Mesaba Avro In Goodyear, AZ

Thu Dec 04, 2003 3:10 am

Apparantly one of our avros was ferried to Goodyear, AZ last night. This appears to be one of the planes slated to be parked. The interesting thing is that there are no storage facilities at Goodyear. But what is there, is a TIMCO Aviation facility. TIMCO is the company that Mesaba has stupidly contracted for all heavy maintenance. However, the heavy maintenance is being done at the Lake City, FL facility, not the one on Goodyear. There is however a paint shop in Goodyear.

Chew this one up and see what it tastes like. Coincidence? I think not.

The GYR facility does have heavy MX there as well as paint. http://www.timco.aero/company/facilities/goodyear.php
Just b/c lake city is supposed to do "scheduled" heavy MX don't mean that GYR can't do it too. Also on the TIMCO website, it says nothign bout contracting Line Maintenance with XJ for antyhing or that they are certified to work on Avros.
TIMCO supports Heavy Maintenance customers with Line Maintenance as part of our total maintenance support concept. Line Maintenance operations are established on a contract basis for Regular Heavy Maintenance Customers as part of yearly or multi year Scheduled Maintenance programs.

Currently, TIMCO is providing Line maintenance for 2 customers in 4 different cities:
Greensboro, NC; Mesa, AZ; Alexandria. LA.; and Oklahoma City, OK.
Just all smelly fishy to me. I wish XJ would tell NW to shove the Arvo up their @$$ and get Airubes and put them in MSP right up against NW

I thought NW's owned the aircraft and Mesaba was only leasing them?

no NW leases them then subleases to mesaba, they are consideringreturing them to the lessor, that is the whole talk of NW getting rid of them

How soon til we see one of the Arvo's in the new livery.......probably on about, oh say the 15th....

The decision has been made, I assume it was XJ crews who ferried in there, and I'm sure they have an idea what is going on. At least the GYR folks would have to.

Might I add a few things I just found out. The a/c in question, 527 was recently in Lake City, FL for a C check. It returned to the line briefly (I saw it in it peeling paint glory the other day in MSP) and now is in Goodyear. Why would it need to go to Goodyear if it just came out of mx in FL? Also - at the facility in FL there are Mesaba mechanics. There aren't any in AZ however.

NW owns 11 Avros and leases the other 25. They then in turn, sublease them to Mesaba. Mesaba, however, is responsible for all maintenance.Only heavy checks were farmed out to TIMCO. Line and overnight mx is still done by XJ mechanics in MSP, DTW, MEM, CVG and DSM.

This gets fishier by the moment... BTW, no specific wors from the pilots who ferried the plane to AZ. Just basic info.

Ooh I am salivating at the thought of a repainted ARJ. You can get nice and close to the planes up here at GFK and you can definitely see them in their peeling glory. If this is the case, I have my car ready for a trip to MSP or beyond. We're still pulling for you XJ pilots. Best of luck over the next few months.

Wow, This would be great news to see an ARJ in the new paint scheme. I would absolutely love it. We'll have to think of a cool name for them. 9E pilots call their silver CRJs the silver bullet. Hmmm, any good ideas? I still have my "Save the Avros" button on my IDs. All the crews, 9E crews, and the occasional NW pilot love them. Lets root for them. How else will we do ASE. I say we take all of those ARJs and send them to larger destinations and stick those CRJs and send those things to closer destinations.

AZJ, I hate to say this, but I believe there are aircraft storage facilities at GYR. I know FedEx was keeping a number of DC-10's there for MD-10 conversions. Also a quick google search came up with this....
http://www.visitingphx.com/gyrphotos.html

So knows......you probably know more than anyone, no wait, pilots are the last to know....

Found this out too:
Yesterday:
Mesaba 3690
Airport: Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN - GYR
Scheduled Time: Dep: 1:51 PM, Dec 02 Arr: 4:23 PM, Dec 02
Actual Time: Dep: 3:58 PM, Dec 02 Arr: 6:17 PM, Dec 02
Status: Landed
Equipment: RJ85

Today:
Mesaba 3690
Airport: Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN - GYR
Scheduled Time: Dep: 2:46 PM, Arr: Dec 03 5:23 PM, Dec 03
Actual Time: Dep: 3:05 PM, Dec 03 Arr: 5:17 PM, Dec 03
Status: Landed
Equipment: RJ85

That makes two out there......

