Concorde Was To Be Sunk!

Sat Dec 06, 2003 7:42 pm

Just read today that a plan was put forward to BA, to turn Concorde into an Underwater Attraction off the coast of Barbados. She was to be sunk and laid to rest on the sea bed where holiday makers would scuba-dive down to see her.

I don't know about you but I think that's absolutely crazy and I'm glad BA 'sunk' the idea.

BA are quoted as saying "It was in bad taste and would make the plane look like an old ship wreck. We decided Concorde deserved a more respectful resting place"

Couldn't agree more!

Terrible idea for Concorde, agreed!

But not a bad idea for another type of aircraft. I know I would certainly pay to scuba dive down to look around a 747.

Imagine the unique perspective to be able to move around the massive airframe and view it from any angle. Being able to swim from under the wing, up to the top of the rudder before having a peek into the cockpit!

Now that would be worth trying.

Yep... glad it's not Concorde!

However, to completely submerge a 747 with a tail height of just under 20m, plus leaving room for boats to be able to pass safely without grounding on the tailfin, I reckon you'd have to drop her to 30m.

That's in the realms of the PADI Advanced diver! I'm a qualified open water diver and good for 18m. Resort divers are lucky if they get much beyond 9m.

I wonder how long it would remain looking like a 747? You'd be surprised at how quickly marine ecology will sprout up over a new 'reef'!

And just think of the ecological uproar if they didn't drain it of all hydraulics, fuels etc!

Cheers!

WTF? I would have expected that from AF rather than BA!

Yes I agree that that would have been an unworthy end for any Concorde. Since she inspired millions while in flight and is so rare it is always best to keep her in good condition in a museum for viewing rather than being ditched to produce a reef. As for using other planes, that is OK and has been done already in 1 or 2 places (I have heard of at least 1 727 being sunk).

It may interest you to know that in Trinidad a number of old buses were sunk to produce an artificial reef - but I am not aware of any diving in that area.

Your completely right, it will probably never happen. The uproar would be tremendous and it would be very difficult for the average person to be able to dive that far.

But wouldn't it be cool!

Concorde deserved much better than that. Thank God that BA said no to their idea. I suppose it could work with an other aircraft though.

Not 100 % sure, but I remember reading an article about an aircraft which was sunk off Vancouver island. Anybody has more info on that?

BA had literally 100's of bidders for the aircraft, however from the start any successful bid had preserve the aircraft in good condition for an extended period.
Any like this would not have been seriously considered for a moment, no doubt equally absurd ideas were put forward, but only serious bids from serious bidders got further consideration.
BA lease the aircraft to museums.

WTF? Wouldn't that turn into a coral reef anyway... leaving nothing for future generations but a big crusty silhouette of the Concorde?

Give China Airlines enough time... I'm sure they'll eventually oblige you guys with an underwater aircraft of some sort Big grin

That was such a shame, that CI 744. That airplane was practically brand new when those idiots put it into the drink.

Hmm, Air France didn't do all that much better in Tahiti, but at least they got the bird flying again.

Air Canada recently donated an old DC-9 i believe to be sunk with the old 737 already down there.

There is a reef off Florida made up of Navy A-6 Intruders, Intruder Reef. anything sunk to be a reef must be totally cleaned of all potentially hazardous materials. Here in San Diego they sent an old Canadian Navy destroyer to the bottom a couple of years ago. Before sinking it was totally scrubbed, all hatches removed, extra access holes cut into it etc...

If you sink it in a designated area you don't have to go as deep and can keep it at rec diver depths.

There's an environmental group in Florida that wants to sink the USS Oriskany (CV-34) as a reef of Florida. The Oriskany would become the largest object intentionally sunk to become an artificial reef. I'm personally in favor of making her into a museum, its just more dignified for a ship of her experience (Korea and Vietnam).
