Should I Stay On AA's Business Class Waitlist?

Fri Dec 05, 2003 10:44 pm

I am currently on the waitlist to upgrade to Business Class on an AA 777 LGW-DFW. The flight is two weeks from today.

According to the "Check Available Seats" diagram on AA.com (which I know is not completely accurate), there are 18 seats available in business class. I am only upgrading with the 25,000 mile upgrade, I am not elite anymore so I can't use upgrade credits or anything like that.

My current seat assignment in coach isn't that great. Problem is, I can't change that reservation until the waitlist clears. Right now there are some decent coach seats available.

My question: what are my chances of actually getting upgraded? I'm sure I'm behind a few elite FF members with upgrades. If my chances are slim to none, I'd rather just get off the waitlist and choose a decent coach seat before they run out, rather than take my chances and risk getting stuck in a poor coach seat.

Any advice?

I'm not sure I understand your thinking. You can easily change your seat in coach without screwing up your waitlist.

I also know that flights to/from Europe over the next few weeks are getting very full, so you'll be lucky to get an upgrade. What flight exactly are you on? And what date?

Hmmm ... maybe it's just that I can't do it on AA.com. Should I call Reservations? I tried that on another flight, and they told me they couldn't change it, but that was a while ago.

I am on AA51 LGW-DFW on Friday, Dec. 19.

Ssides, If your looking to change your seat assignment, it shouldn't be a problem. I'd give reservations a call and just let them know you want to change your seat just in case your upgrade doesn't go through.

The waitlist "command" should only drop up if they change your segment or cancel your request. The "change seat" command is something completely different.

18 seats available sounds better than just having 10 seats available.  Smile So, I would keep checking, good luck.  Smile

Waitlisting is a tricky thing. Reservations will basically put you on a waitlist, but they don't really check your passenger status. Example, I had about 45,000 miles in my account. Anyway, I decided to put myself on the waitlist for Business DFW-FRA. Well, an awesome deal on Cathay Pacific came up for US-HKG for 40,000 miles. Well, I spent my miles on that and told AA reservations. Well, I get to the airport for DFW-LGW and they had removed me from my economy seat and upgraded me to Business. However, they had not deducted the 25,000 miles from my account yet, as the check in agent I suppose is supposed to do it. Well, I had spent my miles on Cathay. Ended up having to cancel the the Cathay trip, 1.5 hours on the phone with AAdvantage, paid the 25,000 miles for DFW-FRA, and got a seat on the plane. Otherwise I would have not been able to go for 3 days as the flights were oversold.

In other words, I should make sure there are at least 25,000 miles in my account before heading to the airport.

Right now it looks good for the upgrade. I don't know if I can give you an exact number of seats, but there still are a decent amount left (not quite 18, like you had mentioned before). Coach is oversold by quite a bit. I would sit tight for now on the upgrade, and would say you have a fairly good chance (but I'm not making any guarantees).

Have you tried calling reservations yet to get your seat changed in coach?

BTW, it's my understanding that upgrades on AA international are processed in order requested, and elite status doesn't factor (which I suspect is largely because non-elites often don't even KNOW they can upgrade, so they aren't a big percentage of the upgrade requests).

I've been trying to call AA reservations in the UK for the past few days but call volumes have been high, and I don't want to waste minutes on my mobile holding for half an hour, so I will keep trying.

I know that the seatmaps on AA.com aren't always accurate, but if coach is quite a bit oversold shouldn't it appear to be more full than it is? According to that seatmap, it still shows 30 or 40 seats available in coach. I never understood these things!

Remember they do not assign all seats prior to the flight! They hold back a percentage for use at the airport, for day of departure.

I know that ... I guess the "check available seats" feature is designed to be used by seeing what seats are actually available, not whether seats are available for a particular flight.

Trust me, the flight is going to be very, very full.

As far as I know, waitlist clearance is processed with priority going to Executive Platinums, then Platinums, then Golds, then Advantage....

I looked at the waitlist the other day for the flight, and there are a good number of people on standby for business class. Since I don't know you're real name, I couldn't tell who you were.

I am right there with AAnalyst.. Just checked the loads for ya and coach is overbooked quite a bit, but not to the capacity that AA authorizes. Ya know they have a formula for everything. Business still has quite a few seats and first has quite a few as well, so I would not give up. There is still hope, especially if some business people hop up front, which will give ya an even better shot! Hope it all works out, and that your trip is a great one!! Thanks for coming with us! =)

AAnalyst and AA777MIA --

Thank you so much for your help. I just called AA Reservations here in the UK and changed my coach assignment to 30D (I was in 28H before).

I have added both of you to my respected users list. I've also added my name to my profile, in case you get the urge to check the waitlist again.

Again, I sincerely appreciate all your help! Both of you demonstrate why I always fly AA. Many thanks.
