Gate Agents, Ur Technical Responsibilities

Hey gate agents... I was just wondering what types of technical responsibilities you guys have to deal with when dispatching flights... what all kinds of paper work, documents...etc do you deal with, who all do you have to talk to get ur flight out on time? The actual flight dispatcher? As far as cargo loads and that aspect, what all do you have to do????? If some of you would be willing to give me a detailed perspective of the whole process that would absolutely be awesome!!! Thanks!

Well, due to the climate of today -post 9/11 we can't share all of our secrets.
However, it is a balancing act. One has to be friendly and professional but, very into clock management. It is the little things that can delay a flight. Thank God for computers and the Internet. Things are much easier. And, to those passengers who claim we do not keep them updated on delays; We generally pass along what we receive. Experience has taught us, that peeing in your ear and telling you it is raining is counterproductive. It is just the facts ladies and gentlemen.
We keep in constant contact with operations, the ramp and the ticket counter. There is a reason why there are rules such as thirty minute flight check in times. I love my job. Yes, at times there is high drama and a lot of times high comedy. How about a whole concourse being shut down for almost a half hour because someone's pet got loose and decided to tour the airport! (LOL). The TV networks and Hollywood have a gold mine of material to produce some dramatic and comedic TV classics. If I went off topic sorry but, I hope this gives you some insight.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Thanks, but Im really looking for an indepth imformative type of perspective about what gate agents do as I am constantly wondering... maybe some other's could shed some light on this! thanks once again!

Part of what he was saying, is that due to the whole 9/11 thing we have to keep some of what was done on the downlow. But with my company, the agents do not speak with the dispatcher, they simply print it. We do a passenger load break down for the captain, and the ramp does a bag break down for the captain, to assist them in the weight and balance of the aircraft....

There are as many procedures as there are airlines .... Some airlines do their weight and balance centrally, some have the gate agents do them and others have the pilots do it.

Well nothing I do is "security sensitive"...lol. As a gate agent with HP, we don't have much paperwork, just printing passenger lists for the flight attendants and standby list, etc for the ramp. Our ramp operations agent does everything else. Now that we have all Mesa flights in TUS, our ramp agents don't have to do much of anything anymore except for fuel paperwork. Mesa pilots do all their own weight and balance. With mainline HP, our ops agent does it. I guess it depends on the airline...if agents are cross utilized (or cross brutalized as we used to call it) they may have to board the plane AND do other technical things.

Yah... can't think of too many things that we do that are security sensitive. As gate agents we don't deal with anything to do with cargo or baggage, other than telling OPS how many gate deliveries we have. We deal purely with people, and lots of paperwork. The paperwork we deal with on a domestic flight is just the flight plans/weather for the pilots, and manifests for the flight attendants. For international flights there is a few more things, customs documents really. Other than that, we just board the plane, check photo I.D, etc. Getting the plane out ontime is purely on us and the flight crew, dispatch doesn't get involved in that. We co-ordinate with the flight attendants when they will come up for pre-boards, and then we board people as fast as we can! I hope this answers your question?