OooooK, Then the 150 or so aircraft on site are for what? Oh yeah, GYR is a major storage field and has been for years. Since I was but a small tyke and before.

I bet you dollars to donuts that the 15th is the first of XJ's last days.

Dude, seriously I don't know. I wouldn't bet either way, cuz I'd probably lose. There are too many facts that say this thing could go either way. I'd be a little more optimistic. The 15th isn't XJ's last day, something will happen either way.

You know whats sad.......to tell you how no one trusts XJ's management in this case. Most times when an airline says they're parking an aircraft, thats simply what it means. Now for XJ, there are rampant conspiracy theories floating around everywhere. I'm sure upper management is playing the game too. This just shows how bad the lack of trust there is what the company is saying. At most normal companies, not every move is subject to second guessing an ulterior motives. Just shows how no one can believe anything that is coming from the top. If they are not telling the truth, then they should be hauled out to the street for "unethical conduct"

Well, I guess I stand corrected. I was basing the no storage facility info on some folks who had been out to GYR before. At any rate - there are a lot of things that don't add up. Like PSU, I think things could go either way. The next 2 weeks will be weeks full of info regarding XJ.

And as far as Airdude66's obsession... he's an XJ manager who cannot wait to blame the impending demise on the pilot group. Like the rest of the SLT.

Acid..

As a ramp agent, you obviously are not seeing the big picture. Just how long do you think XJ could survive as an all Saab fleet? This company is so top heavy, it is ridiculous and impossible for Saabs alone to support the current management style.

For those of you who have not seen the previous discussions on this subject, here is why you are seeing the birds at Goodyear:

"Mesaba and Northwest have also agreed to remove five of the RJ85 regional jets from service. Three of the RJ85 are expected to be removed from service during December 2003 and two in January 2004."

AZ

I do not desire to blame anyone because I believe both parties share the blame for reaching this impass. The pilots do seem to stand in the position of being guiltless through this though....it is that type of arrogance that I resent. I do know there are many fine XJ pilots who just want this to be over and come out of this with a job....too bad they are afraid to talk to their peers.

I guess there must be a lot of Eastern stike supporters who are just proud to stand in the unemployment line knowing they brought down an airline. They sure proved a point though even though it was Lorenzo that was wrong.

Here's some more info on the subject...

Through the grapevine at work....apparently 524, 525, and 529 were not stripped down when they were flown out to GYR. Apparently safety cards, magazines, galley carts, etc were all left onboard. Also, TIMCO employees were told that these aircraft were to remain there for 60 days.

Who knows....

Also, today is the 4th, weren't a round of negotiations set to close today....

Before Thanksgiving I was up in ATW for an interview......I met some XJ's pilots who were up there interviewing for AirWhisky up there. I guess they are to be going in training soon for XJ and attended a strike rally, thinking it was just a normal ALPA union meeting and were threated by union reps that if they attended training or anything during the strike they would have the tires on their car slashed. Talking to them, I wasn't too sure about how much they knew about the industry though. They were clueless about many common topics, there was a guy with they from ALG and the XJ guys had no idea that they are going down the crapper too, and had no idea about the whole ACA story. However, their claim was....yeah XJ is gonna go on strike, and keep the ARJ's, and get new jets in the future. Somehow I think they might be a little to optimistic and not understanding the big picture.

Also....

are 524, 525, and 527 owned or leased aircraft? I find it odd that they would park some of the newer ARJ's from late 1999 instead of the oldest ships.

Just flew a/c 502 today and it was heading to YUL for the overnight. We stitched to 501 aka Sparky back to CVG tonight. I would think if they would park planes it would be the broken ones not good ones that don't need repaired. just my 2cents.

What gives sending the 1999's to the desert? Why not the 1997's? Do these ones have more cycles on them? I just saw 7524 at MSP last week. I am still hoping NW will surprise us with silverbirds after the 60 days are up, or sooner.
