Europe Reservation Phone #s -- No 24 Hour Service?

I am an American who has been living in Europe for the past several months, during which time I have done quite a bit of flying. Since I've been here I've flown AA, Ryanair, British Airways, bmi, and Swiss, and all of them have one thing in common -- not a single one operates their reservations phone service 24 hours a day. Most shut down at 8:00 or 9:00 on weekdays, 5:00 on weekends.

I am not trying to start a US-Europe feud here, I am just wondering why there is no airlines in Europe seem to offer 24 hour reservations service. I don't think online booking has gotten as big in Europe as in the US. However, I also know that 24-hour customer service lines aren't unheard of in Europe, either (I have called Dell with computer problems a few times at 1:00 AM). Is this a cultural difference, is the demand not there, or is ther some labor law that prohibits this? Just curious.

Yes, it is a cultural thing. An American likes to call his airline at 3 in the morning and right after that go to the supermarket and the fast food restaurant and what not.
A European prefers a calm and quiet family life, with (legally) regulated work hours. That is also why most stores close in the early afternoon on Saturdays, and will not open until Monday morning.

Okay, for some people this may be an inconvenience, but for 99% of the people it is great.

Iberia has a 24-hour (365 days) customer service/reservations telephone number...902 400 500. This works only if you are in Spain.

Lufthansa has also a 24 hour customer service/reservations telephone number, a few month ago I called them at 2am because I had problems with my web check in.

It very different between the countries within EU. In Sweden more and more compaines and customer supports are open all days in the week, with longer and longer times. Almost every shop is open 7 days a week.

SAS have 24 h service for the business class pax.

Sside, the Dell call center is likely located in India or the Phillipines, especially if you're speaking English. More and more large corporations are outsourcing call centers and online help centers to those countries. Cheaper labor and global telecommunications are making many things possible.
Airliners.net has many forums. It has spell check and search functions. Use them before posting!

Most european callcenters are based in Dublin, Ireland.
Examples are UPS, Dell, United, Lufthansa and American. You dial and pay the local number and are connected to Ireland. Has to do with the very low corporate tax in Ireland.

Most european callcenters are based in Dublin, Ireland.

The Lufthansa call centers are located all around the world, a few month ago I called them (via the regular German telephone number) and the lady on the other end of the line told me that she was currently sitting in Melbourne/Australia. I can imagine that very well, sometimes when I spoke to some of these LH call center agents, I suggested to switch from German to English because some of them speak really bad German.

By the way, AF's European call center is located in London, I visited it two weeks ago.

well, SWISS has a 24-hour reservation line (at least in the UK and Switzerland)

I would guess that Full fare pax may be booked 24h on almost all European airlines.
In Norway you may book economy tickets until 10PM, and business tickets 24h.

BA for many years had a 24 hour telephone reservation service in the UK - with the advent of the internet as a major source of airline bookings, a 24 hour telephone number is no longer feasible, or required.

Most people can book online 24 hours - it isn't worth keeping a call centre operational for the amount of revenue generated by a small number of phone bookings through the night...
