Waitlisting is a tricky thing. Reservations will basically put you on a waitlist, but they don't really check your passenger status. Example, I had about 45,000 miles in my account. Anyway, I decided to put myself on the waitlist for Business DFW
. Well, an awesome deal on Cathay Pacific came up for US-HKG
for 40,000 miles. Well, I spent my miles on that and told AA
reservations. Well, I get to the airport for DFW
and they had removed me from my economy seat and upgraded me to Business. However, they had not deducted the 25,000 miles from my account yet, as the check in agent I suppose is supposed to do it. Well, I had spent my miles on Cathay. Ended up having to cancel the the Cathay trip, 1.5 hours on the phone with AAdvantage, paid the 25,000 miles for DFW
, and got a seat on the plane. Otherwise I would have not been able to go for 3 days as the flights were oversold.
