Cyprus Airways To Start Sri Lanka

Wed Dec 10, 2003 6:13 am

While looking on the website of Lebanon's English language newspaper for news on MEA flying to Brazil, I came across this article:

http://www.dailystar.com.lb/business/06_12_03_e.asp

I personally am curious what sort of traffic they are anticipating.

Between Lebanon and Sri Lanka I know there is a market, but between Cyprus and Sri Lanka?

Mostly business traffic, is it?

The flights will stop in DXB. I am sure they will pick up loads of pax there.

I wonder if there are any plans to restart service from BEY to Colombo. Very stratge that this service has been shelved for this long

BA:

I would guess it depends on the pricing, but I think it's quite a clever move.

Both Cyprus and Sri Lanka still have very strong ties with the UK - they're both ex-British colonies. There's also a fairly strong British contingent in the Gulf states.

Nor is it just the Brits. A lot of northern and eastern Europeans are very fond of both Cyprus and Sri Lanka.

It's a bit of a schlep from London or Frankfurt to Colombo via Larnaca and Dubai, but vacation packagers could have a field day with it:

"A week in Cyprus - a week in Colombo - and duty free shopping at Dubai!"

cheers

I doubt it will be labor traffic. My bet is that it will cater for the leisure and labor traffic from Southern India and Sri Lanka to Europe. They will probab;y operate a A320 on this route.

That is old news and has been discussed in the past more than once.

I don't know about the UK but as far as I know, CY doesn't look for European pax to Sri Lanka. Mainly labor traffic between Cyprus and UAE/Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka - UAE.
