How Much Does A Pilot Make?

Sun Jan 09, 2000 8:45 pm

I'm wondering how much a pilot make. Second chair to captain. Different airlines... I want to become a pilot so, it's nice to know.

Thank you

When the Air Canada pilots went on strike last year, there was a wage comparisson between AC and UA for senior 747 pilots. It said that the ones at Ua make about $250000 (usd) a year. That's what keeps me goin on the same track as you. That number could be wrong by now though. Anyone have more info?

Depends on Aircraft Type and, most importantly, what country you fly in. Over here in the UK and Europe we get more than US pilots (often substantially more) for comparable positions.

I've talked with many pilots about the same issue. Since I hang out at the airport a lot, I've gotten some answers...

One MD-80 co-pilot for American makes $85,000, and a captain makes over $100,000.

One 777-200 captain for United makes over $200,000 and one 747-400 captain makes over $250,000.

Flight attendants, on the other hand...

Delta 767-400ER Pilots make around $225,000-$250,000 and the Delta 777-200 Pilots make around $298,000.

I think it is sad that pilots are paid that much to fly a plane that is so computerized. Personally dc-9, 737-100,200,and all other old plane pilots should be paid more than pilots who sit there and tell a computer what to do.

Phil330: You also have to keep in mind that the USD is worth a lot more than european money, even the brit pound. Even though the brit pound is worth more in the stock market, in reality i think the USD is worth more than any other money in the world.

Buyaboeingnow: Pilots get paid so much because they're responsible for the lives of sometimes up to 500 people. If you go to www.alpa.org there's a good explanation why pilots get paid so much.

Point taken, but I belive there is still some gap there which is not justified by those factors.

I understand also having visited the US and Canada quite a bit that the general cost of living in those countries is less than over here (like house prices and car prices, etc..)

This could account for the differences as well. I've also noticed that US pilot payscales differ from aircraft variants like MD-80 and MD-88 or 737-400 and 737-500? I found this quite odd, especially considering over here the "type pay" is diversifying. Our A320/321 pilots get the same, although as far as I can tell this would not be the case in the USA? First Officers who fly for Virgin Atlantic flying the A340 get paid the same as the Virgin Sun A320 First Officers, most US pilots find this incredible!

Anyway enough blabbering!

Thank You For All Of Your Answears, So Far...

Thank you! If a pilot can make up to 250 000 US $...wow. That a lot of money in Norway. To make such money in Norway you have to be a leader in a big company.

Cost Of Living

Mon Jan 10, 2000 8:04 am

So is it true that it is more expensive to live in other countries? Like Britian....or how about Australia? Would $250,000 get you less buying power over there than in the U.S. or more?

You've got it wrong a pilot does not always put things in a computer he does alot more. Such as pre & post Flight checks, and some pilots don't always fly on autopilot. Like me when i'm a pilot I don't always won't to use autopilot b/c i will take the job for my love of flying

thanks

Something Not Mentioned...

How much does a doctor make? Why do they make so much? Because they went to college for 7 years?

Most commercial pilots are college graduates. In addition, most spend a good number of years flying Part 135 and flying for the minors before they move on to flying for the majors and start making the kind of money that is being discussed here.

In conclusion, pilots spend at least as many years getting their education and over the span of their career have had the hands of far more people in their hands than doctors.

They are worth every penney, pound, franc, etc. they are paid.

Pilot Pay/flying 727

Pilots really do not make that much money. I new guy at Virgin Atlantic makes less then a dime per seat per hour! And an Amercian Eagle makes slightly less then a quarter!

Nice idea but the capt. will not allow you as airlines require auto pilot to be on! Also flying at 32,000 and as many hours as you have you will be more then happy to put on that autopilot.

RE: Cost Of Living

Hi There

It can be quite expensive here in Australia

for example, a nice house in a good area will cost around $250,000, weekly shopping bill for a family of 5 is about $180, petrol for the car is about 81cpl at the moment (geeze that sucks, it used to be 64cpl!!!)

P.S. These costs are for Perth, its more expensive in Sydney, not sure how much more though

Regards

The airline I fly for pays the same to all Captains, regardless of aircraft types. Equally, all F/O's get the same salary. Basic salary is not very high compared to other airlines, but there are good benefits/bonuses, including living in a tax free area.

Why do pilots get paid so much?

Well a brain surgeon can only kill one person, we can kill thousands if we get something wrong. And if they die, it's our fault!

Just to emphasise, however, most pilots self-fund their training in some form or another, often to very high sums, and then spend a number of years working for smaller regional carriers earning smaller amounts before progressing onto the salaries we are discussing here.

I was lucky to only spend a year in a "regional" before going onto the 757, and even then the starting pay was not what it is today. These days here in the UK it is not unusual to go straight onto a jet (757/A320 or similar) after training.

Well this one is from the horses mouth but a Delta Air lines 777-200 International captain makes a base of $265/hour, not including per diem. And I think it's computed as 75 hours per month up to 80 for some months depending on availability.

Of course I'm not a 777-200 captain (more like a 737 FO!) but the Jan 1, 2000 payrates were delivered hot off the presses.

I think that airliner-pilots in general are worth every dime they get paid. So many thousand miles flown every hour every day around the globe so safe, we are lucky they do their job so well again and again.
