Who Here Likes Dirty Planes?

Fri Dec 05, 2003 10:12 pm

Call it airliner kink if you will, but I LOVE a dirty plane. I can't really explain it, but there is something about seeing a big 747 with grease stained wings, rain trails down the side of the fuselage from the window seals, peeling paint, dirt trails caused by wind flowing down the side of the aircraft from places like the doors and cockpit window, and the "ring around the door" from the jetway touching the aircraft. It gives the aircraft the mystique of being flown to exotic places all over the world.

Lol.  Smile I like them too, I think it makes them look like true workhorses.
I also liked paint chipped airplanes.

Always like seeing aircraft return from Hadj flights, particularly those belonging to the European charter airlines with their temporary logo's peeling off and dirt on every exposed bit of paintwork! They certainly look like they've been working hard and desperate for a nice wash!

I don't know...there's nothing like sitting at the Tom Bradley Terminal at LAX and seeing a bunch of beautiful, clean 747s and 777s, and then see an Air France 777 in the middle of them, looking like somebody has rubbed dirt all over it. I know that Air France gets a bad rap in these forums, but in all honesty, most of their airplanes are just freaking disguisting on the outside. I'll take a shiny one over a dirty one.....

Geez, I guess there's a kink for every perv on this world. Just kidding of course.  Big thumbs up

I like 'em clean BTW. And yes, I know this statement can be interpeted in various ways. Big grin

Man, I thought the AF planes are the most dirty planes I´ve ever seen. But this KL F100 beats them all.  Wow!

BTW, I like AF although the planes mostly are very dirty.

Is dirt in the wings and control surfaces (flaps and slats) a safety concern. Can it interfere with the smooth movement of these surfaces? I have noticed that the movement of the flaps is caused by rotation of a threaded rod on which the flaps are mounted. If these rods have dirt on them and are not properly greased, then flaps are can get jammed. The fact these dirty planes are flying safely probably means that the critical parts on the wings are always kept clean and lubricated.

My, my, so many dirty thoughts there.

I would think CDG is best for dirty planes spotting. Been there this year, saw a bunch of them. Not too clean, just the way you like them.

Not me - give me a freshly painted out-of-the-door Airbus any day!

I don't know about dirty - this one looks like it should be sitting in a desert somewhere!!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy
