Air Tahiti To JFK

Mon Dec 08, 2003 10:05 pm

Travel Agent magazine reports in last week's edition that Air Tahiti Nui plans to add JFK to its network in late 2004 or 2005. The routing would be SYD-PPT-LAX-JFK. I think SYD would a new destination for TN as well, as I believe it's only served with codeshare via AKL. I wonder if this means pending fleet expansion or just overall fleet realignment for the new routes.

I wonder if they would consider a nonstop from PPT to JFK. Shouldn't be a problem for the A340...

There have been rumours going around several publications and websites that TN are seriously looking at the A340-500 or A340-600. And yes, you are correct about the current status of Sydney - TN serves Auckland from Papeete, and places its code on some Qantas flights between Auckland and Sydney. The AKL-SYD flight is TN401 (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday mornings), and the SYD-AKL is TN402 (Wednesday, Friday, Sunday mornings).

TN's full schedule can be seen here:

Would a JFK-PPT via LAX route work? Why would New Yorkers travel so far when they have the caribbean much closer . New York(EWR)-Honolulu only has Continental (nosntop), and Im sure that route has much more potential than a PPT-JFK. Maybe the wealthy New Yorkers want to explore the south pacific, Im sure average joe from Queens will not even know were Tahiti is or pay exorbitant prices to go to a fench flovored island- when they have Martinique and Guadalupe in the Caribbean.

As a New Yorker who has been to both the Caribbean and Tahiti, the two places are quite different. Yes, the Caribbean is a place I expect to return to much more often during my life, as it is only a few hours away. However, Tahiti is special--as much as I love the Caribbean, I have never been blown away by it in quite the same way that I was by French Polynesia.

Is there enough demand to have as many flights from NY to Tahiti as there are to the Caribbean? No way, not even close. However, is there enough demand for a direct flight to PPT via LAX a few times a week? Quite possibly, especially with the right marketing. My impression is that, while New Yorkers think of Hawaii as a long but not unreasonable trip, there is a sense is that Tahiti is on another planet. In part this is due to the fact that there is no single-airline service, let alone single-plane service, from the NY area. The fact is, however, it's not that much farther than Hawaii, and the time difference is the same.

Althought I'm sure Tahiti would be a great destination for many on the East Coast, doesnt Qantas already fly JFK-LAX-SYD and the route is supposedly not doing that well. Maybe its a seasonal route, but if Qantas can't fill up a flight a few days a week, what good would Air Tahiti do?

I think it's all a matter of how they market the flight. PPT is a very upscale destination and there are plenty of New Yorkers with the money for such a destination and as the competition grows amongst friends of "whose been where", PPT would trump almost any Caribbean destination. And then, of course, there is the honeymoon crowd.

From NYC, I would say Tahiti is a trendy honeymoon destination for yuppie types here, but I have never heard anyone complain that they wanted a direct flight....Most people I know who have gone did a stopover in LAX or something and were quite satisfied with that arrangement...

The 345 would certainly allow for longer segments, but the only current stopover trip (PPT-LAX-CDG) would still be too long at 9764 nm. As far as capacity, I think that the 345 and 346 could be filled from May until late July. When I went to PPT this last May, the flight was full. I would personally love to see a 345 or 346 in TN colors.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy
