Varig/TAM Merger Off?

Wed Dec 03, 2003 7:37 am

I read today in Flight International that Varig and TAM may not merge after all as both have been reporting good loads and that they are actually making profit. If the trend continues they deal may be brushed aside.

The merger plans change every week it seems. I read a few weeks ago that the merger was as good as done, now it is off again. There are quite a few older forums on this topic.

I'm actually quite sure that the merger will go ahead - as Gte439u mentioned, the plan changes about once a week for the public, but I suspect that - behind closed doors - the merger is more or less on track.

After all, given the high level of cooperation on domestic routes that TAM and Varig already have, I'm sure that both are aware that their improved results benefit from exactly this cooperation: if they should go back to all-out competition, I'm sure that at least one - if not both - would suffer setbacks in their results.

Smile - it confuses people!

Even here in Brazil, is almost impossible to know the truth about this merger... Varig is getting better, the prejudice this year is 74% less than in 2002. Varig's fleet got smaller, and stopped some routes inside Brazil (just a few)... TAM's situation had always been better than Varig's, this year is the same...
But, the situation of both airlines just got better due to the merger that was about to happen. If it wasn't the merger, probably the situation wouldn't be this.
And everything is confused here. The airlines say something, the government say another, and nothing is confirmed. I hope that this merger get read, but I'm not sure about it...
This week was an article in "REVISTA VEJA", the most famous magazine in Brazil, about Varig's situation. The main point in the article, is that Varig's situation just got better due to the code-share.
