American's MD-11s

Tue Jan 11, 2000 6:43 am

when is american goin to be rid of their MD-11s? I live in buenos aires and travel allot. American has 2 flights to here from miami with the md-11 and i can't stand it. The seats, traytables, and legrests are always broken and the entertanment systems are horrible. When are these routes going to be replaced by a 777?

Do you mean dc-10? The md-11 is a fairly new aircraft. I've flown on it and the cockpit is new, consisting of a complete efis.(crt's etc.)

yes the md-11. american is going to sell them all to fedex. they are new but american has been unhappy with their performance. They also break down allot. I have been on many flights that have been delayed because of problems with the md-11

The MD-11s will be around a few more years, however AA will be flying the 777s from MIA to EZE very soon. Im not sure of the exact date but it will be before summer, also AA will be flying the 777s from JFK to EZE as well.

Sounds like it's american's fault, not the md-11. I have flown on the md-11 many times and have never been delayed for maintenance reasons. Also, if seats and trays are falling apart, that has nothing to do with the plane, American is just neglecting the aircraft.

Should American not get rid of the DC 10 before the Md 11. It would be more logic ???

Most or all of American's MD-11s are going to Fed Ex to be converted to freighters. In the Sept/Oct 97 issue of the magazine AIRWAYS there is a good story about the MD-11. In it, the former chairman Bob Crandall said that he was not pleased with McDonnell Douglas on the MD-11's performance. There were a lot of malfunctions to certain systems and it's advertised range was not up to par on certain routes. He said he was not taking delivery of American's 2nd MD-11 until all of these problems were corrected.

Yes, American is getting rid of the DC-10 before getting rid of the MD-11. It's normal, the DC-10 is much older. Like I said in one of my recent post about the MD-11 at American, the DC-10 will be gone next year (I suppose, oh well I'm pretty sure about that), the MD-11 will be around for an additional two years.
What is 2000? It's the end of the DC-10 at American.

Yes The DC-10 & M-11 Are Gone...

The DC-10 is in fact gone by the end of the year, and FedEx has already in fact started taking delivery of AA MD-11s. In fact, the one that FedEx crashed off the Phillippines was an ex-AA MD-11 (#1).

MD-11

You may wish you were still on an MD-11 when you fly the 777 in coach. American's MD-11 has very generous leg room in coach. Sure, the 777 has better entertainment, but on an 11 hour overnight flight from EZE, the extra legroom is nice.

Whoa! The MD90s from Reno are what American is getting rid of. They're also getting rid of any Reno MD-80 that is leased.

As far as the American MD80s, they're only ten or fifteen years old. That's young for an aircraft. I hate to say this, but their A300s are much, much older.

A300s Are Younger!

Wed Jan 12, 2000 12:19 pm

Whoa! The first A300 to be delivered American was in 1987. That makes the oldest A300 that American has is 12-13 years old! Not old. Don´t forget that they lauched the A300-600R (or some variant of the A300.) If someone remembers what variant it is, please inform.
