Status On Orient Thai Airlines

Mon Dec 01, 2003 2:26 am

Orient Thai Airlines, a ,to me, confusing airline. So i hope anybody here have some info about their current operations and future plans.

Firts we have their new low cost carrier "One Two Go", which is to begin flights 200 seat 757-200s between Bangkok and Chiang Mai on Friday Descember 5. Do you think this airline will "take off on schedule" next Friday, or not? Have they aquired the 757 yet?

Another confusing topic is the long rumored US flights that was due to begin basck in October (Airliner World November 2003). Is that something that will happen, or just a too big idea for an airline that are growing?

Even though i both hope and think Orient Thai is a airline that will survive and gradualy expand from the smal aitline it was some years ago to a bigger player in Thai aviation, I do sometimes find it hard to decside wether to take this airline serious or not. Its probably because so many airlines before them have had the plans, but not managed to start long international flights.

The last thing is if sombody knows their current fleet? Jetliners Database is to litle help since they shows the airline with one stored 742 and one flying 741.

What i have found out is:

741/742: Hs-UTB ; UTC ; UTD ; UTH ; UTP
L1011: ?
B757 : ?

I worked Northwest flight #27 from Narita to Bangkok on November 27th and when we arrived at 23:00 there was an Orient Thai L-1011 on the ramp. There was activity around the TriStar, so I assume it had recently flown in from somewhere.

Orient thai currently has two L1011 tristars in operation. HS-UTE and HS-UTA.

From mid December two of the B747's are going to fly the Hajj for PIA. Orient Thai B747's are old but still better than the old Russian planes PIA used to lease for the Hajj a few years back.

I wonder who provides the MX for their old planes.

There is an ex-ATA B757 painted in One Two Go / Orient Thai livery in the desert ready for delivery IIRC.

4 of its 747s are from JAL, one from United. All are around 30 years old, even the youngest is past its 25th birthday, that means 10 years older than the oldest 747 in Thai Internationals fleet!
All of Orient Thais aircraft have more or less different liveries.

Saw a couple of them (742's, I assume) on the tarmac at HKG the other day. One of my colleagues referred to the planes as 'fake Speedbirds'. I must admit, I did get caught out on a couple of occasions.

Don't mind me, carry on.

http://www.orient-thai.com

apparently the first one-two-go (dodgy name, especially when the one-two-... brand name is associated in Thailand with the provider of pre paid mobile phone network) flight is December 3rd to CNX. The mainstream airline (Orient Thai) itself looks even dodgier than other low-cost carriers, one could only wait and see how its low cost subsidiary performs.

The One-Two-Go 757 is HS-OTA and is now in Bangkok, first flight is this friday for VIP's. I have a friend thats been given a seat if he wants to go.

The same friend thats now in Bangkok says he saw 4 L1011's with OX markings. Can this be confirmed?

As for the 747's, they have:

HS-UTB 747-246B ex Air Atlanta
HS-UTC 747-238B ex United
HS-UTD 747-146 ex JAL
HS-UTH 747-146 ex JAL
HS-UTP 747-246B ex JAL
Bush, your a sad, sad man.

Orient Thai currently has five B747s - HS-UTB, HS-UTC, HS-UTD, HS-UTH and HS-UTP. These are painted in various interpretation of the same livery, and -UTC is still in the basic colours of United Airlines.

There are two TriStars - HS-UTA and HS-UTE (which operated a Finnair's flight AY97 BKK-SIN-BKK on 22 Nov 2003!!!). Another TriStar XU-100 is in the colours of Kampuchea Airlines.

HS-OTA (ex-ATA machine) has been delivered and can be viewed at:

It does seem like One-Two-GO is going to fly as scheduled on 5 Dec 2003 (the 76th Birthday of King Bhumibol Chulalongkorn).

Meanwhile, XU-123 in MyTravel hybrid livery is back in BKK today (1Dec).
