Which Is The Best Experience? 777-200 Or 747-200?

Mon Jan 10, 2000 11:42 am

I am planning on flying to LHR from BOS, should I go on the BA 747-200, or the BA 777-200? Never been on a 747 before.

747 for sure. It is a 200!!! There weren't that many produced. It is also getting old, probably soon to see the torch!. I would fly on it no matter what. The 777 is going to be around another 30 years. The old 747s will not. You will see what I mean, when you go.

I went on a TWA 747100, and it got phased out. Now I know I am lucky.

You will always be able to fly in the 777, it's brand new!

I know that I may just have to wait to find out, but what is the experience like on a 747-200? On the 777-200 it was really neat to see that huge wing sweeping up. It was really enormous. Also, when we took off, the whole plane shook under the power of the huge engines, it was really neat.

I took a trip recently from Dublin to Adelaide, which involved a connector to LHR, followed by a trip on MAS to KUL (B747-400) and then on to Adelaide (B777-200). Both flights were fabulous, but I have to say the B747 got my preference, what a magnificent piece of engineering!!!! That said, the B777 was also very impressive...

747-200! No doubt about that! I there were sheeps, cows, snakes, pigs and Celine Dion on my flight I would still fly on the 747! It´s a unique experience!
Being in a 747 is the most amazing experience I ever had and probably most of people in the forum agrees with me: there´s nothing like see the 747 taking off. On the first seconds, after taxiing, I felt the plane would crash, because the whole plane shook up!   The sound of the engines is really amazing!
I´ve been in a 747-300 (VARIG), from GRU to LAX and the trip was amazing! You feel so small inside the plane, man, it´s huge! I love the 747! I think this aircraft was the best and most sucessful production from Boeing.
Tell me something, how many opportunities will you have flying any 747? And the 777?
Also, airlines are gradually removing old aircrafts to put brand-new jets...
we´ll sure miss the 747 ;(((

If you've never been on a 747 before, then that should be your choice and, given that it's BA, try your luck with the cockpit. They're always quite decent and it's a good airline to fly with.

I agree, the 747 is a wonderful piece of engineering, but to be honest, the 777 is better, for the simple reason that's its newer. And don't worry; as new as the 777 is, the 747 will be around for decades to come. I expect the new models to be launched some time next year.

I understand what you say, Air Chick. Pity RG got rid of the 747s, but . . . your heart will go on!!! (Sorry, couldn't resist it!)
Anyway, Varig is supposed to be getting 777s sometime soon?

I´m sure I will miss their 747s, specially the 747-300 reg. PP-VO, my first and last trip with a 747.... ;(
Don´t even sing Celine Dion! For me... yikes!
I think the 777s are a rumour, but I´m not sure. I will get this clear straight with the source, the father of a friend of mine is a VARIG pilot. I´ll ask him.
I hope they can buy those beautiful triple 7s
BTW, a VARIG 737-300 just flew over my apartment. The weird thing is that there´s no livery, it´s plain white and just the VARIG logo painted on the tail.... really strange...

The 777 may be a more technically advanced plane, but, Kai Tak, tell me which gives the better feeling in the pit of your stomach when you hear the engines build up for T/O, mine's the 747 by a margin. It's just got a majesty that no airliner (to date) has matched....

The 747 isn't going anywhere folks so dry those eyes. The 747-200 is the second most popular 747 to date. Anyways the 747-400 and its new sisters that will be launched this year will be around for another 30 years. As for the 747-200 it is on its way out. I would definately try to get on the 747-200 flight. Get up to the cockpit and see what one "truly" looks like with steam gauges. My favorite 747 flight is not the BA 747-400 flights or VS 747-200 flight but the VS 747-100 flight. Nothing like sitting in an old workhorse and knowing heh she has done this plenty of times before so just sit back and relax.

P.S. Supposedly the RR powered 777-200IGWs are going to replace the 747-200s.

Go for the 747-200. It's a great airplane. I've been on LH and AC 747-200s. Lots of airlines are getting rid of their 747 classics, go for it before it's too late! It's such a nice feeling when the Jumbo Jet takes off. You can fly on the 777 tens of times in the next 30 years...

How About A 747-100?

Tue Jan 11, 2000 5:03 am

If you were to take VS across the pond BOS-LGW you would stand a 100% chance of getting a 747 "Classic". There is even a good possibility that you will get to fly on their 747-100 G-VMIA "Spirit of Sir Freddie". I have flown on that particular aircraft and it was the BEST flight I have ever had. She performed perfectly and got us into LGW from EWR 20 minutes early!!!!!!

747 (of Course)

Tue Jan 11, 2000 7:43 am

I suppose there isn't much point in saying this since it has already been said several times but, take the 747. It's bigger, it's badder (in a friendly way) and by god does it know how to fly!

Have just taken 4 flights on Emirates 777/200's and 300's. Its so nice to be on an aeroplane that gives a real feeling of comfort and power. The fully loaded take-off's were effortless - no rattles (unlike MD-11's which are not pleasant). Yes those 747's were nice, but given the choice I'm on a 777.

No rattles eh. Being totally honest here my flight on G-VMIA had no rattles also
