HP To Allow Advertising On Tray Tables

Thu Dec 11, 2003 12:38 am

There was a very small article in this morning's Detroit paper -

America West Airlines will bring new meaning to the phrase captive audience when it allows companies to overlay airplane tray tables with advertising this month. The airline said it has entered a partnership with SkyMedia International to produce vinyl print ads that can be affixed to tray tables. Advertisers get all of the tray-table space in an entire plane.

****

Well, if HP starts this, are other airlines to follow?? Will airplane interiors some day resemble that of a city bus??

Just read the story on yahoo.com. The first company to advertise is Mercedes Benz.

I think it's a great idea, I can see many more airlines following HP.

If it helps keep fares down I'm all for it. Since the ads will only be visible when the tray is down I don't see airplanes becoming like the inside of buses yet. However, if somebody comes up with the idea of ads on the overhead bins...  Big grin

What's new about that? TAM has had ads on the tray tables on domestic flights (I've seen them a few times between SDU and CGH) for quite a while now...

I wouldn't go that far. . .but the tray table idea is a grand idea. I hate it, but from a marketers point of view, it's great. I hope it doesn't catch on and I also hope that there is enough complaints about staring at an ad for hours is downright annoying.

It's as annoying as those ads placed directly above the urinals in men's bathrooms. . .yeah, I want to look at an ad while my nose is five inches away from touching it, and I have no choice but to stare at how "you too can grow your hair back" as you stare at some man's thinned-out scalp.

Again, great idea, but bad.

I guess pop-down trays would be the perfect complement to pop-up windows.

This makes me sick. Excuse me while I throw up.

What about advertising on the inside of winglets? That was discussed on this board a few weeks ago.

Bank Of America and The History Channel are also going to advertise on the tray tables, they said only one company per aircraft though.

Given that HP has stopped serving (free) foodeven on long flights, I wonder how many people will really open the tray and thus see the ads  Smile

What difference is this from when airlines sold advertising on the ticket jackets, now it is all e-tickets so no jackets. Also when they have video programming I am sure they sell the advertising between the features. I am sure this is only the start of things to come. What about advertising on the beverage carts, in the bathrooms, they could charge more to advertise on the seat back in front of you, since you would be forced to look at it. Charge more if you want to sit in a ad free area.

Hmmm interesting idea. Will protect the trays from those evil kids with crayons!! hehe

I'm glad that they are considering selling food again. Passengers raved about it. I was a bit upset when we pulled all food on even transcon flights...most people had no problem bringing their own but still something should be offered. An employee mentioned it at our "town hall" meetings and Doug stated that they were working on bringing back some kind of "meal" program.

Even if there isn't any food served...I doubt most people would refuse a drink on a PHX-JFK flight....then they would have to put down their tray!

I seem to remember that on AA, a lot of the plastic cups had either Coke or Minute Maid logos on them, and I think the styrofoam coffee cups had the Maxwell House logo on them.

So, advertising inside the cabin isn't new.

But while people aren't pulling trays down for food service, they are pulling them down for their laptop computers.

This is even worse than the ads on the walls above urinals in bars!

Think about the ideas they can do with this, advertising on the pillow cases, logo themed blankets, either the airline or sell the spots, FA's aprons sell advertising there, pilots cases they carry, another spot to sell, beverage cart advertise on the sides of it, cups, napkins, swizzle sticks, back of boarding passes, signage at the gate, this flight brought to you by Coke, the official drink of DL, overhead bins, outside of course more costly, inside less money, seat belts, both the belt part and the buckle could all be sold, seat fabric, do like Western Pacific sell the outside for advertising. Advertising on the outside of the bathroom door while people are waiting. If they still had the curtain between first and coach you could sell that as well, coach side different ads, first class more expensive products.

I can hear the cabin announcements now

" Welcome aboard ladies and gentlemen, flight 2345 non stop service to Podunck. Please take out your safety cards from the seat back in front of you while I tell you about the safety features of this aircraft. This briefing is sponsored by the good folks at the TSA. TSA, brings screenings together."

Easyjet in the UK go one step further:

The sick bags have adverts!!

The sick bags can either be used for the traditional purpose, or taken off the plane, and popped in the post with your film inside for processing!!

Hopefully bags would not be used for both purposes!!  Big grin

Well, I have to say it's cheap. To me it gives me the impression of; "Hey we have to sell every piece of space on this plane to someone because we can't afford to do maintenance on the planes." I understand it, but I don't like it. I want low fares, but I want to feel good about the airline I am on (clean plane in good repair, pro flight crews). Blatant ads like this give me that cheap feel. I don't want my plane looking like a city bus. I hated Western Pacific for their paint jobs and I never would fly on them because of it. I hope others don't follow. There's enough ads in the inflight magazine. I think Delta's magazine has about 4 pages of content now. For now, just another reason not to fly AmWest. I haven't been on them for years. Now, It may be a bunch more years. Swing and a miss in my book.

PS-I wonder how easy it will be to peal them off the tables? Something to do on a 4 hour flight when you have no money to buy food. That will really make the planes look good.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy
