Egyptair A380 Purchase?

Thu Nov 27, 2003 2:20 am

I was going through some aviation websites and found one that said Egyptair is thinking about place an order for 2 A380s. Does anyone know if this is true?

Egyptair is an expanding airline with 5 A320-200 on order (I think they got the first (8th in the fleet) in late October aswell as 7 A330-200 which were ordered in January that should be delivered from June next year. So is the A380 a possibilty?

Where the hell is Egyptair going to send 550 people a day? Maybe London? The trouble with this airline is they are so random - London (the capital of the Arab world btw) will get a 747-300 one day, an A321 the next.

That said, they operate one of everything, 767s alongside A300s, 777s alongside A340s. Why not an A380?!

I'd see it as unlikely, but not impossible. MS dropped its A340-600 deal to go for A330-200s, so it seems to be focusing on medium sized aircraft. If they were to go down that road, they would most likely go for A340-600s first.

First of all, they dont operate any B767s they gave the last one back to Boeing as a trade-in in a deal for further B777s. Also the A330s are replacing the A300s.

Second they can use A380s on the Saudi flights; Jeddah and Riyadh are served around 4/5 times daily using 747s and 777s by both Egyptair and Saudia Arabian Airline. In fact most Middle Eastern routes are served by wide-bodies (777, 747, 340s) so there could be a use for them here. They also operate 17 weekly flights to Germany. So all these could be a start.

Third, London is served daily from Cairo using B777 on five flights and the A300-600R on the other two. The 747 is used on their weekly Luxor trip and the A320/A321 on their weekly Sharm El Sheikh flights. Also Egyptair is trying to increase its flights to LHR (note BA use B747-400 on their flights).

Egyptair is govt-owned, hence an A380 order will not receive the same analysis & scrutiny as it would with a private sector carrier. It's hard to believe that any carrier can make a financial case for just 2 A380's. If this happens, it will be based on Egyptair prestige, ego or testostorone, ie. not financial sense.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

This is quite interesting. I had no idea Egyptair had such a lot of traffic to Saudi and around the ME. What do they use for flights to Beirut? Do they have a website?

Since Egyptair are planning to streamline the fleet ,seeing the removal of 777 and 743 types,i doubt the A380 is in the current plan.

If we hit the african continent, the most likely buyer would be SAA at some stage in the future.

They operate daily flights to Beirut using A320s from Cairo. They also have scheduled flights to Sharm El Sheikh (this resort is very popular with the Lebanese people)and occasionally to Luxor and Hurghada.

Cedarjet,

What do they use for flights to Beirut?

They fly the A320 on a daily basis from Cairo. On Wednesday, the flight makes a stop in Alexandria.

In the summer, they operate A340s and 777s.

I don't see A380s for Egyptair. I think that if MSR wants to go widebodys, most likely they will replace their 777 AND 743 with A346HGW or (may be and) the A345. The A380 is too big and they would not fill it easily. I can see Egyptair being interested in a COMBI A380 though.

-I know egyptair took delivery of FOUR A320S. Does any one know when the fifth one will be delivered?

They can use the A380s on the following routes (year round):
CAI-Jeddah
CAI-Riyadh
CAI-Dubai
CAI-Kuwait City
CAI-Frankfurt
CAI-London/Heathrow

Seasonal routes (besides the one above):

In Summer
CAI-New York

In Winter
Sharm El Sheikh-Milan
Sharm El Sheikh-Munich
Sharm El Sheikk-Jeddah
Luxor-London/Heathrow
and other destinations from SharmElsheikh, Hurghada and Luxor during the peak winter holiday season

Maybe they could buy them with the roughly $3 BILLION in aid the US Government gives them each year? Pathetic!

The CAI-JFK-YUL is a good possibilty, during the summer Egyptair operate daily flights, using 777/747. Slot restraints at JFK make it difficult to increase frequency.

Loadfactors are very high on this route as the airline is the only one operating the route. Numbers dropped after 9/11 but are growing again, with many Americans holidaying in Egypt. There is also a large Egyptian population in New York and Montreal.

What is the source of the above?

Given recent fleet rationalisation plans, I doubt it will happen.

Cedarjet's comment about the LHR route is so true.Crew rostering must be a bitch for them.

There is no way MS can profitably fill up a 380 to LHR.I very much doubt that JFK-YUL could sustain one either. If such an order did occur it would be political in nature even then that would be odd.

I am not how reliable the source is, but it was published along with their fleet rationlisation plan on this website.

I think it is a viable option, as Egyptair currently operate B747, which operate in a high density seating- 460 seats-(18F, 47C, 395), which are mainly operated on its Middle Eastern destinations and from Luxor, Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh to Europe in the winter.

The reason they are removing the B747-300s is due to them being old airframes. Their website sugests they intend to operate larger aircraft in the future..which type..it doesnt say.

Look the LHR is a profitable route for Egyptair as well as British Airways. As I mentioned before Egyptair operate the B777 on five of its 7 flights and the A300-600R on the other two. The airline also wants to increase it fequency at Heathrow but it is difficult to get the required slots. The 747 is used on the Luxor flights and the A320/321 on the Sharm El Sheikh flights.

This means both airlines operate large, widebody aircrafts, so I'm sure they can fill operate the A380 profitablily into LHR.

So where could they use it to? Saudi already mentioned, during Hadjj season it´s surely needed and they probably could needed. London perhaps to get better slots or Dubai? Otherwise I can´t see a need for this plane for Egyptair.
Phxinterrupted, the A380 contain many parts made in the USofA, so even
if Egypt would consider this, USofA gain something if the bought a few A380
(especially with GE engines). But the Boeing only policy, does only apply for
Israel not Egypt.

There are certainly a few routes they can be used on, and I am sure that by the time they are delivered by the end of the decade passenger growth will be significant enough to operate these aircraft. Its planning for future demands rather than just what today's market can sustain.

EA777, you mentioned that the A 380 could be used for MS on the CAI-FRA-CAI route, I dissagree with that. Currently is MS flying CAI-FRA-CAI daily except Wednesday with a mix of A 300's, A 321's and A 320's. The most passengers between FRA and CAI are flying on LH because they have a huge feeder network to/from FRA which MS doesn't have to/from CAI, and LH also serves several routes in the Middle East nonstop from FRA, so CAI is not a very attractive hub for passengers who are travelling from FRA to the Middle East. In my opinion, an A 380 would not make sense here, even when MS is cutting the frequency to FRA, it would be even worse when they would cut it in favor of a bigger aircraft because their schedule would become more inflexible.

Probably Frankfurt wasn't the best example but there are many other viable routes that could have the A380 operate on them profitably. LHR is definently one route where they could be deployed on year-round.

Although LHR is scheduled to be 5 772s a week and 2 A300s it's very often not that! We've had 321s on the CAI route before which NO 380 should ever have.
