I think this is a case of same number/different aircraft service...whereas, lets say flight 50 (just pulling out of the air) flies from some European destination to a hub with the A330, and then the domestic segment of flight 50 is operated with an A320 or something like that...US does this frequently with their flight numbering systems...a real example is flight 42 DEN
segment is operated with an A319, and then the PHL
segment is operated by a 762...with regards to LAX
, US cant fit an A330 into their gates at LAX
, thats why they never flew it there, so the largest LAX
sees is a 762...
On topic again...US briefly flew PHL
with the A330 as a continuation of FCO
...and on occasion there are repositioning flights with the A330 within the hubs, and they are operated as scheduled flights...
