second-hand from 1991-2000. These aircraft have brand NEW interiors. And they absolutely have IFE. I fail to see how these aircraft are "dirty" -- flown on a UA, DL or US aircraft across the pond lately? And again, you just made the same claim as everyone else -- 777 and 330 are more comfortable -- and I'm waiting for you to back it up... I've yet to be in a comfortable economy class... and don't say PTV, becuase less than 1/2 the flights across the Atlantic (other than those between to/from London) have PTV.

The DC-10 you flew on were the older -40, which were retired last fall.

I just love the good old NW DC-10s! I've had my most memorable flights on them and enjoyed it all the time, especially when they still used to serve Dr.Pepper on board  Smile. Does any airline still do that by the way?
Well, I'm sure the new A330s are more comfortable but most likely not half as exotic to fly on these days. After all, you don't get to fly on DC-10s a lot anymore. Consider yourself lucky to fly on one.
The seating on the NW DC-10-30 in coach was ok for me (6' tall) and in WorldBusiness it was more than ok Big grin Service was mostly good, too and the entertainment system is functional as well. Of course PTVs are better but they show the most recent movies so there is nothing to complain about.
I flew them on BOS-AMS too and always found them to be a very good option out of BOS. On domestic routes with NW I try to fly on DC-10s, too and I never worry about their age, I'm sure NW's maintenance takes good care of them.

NW DC-10s are way to go! Too bad we have to see them leave in a few years...

I completely agree. You will have plenty of opportunities to fly on A330s and other modern widebodies in the future. Just be glad that you are getting to fly on a DC-10 and enjoy it. Not many of us will get to see the birds in the skies for much longer.

Well IP.. I haven't flown on the newer DC-10's, so I guess I can't speak for those. I thought they were almost all of the same class, I didn't know that the -40's were retired.

So I guess I'll make my previous statement provisional until I get to fly on one of the newer -30's.

But yes, I am going to say PTV. Because I know this may sound trite, but aside from price considerations, IFE/PTV's are the 2nd most important criteria when I consider flights. I've only made 1 transatlantic trip with another one coming up, and they are/were both on carriers with at least decent IFE. One was UA: YVR-ORD-LHR-MAN-LHR-ORD-SEA, (ORD-LHR-ORD were 777's) the other will be SAS: SEA-CPH-LHR-CPH-SEA (A340-300's and MD-80's).

So I guess it just goes to the fact that everyone has different priorities; IFE's are important to me while they may not be important to you.

I've done LGW-DTW-LGW on NW DC-10's and i'd say it was a comfortable ride, seat pitch was decent, probably 32 inch. When you enter the plane you would never realise you're in a plane that's nearly 30 years old, the new interiors make a massive difference. No in-flight entertainment, but at this moment you just have to marvel at this classic plane as it could disappear soon.

LHR001 you are certainly a world traveler. Every time you post your profile says you're from somewhere different. Since you joined up that I can remember you've been located near LHR, JFK, SFO, and now LAS! And you have recently taken a job in Real Estate when before you were in "international relations," and other times an insider in the aviation industry! Furthermore, yesterday you were between 36 and 45 years old, but today 21-25 years old. Hmm, you have discovered the fountain of youth, no? Perhaps you should consider dropping your week-long career switch in real estate to sell a patent on this fountain of youth you have found. Maybe not though, real estate can be quite lucrative. So, if you are 21-25 years old, how do you remember the ice sculptures in DC-10 aircraft from the 1970's?

YOU WEREN'T EVEN BORN YET!!!!!!!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

People its a damn forum, don't bother lying on your profiles it just isn't important. It is mildly amusing, however.

I know that Northwest flew there DC10's into Phoenix once a day but now I think that they replaced it with there new 757's. Every thing I saw there DC-10 land at PHX it was a sight to see well cleaned and polished it looked like it just rolled of the assembly line.

I've been on Northwest DC-10s quite a few times...last time was a few years back but I remember the experiences were always great. Nice aircraft to fly on...I preferred it over the NW 742s and 744s I've been on. I flew on them between SEA and KIX...enjoyable flights. Crew and airport staff also did a great job.

NWA;
DC10's are clasic though slowly fading memory at AMS. My dad used to fly them a lot, was not pleased at all with their C product, old crappy interior & service. Since the revamp(finished approx 3 years ago) it has improved slightly. The crew are indeed old and sometimes grumpy(on board); i have driven them to their hotel on numerous occasions, but then again i had quite good experiences. But i can understand that during work they might be slightly uninterested/boring. Usually a couple were really great, whilst the rest would slump around.

I've been on both the -30s and the -40s, on 5 domestic flights, and have loved every minute of each flight. I'd take a classic (and soon becoming rare) Diesel 10 over the 330s anyday. The planes were clean, relatively new looking, and the crew were very friendly. Rick767, you're lucky you'll have another chance to fly in the DC-10. Enjoy your trip!

I've flown the NW DC-10 to MSP twice and both times it was a great experience. Come to think of it I've also flown the NW DC-10 from LAX-MSP again it was a very pleasant experience.

