764 Vs 777

Mon Dec 01, 2003 5:08 am

Alright, I think somebody that is knowledgable with Delta's operations could best answer this since they use both types.

What are the major differences in range, payload and operating costs between the 767-400 and the 777? I really don't see the point in using both types if they are similiar in these areas, which is why I'm asking.

They aren't similar in those areas. The MTOW difference is pretty big. The 777 can also carry WAY more cargo.

Also, DL 777s are for international ops so they have business elite. The 764s were specifically designed as L-1011 replacements for DL. They have domestic first class seating and are used for exactly what DL wanted them to be used for, high density flights within the US.

Back to the subject gentlemen,

DL's 764's, as stated, were a direct replacement for the L-1011...the seats in the back are packed, and the f/c is small as well....it has more seats than anything in Delta (save for the M11?), and the longest lines I ever see it doing are ATL-HNL, but really just alot of ATL-CO / KMCO), USA - Florida">MCO, ATL-LAX, high density runs. CO uses it's 764's internationally, one thing I wish DL would do!

DL's 777's are for the more long haul routes..but you'll see a few on the ATL-LAX, ATL-CO / KMCO), USA - Florida">MCO runs...business on those is rather nice  Smile Better revenues on that jet come internationally.

Both DL's 764ERs (highest) and 772ERs have more seating capacity than its M11s.

the longest lines I ever see it doing are ATL-HNL

Their CVG-HNL is nearly equal in length also.

Thanks DeltaGuy. I had pretty much figured it was a replacement for something they were retiring. But then I started reading threads about using it instead of the 777 on some routes. DL has a large 767 fleet. Despite the large differences in the two types I could see where on some routes using the 767 would be a cost savings. Most aircraft rarely fly at their designed capacities so in most cases the 767 could be suitable. Are they cross training crews in all variants? I know that the 767/757 family carries a common type rating but there are still subtle differences in systems and most airilines won't have pilots changing variations on a frequent basis for this reason.

The 764 pilot are in a different group than the 762/3 pilots at DL, i think they are separate from the 777 as well.

A little bit off topic but, what are the differences in the cockpit layouts between the two? Sorry if this has been asked before but it was on my mind when I came across this thread.

The 764ER has the 777's cockpit layout... though it can be programmed to display information as a 757/762/763 would.
