What Happened To The MD-10?

Tue Nov 25, 2003 5:55 pm

...a while back, I saw pics of a DC-10 freighter converted to a two-person crew (MD-11 cockpit) by Boeing, marketed as the MD-10 ? What happened to this project ? Has it seen some success or has it since been killed off ?

FedEx is the only operator of the MD10 to my knowledge. I believe the original plan was to convert most, if not all, of their DC10s to MD10s. The events of 9/11 changed all that. I wish I could say just were things stand on the project.

UTA-
The MD-10 program is alive and well. FedEx's original plan was to convert their ex-UA DC-10's first (I think) and if the upgrade proved to be well, then move on to others. You see them occasionally anywhere FDX flies the DC-10/MD-11 series into.

Externally, you won't see any difference. The reg numbers are different though. All of the aircraft that have reg numbers that are entirely numeric are still in the DC-10 configuration. The only way I can tell is by getting in the cockpit, seeing the "MD-10" on the nose, or in some cases, the fuel panel guages are different. Round as opposed to the rectangular ones used on the older DC-10s

MD-10Fs N370FE, N372FE and N394FE all with Aeronavali in Venice at the end of October 2003 either just converted or being converted... So the program is indeed alive and well.

A few of the DC-10s that were FedEx or ex-UA going into FedEx were converted to MD-10s here in AF Plant 42 (PMD / KPMD), USA - California">PMD at SR Technics. It was great to see some commercial a/c especially a 3-holer. But that didn't last as SR Technics finally closed its Palmdale Plant after surviving months w/o an investor ever since SR and its parent company went under. Will surely miss seeing those DC/MD-10s fly over us.  Crying
