Delta L-1011 In HNL?

Fri Dec 05, 2003 5:42 am

I was flying through HNL 11/26 and, as we taxied out, noticed a L-1011 with half of "Delta" missing on the tail. Any ideas why this would be there? It was at a gate, I believe. I don't think I was just seeing things!

Thanks!

Maybe it is taking up service with another airline, though it seems strange that another airline would pull such a fuel-inefficient aircraft out of the desert unless the L-1011 was being converted into a freighter. It could be possible that the plane hasn't been repainted yet for another livery. Very interesting, TJ, and strange. Not that I don't believe you. It is highly unlikely that the aircraft is being operated by Delta, considering that Delta retired them over two years ago, as well replacing them with the much larger and much more fuel efficient 767-400ER. It is likely that L-1011 was taken out of the desert, and flew to Hawaii possibly using it as a refueling stop for its final destination. It may have been still wearing the Delta livery because it wouldn't have been repainted until it reached its final destination, where its new carrier would have repainted it in their livery. But again, this is no more than a theory, and an educated guess. AA's DC-10-10s have recently been removed from the desert to be converted into freighters with other airlines, and had international range because they were lighter than when loaded with passengers, and the same occurence could be true for Delta's L-1011s, which are just as old and were the greatest rivals of the DC-10s.

The 764 isn't larger than the L-1011.

I started a thread called "Seen @ HNL" search for it, and you'll get the answer you are looking for.