The interior was very spacious and clean despite lack of PTV but hey so what, this is an old bird but it stands up very well by todays standards.

I found that the seating arrangements were rather excellent 2-5-2, my wife and I always had great views, better than 3-4-3. I also found that the DC-10 seemed more spacious and airy then even the 742 belonging to NW.

The DC-10 is a true classic and will be sorely missed once it's finally gone.

Those DC-10s sound nice. One of the things I like about NW is the fact that their fleet is so interesting, with the DC-9s, DC-10s, even two 747-200s that will for the next few months still carry passengers before being converted to freighters.

PanAmerican, I believe a few US carriers offer Dr. Pepper. I cannot remember if Delta had it or not offhand. Dr. Pepper is my favorite soda and it's very hard to obtain in Europe, the only places where I have found it have been in England and a small store at the railway station in Stockholm. In the USA however you can get it at most stores and also many restaurants serve it.

If the choice is between a NW DC10 or a 767 I think the only reason I'd pick the 767 is because of the 2-3-2 seating. Otherwise, as someone said, it won't be too much longer you can fly on DC10's, so enjoy while you can. Strange, actually, that the MD11's are going away quicker than the older DC10's.
PTV's, though, are nice on any flights, especially a long one, so therefore a 777 or 330/340 are my first choices. It really makes the flight go quicker, and when sitting in coach that is usually a good thing.
The DC10 and the 747 are the most distinctive looking planes left now that the L1011, 727 and Concorde are pretty much gone.

Isn't it true that NW now has one of the oldest fleets in the modernized world?!?

Damn you have a young grandmother Smile/happy/getting dizzy. How old is she 15?16?20?

Aside from the DC-9s, NW has the youngest mainline fleet in the US now because of all the new 319s,320s and 753s.

While NW might have one of the "oldest fleets in the modernized world," Their oldest DC-10-30 still operating is N229NW which was built in 1972. N244NW and N243NW are the newest ones built in 1988. These are newer than some 737 and 767s that some airlines are operating. As stated in above posts, they were standardized with new interiors only 5 or so years ago. What you see on the inside is not much different than any other aircraft. They might be old to you, but they are still airworthy and plenty flyable as far as I'm concerned.

I flew one in 2001, DTW-FRA and while it was a substitution for a 744(I think), it was not bad at all. It had a Brand New interior-even smelled new. I said it before in an earlier post- I thought it was going to be a Dumpy-Stinky DC-10, and was very pleasantly surprised. The IFE was a little out-dated, but it worked. Great Flight! And the 2x5x2 in Y wasn't bad. I found it to be more roomy than the 777 in Y. Enjoy your trip !

NW will be the largest A32S operator by 2005... their A319/A320 fleet by itself is larger than that of the fleets of most airlines in the world... this is something that most a.net users fail to realize.

I think this quote sums up my feelings:
...there are a over 10,000 airline buffs on this site but from what I can see 9,980+ tend to be much younger and their only concern is if they are going to have a PTV while flying to Grandma's house that is 1-2 hours away on the latest LCC and question why the fare can't be lower. - a.net user

Old... Not nearly as good for travelling as a 777 with those personal TV screens, yet fun for spotting.

Bucchinij - A good way of summing it up. Love spotting the DC10's, but when my butt is in the plane, I prefer the 777.

To clear up a DC10 routing post earlier - - NW DC10 fleet do NOT operate SEA-NRT routes. The only TPAC route is SFO-NRT on DC10, SEA continues to operate 747-200. Also the seasonal DTW-HNL is operated with DC10.

As for the comfort level . . . 777 seating in economy is also 2-5-2 on most carriers. IndustrialPate says best: Economy seating is ECONOMY seating. It's covered in different fabric and some have a different way of turning on the light but in the end, it's coach.

Be glad you're getting to fly on a DC-10 while you still can. Sure the 777 is more comfortable and quiter etc. the DC-10 is a classic. I flew an AA DC-10 in July 1999 HNL-LAX and i loved the experience.

Spring of 1990, MIA-LAX on a packed AA DC-10. It was the first time on a DC-10 and the only time that I have ever purposely drank liquor before a flight in order to make myself get on a plane. I was a vicitim of being conditioned by the media when the AA DC-10 went down at ORD in '79. Besides the feeling of anxiety of using every inch of the runway on takeoff, the flight was fantastic and painless. I'd fly on one again in a heartbeat.

I`m a big fan of those wonderful McDonell Douglas trijets. I flew in them when I was just a lad to make my yearly MEX-MAD visit for holidays. Of course this was flown in Aeromexico equipment but given that most DC 10`s are gono from mayor carriers I`m thankful (eternally) that NW is still flying them. They are so confortable and the lack of IFE doesn`t matter much to me. Actually I have flown in much modern 767`s, 777`s and 747`s and all I found were cramped seats. So much for modern fleets. I really miss the times when one could see DC-8`s, DC-9`s, DC-10's, classic 747`s, 707`s, 727`s , L 1011`s, VC-10`s, Tridents, and 1-11`s at the same time.
I`m planning a trip in a DC 10 next year before they are gone. I want to relive some memories.
