QF 744ERs MEL-LAX: Quick Ques

Sun Nov 30, 2003 4:02 pm

Just a quick question; am flying to SFO rtn in Jan for a conference via LAX on QF 93/94. Can someone confirm whether this route is flown exclusively by the new 744ERs now?
Also to LHR in FEB: And what about Qantas's MEL-SIN (QF 9/10) and SIN-LHR (QF9/10/31/32) runs-does anyone know if the 744ERs are ever used on these long haul routes as well?

The QF 93/94 is just about exclusivly ER's now. Can't remember the last time i saw a non ER model doing the route. As for the LHR routes, the ER's are sometimes used on these but am not sure how often this occurs. I would count on getting a standard VH-OJ* series aircraft.

Cheers

The 744ER's were delivered in Pacific config, so unlikely to get them on a LHR run.

You'll be impressed with the 744ER's on the MEL-LAX flights. A huge improvement over the already good 744's.

Yeah, thanks PER744. Been on them once already on a LAX-MEL when OEB was only 1 week old! Love those bathrooms and 777 interiors.
I hope the 747 has a long way to go before they stop making them.

I don't think you mean OEB QFClub. This is not a 744ER. I think this was bought 2nd hand from Asiana.

VH-OEB is a 744-ER, and the first of the LRs delivered to QF. Look it up.

Actually, Qantaspower-you're RIGHT. Sorry, my mistake. OEB is a reconfigured 744 (ex MH). It must have been OED then; as the captain did say it was the first of the 744ERs to be delivered to QF. I assumed it was OEB. You're on the ball!!
Will add you to my RU list.

cheers,

VH-OEB is not an -ER model!! The six ER's delivered to QF are -OEE, -OEF, -OEG, OEH, -OEI and -OEJ. VH-OEB is a 747-48E, with CF6-80C2B1F engines (all -ERS have GE's). VH-OED is not an -ER either. -OED is a 747-4H6 that came from Malaysian Airlines

Cheers

Must have been OEE then.
What happened to OED then, Melbflyer?

OEB,OEC and OED are all second hand 744s from MAS and Asiana.

OEE-OEJ are the 6 744ERs

The reason they all share a common rego is because all 9 are GE powered.

All RR powered 744s have OJ* regos

What type of GE engines are on Qantas 744ERs? Thanks.

I had the pleasure of travelling of VH-OEG and VH-OEF, both of which are 744ER's. When it comes to the difference between the cabins, i didnt notice anything different when i was in VH-OJR, it seemed the same. Only i guess the lavatories seemed cleaner.

In August I flew MEL-LAX on OEI, which was only 3 weeks old at the time, whilst I was away OEJ (the new Wunala) was delivered, and I ended up on it for LAX-SYD a few weeks later. They both still had the 'new plane smell'  Big grin

The cabins are hugely different from the old 744's. Even the cabin crew who hadn't gone through the 744ER familiarisation course found the cabin to be different. (Job boxes located in different areas, etc)

Yes, MrBA. If yougoto the Qantas website at www.qantas.com.au, go to the interactive travel classes menu and click on economy class-all those pics are from the new 744ER. You can have 360s of the cabin.
cheers

The 744ER is strictly based on the Australia - USA routes. Very rarely are they pulled off US routes & onto Kangaroo routes,Trans Tasman or Asian destinations, BUT, I know -OEJ was placed on the QF127 Sydney - Hong Kong route back in Oct or Nov & havent seen it placed on any other international route since. It would be a waste to have these aircraft used for anything else than US routes considering they have extra range & payload.

The biggest waste of the -ER's was a couple of weeks ago during the Rugby World Cup fianl week. -OEH taken out of service to have the 'Go Wallabies' title painted on the belly, then flying SYD-MEL-SYD services for two days before it was meant to do a flyover of the final. Of course as many know this never occured due to poor weather so a bit of a waste really. Sh*t happens i suppose. It did operate the Antartic flight on the monday though so i suppose this flight was a worthy candidate for an -ER.

Cheers
