Western Airlines- who did they serve?

Fri Dec 05, 2003 5:34 am

I was surfing airliners.net and found a shot of a Western Airlines DC-10 in London.... I was not aware Western flew to Europe... what cities did they serve and from which US airports??

They served Denver from London for a short time. I believe they also served Los Angeles.

As DIA77 states, it served London N/S from Denver. I believe service started in 1978 and only lasted a few months. If memory serves me correctly, I believe WA also operated N/S London service from Anchorage--also lasting only a short period. Wish I still had my timetables from the 70s!

I had the year wrong, but I pulled this off of airchive.com:

"April 28, 1981
Western was on the move in the early 80s. In January 1981, it launched non-stop service from London Gatwick to Anchorage, Alaska, flying on to Honolulu. On April 28, 1981 this was joined by a non-stop London to Denver service using the airline’s “DC-10 SpaceShips”. The London service would be removed from the network less than 2 years later. Miami had been added in 1974, DFW and Washington D.C. were added in the early 80’s. By 1981 the proposed merger with Continental was definitely off."

As Picarus noted, Western served LGW non-stop from ANC and DEN. Neither route did well, and the Anchorage service was pulled in less than a year. LGW was the only European service Western served.

They had a hub here and were based here at one time!
