Delta 767s In The Sand

Thu Dec 11, 2003 5:43 am

Not sure if this has been discussed before..but in the 'Top of Yesterday' photo now posted...two Delta 767-200s are parked in the desert...doesn't anyone know if these two are the only two? Are there more? And how many and which DL76s are not active at this time???

Thanks in Advance,

This photo is of Goodyear airport located 20 miles west of Phoenix Sky Harbor airport. It is not "in the sand". While the photo does show some open fields, homes and businesses are encroaching on the perimeter of this airport.

Goodyear does alot of maintenance and retrofit work and that could be the reason the 767's are parked here as opposed to a graveyard field like those in the Mojave desert or near Tucson.

I checked the records and it appears Delta has at least 2 764s reg N841 and 842MH stored at BFI since September 2001 (ntu), and 3 762 reg, N112DL, N114DL, and N115DL stored in Goodyear since at least July or August 2002. Hope this helps!

DL started to retire a few 767-200's in late October as well.

As of today, Delta has not retired any 762s, nor have they announced any plans to do so.

What a waste! I hate to see 767s getting retired. I'm sure the airlines could still fly them. Maybe there not cost-effective anymore.

PSAjet17...'in the sand' is a euphemism for the 'desert' I didn't mean that literally.

Tradewind L-1011 and ATA L-1011..hey thanks a lot guys re: my question! WOW I can't believe DL is shedding a few 767s!!! That just really chaps my...nevermind! Tragic...just tragic!

I never heard of that crap!

Someone tell me I'm not deaf....Delta's 762's are still happening. It's not exactly NG, but it's still competetive technology!

I was on board N842MH in June 2002 for a thorough tour in ATL. So it could not have been stored at BFI since 9/2001. Did you mean 9/2002?

..........from that SAME thread

"Delta has not publicly stated that they intend to retire any of the 767-200's. Several were temporarily grounded and parked after 9/11 because many are in need of D checks. Delta has said that they intend to grow mainline capacity next year by approx 5% and will pull the remaining parked airplanes exc. the MD-11's out of the desert. The 767-200's will be around for at least another 4-5 years given that D checks have been recently done on several of them."

Hah...ROCK ON 762!

I saw the picture too......those two in the picture are the old paint scheme and both 762's. Sucks to see DL start to get rid of them because they are the largest 767 operator.

Look at the picture closer, they are in storage, not there for any mods. Look at the tires and the faded paint on the 767 on the right of the picture. Not to mention the DL 738 in the background in storage too.

TradewindL1011, I must be going crazy then because I flew N842MH ATL-FLL in late July of this year. I doubt theyd out some of their newest aircraft in the desert, especially the 764s.

They haven't really retired them- they bumped a few out of service with the downsizing of SLC and having added more frequency on some other routes with the CRJ. I flew one a few weeks ago:ATL-BOS. They also are probably ready for major checks (judging by liveries) and it's just simply been put on hold. I'd hate to see them retiring...... Sad

I live 5 miles from GYR. Delta has had a bunch of 757's 737's 767's & MD11's parked at GYR on & off since 9-11. At one time there must have been 30 Delta 737's parked there.
Next time try the old "dirty Sanchez" She'll love it !!!

Well, I don't know how many are out there, but I do know that their flying days are not over. ABX Air Inc. (Formerly Airborne Express) has first right of refusal on all Delta 767-200's and plans to take at least some.

I think DC-10 guy has a grip on it- those are ships that must have been due some major checks and right after 9-11, it probably seemed logical to cut costs somewhere and when you have the major check(C check I think) it gets expensive as we all could guess. There's got to be some rotation to put those ships back on line at some point, with the L-10's, 727's retiring and the MD-11's, etc. And looking at those a/c(I'm no expert), I know the L10's had WAY more cycles on them. One would hope???? Smile

Sorry about the misinformation on the 764s. I checked the database on those two a/c and they are indeed in service. My apologies on the confusion, Delta must had had them temporarily in storage after 9/11, but has since taken them up. Thank goodness too!

Just got back from a trip. I saw ship's 107 and 114 in ATL. I also went in to the chief pilot office and asked if we have retired any 762's. The answer was no.

OK, could we have a complete list of all 16 aircraft, where they are, and what livery they're wearing.

Does anyone know when N102DA is headed to the Scrapper's Torch?

N102DA is unlikely ever to see the scrapper's torch.

Ship 102 will in all likelihood be donated to the Delta Air Transport Heritage Museum when the aircraft is retired.

The 767-200 that are in GYR are not retired. They were put in storage due to required Heavy Checks that were due right after 9/11. I haven't heard when they will be put back in service. I know right now the push is on to get the rest of the 737-200 out of the desert and through heavy check. As for ship 102. It is in the hangar right now. I've heard it is going through a lot work. I don't get down to the widebody area too much so I haven't seen it for myself.
