The fastest subsonic jetliner is the Convair 990. However, the DC-8 was the first supersonic commercial jetliner when it reached mach 1.012 on a dive over California on a test flight in the early 60s.

The four engined airline that flew with five engine was a testbed Boeing 707 for an engine manufacturer (I forget which) with a fifth engine mounted on a horizontal strut off the right hand side of the nose.
(If this isn't the answer you wanted, its still an answer!)

E-3 is a Boeing 707 with a radome on the top.
E-4 is a twin turboprop engine carrier-based radome-equipped airliner.
E-6 is a 767 for the Japanese Air Force used in the same way as the E-3 for the USAF. (not always equipped with a radome)

The length of the A318 will be..... even shorter than the A319??????

1. Convair 990 (out-of-production). Boeing B747-400 (in-production).
2. The Dash-80 once flew with a fifth engine on the rear of the fuselage as a trial for the B727 engine arrangement. The B747 has also flown with 4 JT9Ds and 1 CFM56. I also suspect that a B707 has flown as a testbed with a fifth engine for PW.
3. E-3 = B707 AWACS; E-4 = B747-200 Advanced Airborne Command Post; E-6 = B707-320 TACAMO.
4. Too damned short. 31.4m.

Yes the E-4 is in service with the USAF, but is known as the Advanced Airborne Command Post. This is fancy slang for "the President rides this baby when he needs to go somewhere or a war starts".

I only know the first one, A319
life wasn't worth the balance, or the crumpled paper it was written on
