Thu Nov 27, 2003 4:26 am

I thought that it was the Kennedy Space center runway at like 15,000 feet.

Well, I entered "longest paved runway in the world" in the Yahoo! search engine, and came up with two possibilities, according to the articles' authors. The first is the mysterious Area 51 in Nevada, where it's stated the paved runway is five miles long. The second is a 16,076' runway in Uppington, South Africa.

Giving these a run for their money is the new 16,000' runway (16R/34L) at DEN, opened earlier this year.

I did not think Edwards was paved, I thought it was hard desert surface with lines painted on it. See this shot

I read on a newspaper when the Shuttle Columbia exploded that the longest runway of the world (its probably paved) was a runway on Eastern Island (Chile) made for the Space Shuttle in case of an emmergency landing.

I could never verify this information. Is that true? And anybody has pictures?

Upington, South Africa (UTN/FAUP): Runway 17/35 = 16076ft

... but, then again, as EDDL has mentioned, Ulyanovsk's runway is longer...

But, as mentioned above, the runway at Groom Lake is some 5 miles long, 27000 feet to be exact. All paved.

No its not, its the M25 (at any time of the day or night).

The runway at Upington was built that long to allow nonstop flights to Europe round the bulge of Africa, during the sanctions era. Then somebody spotted Ilha do Sal and paid somebody huge bucks to build an airport there, so Upington I don't think ever saw nonstop service to Europe. Its a tiny little airport (apart from the runway), I flew in on a 737 and we flew 2/3rds of the way along the runway before landing, and taxied for AGES to the tiny pondok terminal.

Hi JGPH1A,

I actually flew in and out of UTN on Dash 8s... that was kinda fun: it seemed like the flight from KIM to UTN took about as long as the taxiing to that little shack AKA the terminal... was a nice flight as well - by pure coincidence I caught the maiden pax flight of Dash 8-300 ZS-NMA...

Regards,
Frank

Hi Frank,

Dash-8's were after my time - when I went, SA still flew 737-200 from CPT and JNB to UTN daily (it was never full, but the 737 was the smallest plane we had !). Seems to me that since SAX took over, many of the smaller spots don't get as much service as they used to (although some eg Plet now have flights direct to JNB where before there was nothing).

When you went, was the baggage claim still just a tilted shelf that the ground handling guy (there was only one) tipped your bag onto ? Its a cute place though, I had a really nice stay there.

I thought it would be the Kennedy space center runway? Not sure of exact length but it's very very long. Space shuttle lands at like 300MPH then rolls out on the runway for about 45 secs-1 minute.

JGPH1A, I actually had a 732 listed in my booking until about a week before the flight (scheduled as JNB-KIM-UTN, then changed to JNB-BFN-UTN), so I was quite lucky with that one...

I think, although I'd have to take a look at the pictures that I took, that the baggage claim consisted of the same one guy putting your bags onto a wooden table in the "terminal" - maybe the shelf was broken...  Big grin ... although the shelf somehow does sound familiar... I'll have to ask the persons I was travelling with... great, I'm just 31 and already I cannot really remember something I saw 9 years ago - sometimes I really feel old..  Big grin

I was always just "in-and-out" of Upington, once on my way to Augrabies and then, about two years later, coming from Namibia - but it looked kinda cute... although I'm not sure if I'd want to live there (no offense, if anyone from Upington is reading this - but I tend to prefer towns that are a bit larger).

A short time after my second visit, they changed the service to J41s (they've got ERJs flying the route 6 days a week now, with a J41 on Saturday) and, for a short time I think they also had a connection from UTN to DUR, but they've cut that again.

At least in that DH8 the runway seemed very wide as well - it looked as if it could take off or land flying at a 90 degree angle of the actual runway heading...

Years ago I was told by a ferry pilot who frequently worked OAK-SYD that Hickam AFB/HNL International had the longest runway as the fence between them could be dropped giving a 20,000 foot runway when needed. I have no idea if this is true!

The Space Shuttle runway at the KSC is only 15000 feet long...but it is a staggering 300 feet wide...surely must be amongst the widest runway out there...

I think Vandenberg AFB CA is the longest in the U.S. Vandy was supposed to be a shuttle launch site prior to the Challenger disaster and remains an alternate landing site.

And some never listen, or read. A 15 or 16 thousand foot runway is long in commercial service, just add 11000 feet (another runway) and Groom Lake is the longest paved runway known to man today.

ENOUGH ! ! !

OK, most can't hop on a Janet and go measure the runway at Groom Lake themselves, but Dave Bethke of the Houston area has written a neat little webpage on the subject. Here's a quote...

"A place that's shrouded with secrecy tends to breed rumors and legends, often leading to wild exaggerations. While some are nearly impossible to track down, others, like the length of the runways, are fairly easy to document and measure. "

And here's the site on the subject of Groom Lake's runway.....

http://home.houston.rr.com/bethland/runway.html

Enjoy, and does anyone have any pictures of any of the runways longer than Denver's 16,000'er?

"Space shuttle lands at like 300MPH then rolls out on the runway for about 45 secs-1 minute."

It lands @ 215mph, fastest official landing speed, 300mph would kill the tires.

If only Miramar converted, then SAN would gain 6000feet!  Big grin

I think LAX has a 12600 adn JFK has 14700, I did not know that Groom Lake was paved; how did nobody see ALL the cement trucks going out there when it was built?

I only visited UTN once, for a couple of days (I went to Augrabies too - that's an amazing drive, miles and miles of empty) - I don't think I could live there though, it is what in SA would be called doer en gone (meaning the ar$e end of nowhere !).

I remember hearing a rumour once that Upington was one of the alternate landing sites for the Space Shuttle - it would be nice to think that could be true (after all its such a complete waste otherwise). Can anyone confirm/deny ?

Regarding Groom Lake, here are some satellite pictures taken by the Ikonos Satellite - a really great bird!
