Wonder If This Actually Happened

Wed Nov 26, 2003 1:22 pm

This one has probably been around before, but I think it is awesome done by BA (true or not)

--------------------

On a British Airways flight from Johannesburg, a middle-aged,
well-off white South African lady has found herself sitting next
to a black man. She called the cabin crew attendant over to
complain about her seating.

"What seems to be the problem, Madam?" asked the
attendant.

"Can't you see?" she said, "You've sat me next to a kafir. I
can't possibly sit next to this disgusting human. Find me
another seat!"

"Please calm down, Madam." the stewardess replied. "The
flight is very full today, but I'll tell you what I'll do. I'll
go and check to see if we have any seats available in club or
first class".

The woman cocks a snooty look at the outraged black man
beside her (not to mention many of the surrounding
passengers). A few minutes later the stewardess returns with
the good news, which she delivers to the lady, who cannot help
but look at the people around her with a smug and
self-satisfied grin.

"Madam, unfortunately, as I suspected, economy is full. I've
spoken to the cabin services director, and club is also full.
However, we do have one seat in first class".

Before the lady has a chance to answer, the stewardess
continues: "It is most extraordinary to make this kind of
upgrade, however, and I have had to get special permission
from the captain. But, given the circumstances, the captain felt
that it was outrageous that someone should be forced to sit
next such an obnoxious person."

With that, she turned to the black man and said: "So if you'd
like to get your things, sir, I have your seat ready for you..."

At which point, the surrounding passengers stood and gave a
standing ovation while the man walked to the front of the
plane . . .
“Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, an

Actually, http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/r/racistpassenger.htm has this listed as "unconfirmed" or "rumor" as they have not been able to prove it one way or the other. On the other hand, it is plausible and, even if false, is a feel-good story!  Big thumbs up

Good story, if this is true I bet that lady NEVER flies BA again, outrageous that she demanded an upgrade because of sitting next to someone she didn't like.

Yes, that indeed is a feel good story!

It makes me believe in the kindness of people and in justice. Even if the whole story is not true, I wish it were. Why do I wish it were true? A very simple answer: If more people showed personal courage instead of looking the other way, this world would be a much better place. Just my very humble opinion!

Do you somehow disagree?

This is a really old story that originally took place on a train. Somebody just updated it a little and said it was a BA flight. Whether it was ever true... I don't think anyone can know for sure.  Smile

IMHO Bloobirdie is right to ask "So lying and stereotyping is feel-good?"

We all know it's a feel-good story. But if this incident never happened, doesn't it unfairly serve to reinforce some stereotype of the "middle-aged, well-off white South African lady"?

snopes.com looks at these urban legends sensibly. See this link: http://www.snopes.com/travel/airline/obnox.htm. (Read how publishing this very story backfired on a New Zealand company!)

I hated the way Ronald Reagan had all these stories ("the welfare queen") to sell his programs ... but none of the stories were true.

Or how about the famous story of the lady who spilled the coffee and sued McDonalds? This story is used over and over again to negatively portray lawyers & their greedy clients in a negative light. Here is info about the case: http://www.atlanet.org/ConsumerMediaResources/Tier3/press_room/FACTS/frivolous/McdonaldsCoffeecase.aspx. After reading the info, the story is a bit more complicated than greedy lawyers & clients.

So yea ... sometimes it is important to know whether or not the incident actually happened before letting a story like this reinforce your views of the world.

I have heard of another anecdote - an exchange which purportedly took place many years ago in Swissair's F/cl cabin. There was this F/cl pax who called one of the stewardesses over and in complete earshot of all, queried.. "since when have Swissair started employing farmers' daughters as stewardesses on Swissair".

The lady flushed, adjusted her skirt and replied equally matter-of-factly... "since farmers like you started flying first class on Swissair, Sir !!".

Along with the BA story above which I've heard before, I have loved this one.

Its nearly 2004, and people still judge people by Color, That is disgusting and so totally wrong.Congratulations to British Airways if that story was true. If not, then so what, THat woman should be ashamed of herself. Im not black im a white man saying this. But for too long black men and women have had to put up with this crap and as a human being im tired of it.

Thats my two cents

What a fantastic story. I doubt it really happened, though, Bit TOO perfectly scripted. But if it did, then good on BA!
