F9's New Cities - Where?

Thu Nov 27, 2003 2:48 am

Here's a good game for the holiday weekend. F9 plans to expand to new cities - and possibly a Caribbean island - but which ones?

http://www.rockymountainnews.com/drmn/business/article/0,1299,DRMN_4_2457801,00.html

In addition to those discussed, there's also been a lot of talk about Canada.
I would think San Antonio is a natural and he city of Fresno has a grant if F9 flies there.

The Caribbean? My guess would be Jamaica.

A safe and happy Thanksgiving to all.

cheers

I would think that they would look at Detroit, San Antonio, Charlotte, Raleigh & Cleveland as possible additions, but not neccessarily all of them.
Additionally I think they will look at JetConnect service for Bozeman, Billings,
Spokane & Sioux Falls, and possibly Calgary Edmonton & Winnpeg

Would be interesting to see Memphis get some F9 service, at least Jetconnect...

In the east I think they are also looking at Hartford, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Rochester, Providence and Raleigh.

I could see them going into Caribbean as they like community support and hoteliers down there help out sometimes. Perhaps somewhere in Dominican Republic.

I don't think they would go into DTW...more or less go into either FNT or GRR. I think this because DTW already has 3 established carriers on this route (1 bein a LCC). They are kinda weak in the midwest here where they used to be really strong. I would think GRR or FNT would be the best choices for the Michigan area because it allows them to compete with those established carriers indirectly. They definitely have something going for them...I can't wait to see them come to somewhere close to my area!

Unfortunately, the new Caribbean service would most likely be nonstop from Denver.  Sad

Good for people in DEN (funny, they already have adequte charter service to exotic destinations) and the west, but not so good for cities like FLL,MSY,TPA,MCO, all of which would make perfect stop over destinations for Caribbean service.

In the U.S, I'd look for cities like RDU,PHL,BOS or PVD,BNA,CMH, etc.

In Canada, YYZ,YUL,YVR,YEG, and YYC all come to mind.

MSYtristar:

Of course, you're right. For now, I'd guess that it will all begin and end at DEN.

F9 appears to be "testing the water" with it's expansion into something slightly different from the other LCC's.

With the exception of HP (which is a "convert" LCC), not many of the others are expanding much internationally.

BUT - by the end of this winter, they will start to have some idea of how much support the Mexican destinations get from, say, SMF or RNO or SLC. This could affect decisions on adding service from any of those or other cities, as non-stops.

Eventually, I'd be sure that they will add service to other cities that doesn't originate in DEN. If only because, at the present rate of growth, they're going to run out of gates at DIA within a couple of years. Again.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Also, at the moment, they're all leisure destinations. I'd like to see them add a "business" city, such as Monterrey, Mexico.

cheers

I know for a fact they were already looking at PBI for a February start up. F9 already serves FLL, don't they? PVD would definitely be a good new city for them. There's currently no nonstop service in the PVD-DEN market, same goes for PBI.

I don't think F9 gets much support from SLC for their Mexican Service. Aeromexico started service in SLC sometime ago, because the Morris-Murdock Group who organizes Mexican Trips guaranteed them the traffic.

My hope is BOS, PVD, Hartford or MHT.

As mentioned in a previous topic, F9 is definitely looking to Canada and
the North. YVR and ANC will most certainly be announced in time for
either the Spring or Summer schedule/2004. Jamaica/MBJ is also a very
strong probability with SJU also ranking high up there.
They arent setting up their aircraft for overwater status simply to cut the
flying time to FLL and CUN.

I understand that discussions between Frontier and Fresno are still going on but nothing firm yet for next year.

FAT does have the $1 million grant for a subsidy but I have to wonder if F9 might be a little leary of relying on a guarantee program after seeing ICT not develop. Different markets and I think Fresno will perform much better than ICT but F9 might be taking a very close look to be sure.

RDU seems to be near definite from what I've been hearing. Talked to one of the F9 captains who said it was coming soon, though only one flight a day to DEN. F9 TV ads have also been appearing here as of recent. Guess they have found gate space here somewhere.

It's kind of weird that they've overlooked San Antonio for so long. It is certainly one of the largest airports/metro areas west of the Mighty Mississippi that has not received Frontier service.

Per a Rocky Mountain newspaper article about United/Denver last spring...San Antonio was in the top four or five of United's Denver routes based on yield. Certainly that's due to United's total control of the SAT-DEN nonstop market.

SunValley:

I think they'd get at least some traffic from SLC to the Mexican resorts.

I just tried booking SLC/CUN on the AeroMexico website, but it kept telling me it was "invalid".

The website didn't even offer Los Cabos as a destination from SLC, and the Delta website wouldn't offer flights.

Also, a lot of F9's Mexican business is through the big vacation packagers, and I would think they'd get traffic from SLC.

Yes? No?

cheers

I'm hoping that they will choose PVD as thier New England city. F9's BOS experiance was much less than pleasant and I heard they have visited PVD in the past. I'm sure we're at least on the radar screen (so to say)!

What ever happened with the rumors of a hub in the East? Were those talks just nothing more than a bargaining chip with the DIA officials?

Srbmod:

F9 never said the "second hub" would be in the East - a lot of posters on the various boards were talking about a Western expansion.

Several airports came a'courting F9 offering themselves as the new hub. In particular, PIT and STL, who went to the press with the idea.

Now that the DIA gates are sorted out - for now - the idea of a second hub anywhere has taken a considerable back seat.

But - as I said above - F9's expansion plans mean that within two or three years, they'll be starting to crunch the gates again.

So "F9's second hub" may fall into the same category as the NWA/DC9 replacement debate. Something that will be proposed over and over.

cheers

SunValley- I was thinking the same thing about JetConnect to BIL. Maybe a 2x CRJ/1x A318 could work, or maybe 3x CR7

I can almost certainly say it wont be CLE. There already isn't a market b/t the two cities with COEX starting to fly the routes b/c our 735's arent even filling up.. UAL only has two flts as well.

F9 will not have the CRJ option for them,as YV will thankfully be gone at end of '03. And, it is Jet Express, Jet Connect is FL.
Ever since YV took over the DEN-BOI for F9 in Oct, their on time has gone to crap, mainly due to mx delays. You should hear what the contract ground crews here for them,as well as F9 csas and mgr have said about YV crap service. I hear they want the '37s back in a major way! It will be nice to see QX CR7s take it over Jan 1,as well as 1 A319 on AM run. Then just 2 CR7s in Spring.
And isn't DEN-CUN a touch further than DEN-FLL?

DEN-ELP with 2 daily CR7's starts soon...replaces the current 1-stop service via ABQ...another good option for RLP folks going east or west.

UAL snatching Mesa away from Frontier was the greatest gift that UAL could possibly have given Frontier.

JetExpress will begin serving ELP on Jan. 31, MSP and AUS on Feb. 8 and PDX on March 2. So not new cities, just JetExpress instead of, or in addition to, mainline.
