Kato Air Accident - Bodo

Thu Dec 04, 2003 6:19 pm

Understand a Kato Air Dornier 228 crash-landed at Bodo this morning.

Not many details, but all aboard apparently OK. Anyone know more?

4 people onboard, injured. At least two (copilot and one pax) seriously injured. Aircraft possibly hit by lightning during approach in bad weather, thunderstorm etc.

Just an observation, following the suggestion of a lightning strike - is that a burn-mark on the horizontal stabilizer?

That does look like a burn mark.

I hear that because of this lightning strike on the horizontal stabiliser, they lost elevator control and had to fly with the trim only.

There are some other photos out there which show it from a different angle, and you can definitely see bits missing from the right-hand side of the horizontal stabiliser. It's not clear if the actual linkage is broken.

That would explain the dramatic approach, dipping up and down. Not a pretty sight.  Sad

I am surprised the guy in the Right seat isn't dead.

Look at how much that cabin caved it.

During a crash sequence it probably flexed down a bit tighter then it finally ended up in that shot.

Take a look at the pictures on this page, which was posted in the national Norwegian newspaper VG. It clearly shows how the elevator was severely damaged.

I know it is in Norwegian, but the pictures speak for themselves.

Boy the overall shot from that angle in the above link makes the cabin look even more crushed then before!

Tg 747-300, I also serve my 9 months at Bodø. I saw the plane go down, and listend to the radio between emergency and rescue workers. Airport twr was shut down for as down for about 2-3 hours, partly because of the crash, but also because a lightning apparently hit the tower, disabeling the comunication with traffic.

Airport shut down for long periods today aswell due to heavy snow and slippery rwy. Aircrafts were earlierr today instructed to land on rwy 25 where the Do228 went down, but the threshhold was moved further in on the 3km long rwy. I heared ATC say at about 11AM that the wreckage had been moved from the rwy, and the planes could land as normal. I understand that the wreck has been put in a military hangar for further investigation.
