NWA/KLM Increase AMS-MSP & IAH?

Mon Dec 01, 2003 11:49 pm

It doesn't say anything about what they are going to do on the AMS-IAH route. What will service be like on this route this summer?

From the release, they will be increasing IAH to nine weekly flights, with second flights on Friday and Sunday with 767-300ERs. The schedule has not been released so times are not available, but I'd be interested to see when they time this flight as not to interfere with Continentals 764 flight later in the day. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a 5ish IAH arrival.

Either way, this means AMS-IAH has gone from seven weekly 74M to 16 weekly 763/764/74M in a matter of two years or so. Not too shabby.

I am hedging my bets on Air France adding additional frequencies in 2004. BA is already up to 17 weekly 777s.

OK, so IAH still has the Continental daily from IAH to AMS, along with KLM's daily 747. Then KLM is going to add a 767 on Friday and Sunday.

Do I have this right?

Do not forget that CO operates a daily flight between IAH and AMS with a 762 and sometimes the 772.These flight are also code-shared

I guess this is proof that the KL/NW and KL/CO code-share network is working better and better. MSP-AMS has been a very successful route, with major hubs at both origination and destination of the flights, and I guess that IAH-AMS is really taking off if extra capacity is needed. KL did just fine on the IAH-AMS route even before the link up with CO, and, now, with code-sharing, this route is linking CO's major hub with the KL network. CO has jumped around on the IAH-AMS route, introducing it with the 762, then quickly going to the 764 and then the 772 depending upon season (I think that CO swaps aircraft on one IAH-HNL flight and IAH-AMS depending upon season). I am surprised, however, that KL will use the 763 for the 2 extra weekly IAH-AMS flights, I guess that was all that was available due to scheduling.

CO is also upgrading its EWR-AMS flight to 772 equipment.

Its nice to hear good news and more service (for a change!).

Incorrect. None of the CO flights to AMS are codeshared. Neither KLM nor NWA put their flightnumber on any CO operated flight.

While the CO IAH-AMS flights are not code-shared, the second part of your statement is irrevocably false. From the NW timetable's first page:

NW6553 ACA-IAH
NW6146 BQN-EWR-CLE
NW6179 ABQ-IAH

There are hundreds more examples of this in the NW timetable, found at http://www.nwa.com/travel/timetable/effective_102603.pdf. Again, NW puts its flight numbers on a large number of CO flights. This would be the definition of code sharing.

Always happy to enlighten,

NWAman you're 100% correct (and how foolish of me to forget these flights). I should have said that this applies to any transatlantic flight (unless I missed something).

Whew! That just made my day! It'll be awesome to see KLM back at MSP! I've never took photos of KLM, I bet it'll be great! I've seen the 747-400, and -200(or was it -300) here a few times a long way back, and now it'll be great to see the MD-11, yet alone have MD-11 service to MSP!

I remember when KLM first started service to MSP back in 1993 with their MD-11. I was really hurt to see those big blue planes leave back in 2001. I'll certainly make it out there now to catch them flying in again.

MSP service will be from March 27th to October 29th.

Slightly off topic but I just saw the initial slot requests and the second IAH flight isn't listed (but the MSP is). However the flights are already loaded. The MSP flight should become KL667/8 and the extra IAH flight KL663/4

Schedule KL 663/4
Dep AMS at 14:30 arr IAH at 17:20
Dep IAH at 20:05 arr AMS at 12:50

Schedule KL667/8
Dep AMS at 14:05 arr MSP at 15:55
Dep MSP at 17:55 arr AMS at 09:20

(schedules subject to change)

BTW SFO will get the 777 (in addition to the MD-11) and there is a small possibility KLM will return to ATL with a MD-11.

Pardon me if this is off-topic. Any reason why NW charges more ($900) for a DEN-DTW-AMS than a DEN-DTW-LGW ($650) for next summer?

Thanks.

Hisham.

Very interesting. I assume that the oil business is a significant reason for KL's success into IAH. With success like this, I wouldn't be shocked to see a more extensive codeshare/partnership deal between KL and CO. That is A LOT of seats between those two cities.

Do not forget that CO operates a daily flight between IAH and AMS with a 762 and sometimes the 772.These flight are also code-shared

IAH-AMS is exclusively operated with 764 equipment.

Being the DFW homer that I am, I would love to see the connection numbers between DFW-AMS on NW/CO/KL flights. Although DFW does not have the oil presence that IAH does, the oil companies in Dallas are still relatively significant. That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if DFW did recieve a service to AMS by KLM (763, M11?) at some point in time, especially after the new international terminal is completed. With the new codeshares between DL/CO/NW, it may only enhance the possibility.

AMS-DTW-AMS is always very busy and next summer the capacity on the route is also lower thus it's just normal economics (high demand less capacity).

With KLM picking up an additional frequency on MSP-AMS, this likely means KLM will not be returning to DTW this summer, NW will operate all DTW-AMS service
