5. US Airways (shoddy management, uncontrollable costs, poor hub structure)
4. Air Canada (hard to believe they can't turn a profit)
3. ValuJet (AirTran is probably one of the greatest turnarounds in history)
2. Tower Air (probably the worst-maintained 747s I've ever seen)
1. Aeroflot (what was its crash record again?)

Well heres my reasons:

1. EgyptAir has a terrible saftey record, as with Cubana
2. Valujet as with EgyptAir and Cubana terrible safety records, plus there service was sub par when i flew with them to ATL in 96.
3. US Air has a series of deadly crashes in the mid 90s one major one every year. Plus they lost my luggage and basically told me to go "f" myself
4. Avianca has gotten bad press in the past and is ranked as one of the worlds most unsafest airlines, that with Cubana.

From IMO, and personal experience

1. Tower Air: Flight was delayed 12 hours. Never got to fly them, glad I never did. There are so many complaints as well.
2. Continental (1980s-Until Gordon)
3. USAir (up until USAIRWAYS)
4. Spirit
5. Northwest (on international flights, with elderly DC-10/747 and domestic with DC-9.)

I don't get your NWA comment.

Fact #1. From 1987 up until last month. NWA has been ontime more than another Top 6 legacy carrier in the US since the DOT began keeping track.

Fact #2. The MSP hub and DTW (World Gateway Terminal) hub, are both in the Top 5 J.D. Power and associates Customer Prerferance list.

Fact #3. The DC9 is the most reliable plane in the fleet.

Fact #4. I think NWA's safety record speaks for itself.

Fact #5. Ok Ok. The DC10's are going quickly. And the A330 is an awesome aircraft.

Just my opinion. Safe Flying !  Smile

When was the last time you flew CO? My experiences with them have always been excellent!

My list? Can't say SOUTHWEST?

Okay...

1) WN
2) WN
3) WN
4) WN
5) WN

I didn't say Southwest... I said "WN".

Seriously, though:

1) NW (never been treated well on them)
2) UA (not from personal experience, but everyone tells me to stay away - except employees)
3) WN (sorry, but I like to know whether I have a window before I get on the plane, other reasons)
4) NJ (only prior to Rocky Spane's retirement - after that, the best!)
5) HP (only 'cause I can't think of any other really awful airlines, and I HATE cashews!)

My Worst Top Five are:

1. SunJet International- Long Delays, old aircraft, poor (nonexistant) service, and the damn smell of frest baked cookeis that you didn't get until the end (and then you got one bite sized one!!!)

2. ValueJet - Safety record says it all

3. Tower Air - dirty planes, poor reliability, just plain crummy!

4. Northwest - Their domestic service is the pits. No food, no IFE, and old planes!!

5. Aeroflot - While I'm sure they've changed, they still have the worst safety record of any carrier ever in existance!

When I say no IFE, I mean no music, no video, not even a safety video on a 757 and A320, both of which were capable 'cuz the 757 had the TVs in the aisles, LAX-MSP-LAX. Excuse me if I think that thats not cool. I don't normally bag airlines because the don't offer IFE, but that was a really long flight with a virtually non-existant Cabin Crew.

Elwood64151 0 I could say a lot of good things about UAL. Maybe they are not the best airline in the world but certainly not the worst too.

My votes:

1) Air China - crash after crash
2) Malev (I've hear a lot changed since I took 4 terrible flights with them in 2000.)
3) US Airways - really sucks - bad service and unpleasant treatment on 90% of their flights.
4) Atlantic Coast - the most ridiculous delays and lost baggage almost every time I fly with them.

5. USAir - Worst managed US major, pre Siegel.
4. Emirates - We print our own money! Economic reality doesn't matter here!
3. China Airlines - Bad maintenance, bad pilots, bad gov't influence, bad airline.
2. Tower Air - Worst maintained 747's ever, huge delays everywhere.
1. ValuJet - Alligator Bait. Don't blame us, it's Sabre's fault!!!

