Are Large LCD Screens In The Making?

Sat Dec 06, 2003 9:15 pm

PTV's are great but nothing like watching things on a big screen, are manufacturers planning big screen's to replace the projector ones?

I agree with you, watching anything on those tiny screens is like watching bugs crawl around.

I don't know if there are any plans to replace the large projection screens with large television screens, but I doubt it. Most people seem to like the idea of the PTVs or other tiny screens whether they can really see much of anything or not.

Hi, Captainink! The ones in F/C are generally a little bit bigger, but the ones in Y are tiny.

I've seen people of all ages moving their heads back and forth and taking glasses on and off to try to focus on those little screens. Sometimes they just give up and content themselves with just listening.  Smile

Northwest had a large LCD screen on the center bulkhead on the DC-10 I was on Tuesday. I would guess it was around 30", maybe a little smaller.

I doubt it was LCD. LCD is liquid crystal display, not the newest technolgy, but it is pretty recent on televisions, especially large-screen televisions. Unless NW recently decided to upgrade thier D10 fleets to state-of-the-art LCD screens, it is the same old projection screen.

I took a closer look at the screen on my return flight and it turns out it is not an LCD. The case it's in makes it look like an LCD, but up close it appears to be a flat screen CRT built-in to the bulkhead. However, it gives the impression of being a flat panel.

Here's a picture of it.

Actually thats exactly what I wante dto know, because LCD colours tend to get distorted from dufferent angles, this will do just fine, how many airlines have this installed? oh I'll do a seprate thread on it.

I recently flew on Lauda from Europe to Australian and on this particular 772 of theirs the PTV's were larger than on their other 772's and also larger than those of BA's 772's and 744's and Lan Chiles A340's.

This definitely made a difference. I think that Emirates may also have large PTV's in economy as well.

As the size of an LCD increases the production becomes exponentially more expensive. A single bad transistor means that the whole display is thrown out. This is why 51cm LCD tv's are fairly recent in the marketplace.

Making a very large LCD would be extremely expensive. LCD's are cheaper for smaller sizes, but once you get to large sizes it is cheaper to make a plasma screen.

To piggy back on what PER744 said, with all the turbulence and the traveling public banging their carryon luggage into them, I would doubt large LCD screens will be onboard anytime too soon. (Too expensive to replace and repair)

Also, in my millions of miles of flying, customers would rather take a PTV over a large screen in the front of the cabin, any day. It's terrible to have to try to sleep while lots of light is bouncing around the cabin due to the big screen projections.

When I flew ANA they had a "belly camera" display at the front of every cabin in addtion to PVOD and it was annoying to have all these images all at once. It's nice to be able to switch off your PTV when you want to sleep, but with the big screen there's no doing that!
