Entertainment is a major addition to comfort on long haul flights. Spending 10 hours in a plane means I have to be kept busy for ten hours. And modern IFE offers various options to survive the usual boredom on these flights.
Crappy movies are certainly bad, but I prefer to have a choice of at least 20 movies...so I can decide which one is interesting. It's much more annoying to be forced to watch two movies on a main screen, the chances of getting crap with two movies are higher than getting crap within a range of 20 movies. Best option is of course on-demand, then I can also decide when to watch, or when to have a break.
Modern IFE also includes option like outboard cameras (Emirates, South African, SriLankan), video games, destination information (SIA's Krisworld) or on-demand audio (such as 60 CDs on Virgin's A346).
Of course PTV should be big enough, but we have good examples like Emirates which currently offers the largest economy screens available.
Emirates' new A345 is equipped with the lastest IFE available, offering 200 movies on demand (check EK
I agree seat pitch is very important. But most carriers offer similar pitch, there's no airline which is so much different. And when I get almost the same pitch on any carrier, I want to have at least some good entertainment options...one plus and one minus is better than two minus...
However, I don't complain about LH
any longer. Since almost any long haul carrier offers an up to date economy class, I can reach any destination without LH
. And thanks to Star Alliance I still get the miles in most cases...
And not flying LH
also means avoiding that boring vacuum cleaner (A340 classic), give me a 777 any time...