In my opinion, these airlines are the worst:

1. Tower Air - by all accounts, the worst airline in US aviation history
2. AOM Air Liberte - cramped seats, inept flight attendants, roudy passengers
3. Ryanair - non-reclining seats and illegal subsidies, plus the general "attitude"
4. Virgin Atlantic - surely the world's most obnoxious airline
5. America West - up until about 1 year ago they were absolutely terrible

With airline 5, America West, well they've made quite a turnaround within the last year, and way back around 1991 or so, if memory serves, they were quite good. Hopefully 5 years from now they'll no longer warrant any placement on this list. We'll have to see if the current CEO can continue the turnaround.

flyguyclt,
I respect your opinion. NW is improving, but the DC-10s (in coach) are shabby looking, and the DC-9s......could be replaced by 717s. I should have been more specific with my response. NW on there current (soon to be former with the A330s) are not as satisfying as the modern day 777s, or Airbus's. NW has a new, kickass color scheme, and will eventually have a newer fleet. They are improving, it just took a while.

Thanks for your input  Smile

And I respect your opinion. But ...They did make the most money of any legacy airline last quarter. And today, keeping it safe and a positive cash flow means a good airline? But you are correct about the DC10. However the shabbyy ones were the DC10-40's. They have all been parked now.

I'll limit my list to airlines I actually flew (no "hearsay" or gossip here)

Tarom
("oh, seat belt broken ... go to other seat. Oh, broken too. No problem, just hold tight!")
Actually the only flights I have ever been on where I was kind of very SCARED, as also ALL the emergency exits (overwing) were blocked by tons of baggage. Very scary, I can tell you.

Atlantic Coast
I have never seen a dirtier cabin on a relatively new plane, Dornier Jet. Obviously the plane hadn't seen a cleaning cloth in months

JAT
Never experienced so many "couldn't possibly care less" kind of people in one place. Horrible. So much arrogance and ignorance.
The only airline ever where I saw the purser continuing duty free sales until after landing, with the cart blocking the aisle.

Martinairyyz, why is USA Jet on your list? They don't fly people (except for a charter jet now).

4. Northwest - their domestic service is the pits. No food, no IFE, and old planes!!

Do you really need IFE on a 2-3 hour flight? Read a damn book. Also, my last flight was on a 1999 Airbus 320. Would you call that old? The DC9s are the workhorse of NW, and they have proven safe, and I think its great that they are using those planes.

For those of you who say that Aeroflot has the worst safety record think again. Go to the website www.airdisaster.com and see yourself. During the whole history Aeroflot just had two crashes. All the other crashes involved airlines operating under the Aeroflot name , but they were entirely seaparate entities. But Aeroflot itself just two accidents in 70 Years. That is an impressive record. Tell me I'm wrong.

2) EgyptAir~ Weren't they called UAA. (Use another airline!)

3) AeroFlot (and all the SU carriers during the Soviet Union's reign)
~ Crash, Crash, Crash. Did somebody say crash?

4) Qantas~ After James Strong.. No Cabin crew. Rude, obnoxious.

5) Air France~ Can speak english, Wont speak english!

Regarding Aeroflot's saftey record:

I believe Kevin is correct. During the communist time I think every commercial aircraft in the soviet union was registered with Aeroflot. That means there was cargo, bush planes as well as passenger liners etc. etc. The number of aircraft registered as "Aeroflot" was huge. Something around 10,000 I've heard, but don't quote me. So the number of crashes seems high, but the more planes flying around under that name then the higher the crash numbers will be. Especially since much of Aeroflot wasn't even pax. service but rather cargo flying in terrible conditions in Siberia.

The actual passenger service division of Aeroflot has a safety record similar to the Western majors.

Some of you put Air Canada on your list of worst airlines. I don't know where this comes from. If you're talking about AC's inability to make profit with a near monopoly in a country with a strong economy fine.
But if you complain about their inflight service....try one of the US majors. AC you still get meals and IFE on mainline domestic flights and the service is much better IMHO. Northwest the service was good, but no meals and IFE. Now, like others have said it's not important on a 3 hour flight, but for comparison AC does serve meals and has IFE. AC is actually a good product, it's just been mismanaged.

Valuejet- come on .. it served it's purpose as a LCC. One crash shouldn't put it up at #1,2,3,or 4
WN should appear more-their new boarding sucks!
UAL-this is based on on-time performance too, did any of you fly them during their problems with the pilot union?

3) WN (sorry, but I like to know whether I have a window before I get on the plane, other reasons)

Ridiculous. You give this as a reason to put Southwest Airlines among the top 5 worst air carriers in the WORLD?

I find that rather petty. For what it's worth, I have gotten a window seat every single time I've flown Southwest. You know how to do that? Check in early, and then make sure you're right at the gate when boarding calls. You'll get a window seat every time. It's not that hard to show up to the gate on time you know.

Geeze. Give WN a break will ya.

My Top 5 worst: (based purely on what I've heard, I've flown none of these carriers Smile

1. Aeroflot

These are based solely on flights I've had with them and also (except for WN) the fact they fly a certain Euro based aircraft manufacturer. The good news is they all got up and came down safely. So they really aren't so bad.

Northwest, United, US Air, Southwest

The comments I read about US flag carriers on this board never cease to amaze me:

"I want to fly across the country on a widebody with PTVs at every seat... I want large, roomy seats, five-star meals and Playboy playmates as FA. And I don't expect to pay more than $100 for my ticket."

Americans should be proud that air transportation within the USA has become mainstream.

1. Singapore Airlines
2. American
3. British Airways

5. Cathay Pacific

Of course, this list is only my opinion and what does that matter?

Well, these are only airlines I have experiences with:

1. Thai Airways (very rude crew, very dangerous if it comes to safety, very late, very dirty planes, very poor service, and and and)

2. Tunis Air

Well this is all of my list. Yes I could name more, but I am a person who makes his own decision on own experience, not what I just heard from other people.

I have been on hundreds of flights, both domestic and international, and can honestly say that there is no airline that I have hated. In fact, there are not many flights that I can think of that were unpleasant.

My least favorite flights have been with ATA and AMERICA WEST, though.

This is purely my experience and not a generalization of the airline, but my least favorite experience has been with ATA. I flew them this past summer SFO-MDW-MIA on a 757-200. The plane was cramped, the food consisted of a tiny piece of shortbread, the flight attendants were cranky and frumpy and the clientele was appaling - the lowest common denomintor of human life. I felt dirty just being on that flight. But the ticket was cheap, so I guess I can't complain. I'll definitely pay more next time.

I have flown America West several times, usually on tattered old 737-300's. The flight attendants are unmotivated and frumpy. On the one flight I was on which served a meal - an A-319 from PHX-MIA - the food was slop and awful. The inflight entertainment has been pointless trivia games which are shown via monitors. I just always get the feeling no one is motivated to be there and everything is done half-assed.

I would not consider any of these bad flights, but these are my least favorite airlines and experiences.

LOL you described the balkan attitude perfectly. It's not just the airline itself it's the mindset of the people(my parents are from Yugoslavia BTW), it's the same with their buses, trains and pretty much every form of public transport. I experienced it when i was on holidays there  Smile doesn't worry me though i get used to it.

Valuejet- come on .. it served it's purpose as a LCC. One crash shouldn't put it up at #1,2,3,or 4

Valujet may only have had 1 major crash but they had LOTS of near crashes more commonly called "incidents". I remember reading in an aviation magazine the year before the Everglades crash- 1995, Valujet had so many unsheduled landings due to maintenance issues that the FAA was investigating them.

Wooooooowww! Eventhough I respect your opinion , but damn man!
Taking into consideration the well established and internationally recognised reputation of the airlines in your list, I would say that calling them as the worst airlines is the same like going against the fact that the Earth is round!

Just my 2 cents

Galvanair777 - I wouldn't rank NW in the Worst 5 (a few years ago, I probably would have), but Ei a330-200 has a point.
The general public do not like flying on older plans. One of the first thing the press talks about after an air disaster is 1) aircraft/airline safety record and 2) age of the plane. Should one of NW's 35 year old DC9 crash, I guarantee age of the plane will be major discussion. What you and I think or know doesn't really matter all that much. Personally I like having a few last chances to board a DC10, but frankly, a 777 with IFE's are a plus. I like having a cross-ocean flight go a little quicker by being able to watch TV, or watch the GPS of where the plane is, plus, speed, altitutde, etc. Who wouldn't?
Heia Norge!

Kevin,

Of course, I was being entirely sarcastic about my list, but it was just to show that personal opinions usually do not carry a lot of credibility! I can say whatever I like and well, it's my opinion! So there!  Smile

Cheers,
Phil

Value jet....come on they had nothing to do with the crash, its been 8 years, get over it !!
America West...They have improved a lot
Tower Air...They never had a crash, just a little incident at JFK no one was injured. If they were so unsafe why 75% of their paxs were troops and their families on a plane "rented" by the USA goverment, not to mention a plane full of White house press on one of Clinton's trip to TelAviv. Horrible service and crappy interiors have nothing to do with how safe the airplane flies, just ask NWA, nice interiors, same old crappy 30 year old DC-9.
