Strike Deadline Set For Mesaba Pilots

Thu Dec 11, 2003 6:34 am

MINNEAPOLIS --- The pilots of Mesaba Airlines have announced that as of 12:01 a.m. EST on Jan. 10, 2004, they will be legally entitled to strike if they have not agreed to new contract terms.

The Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA) received notification this morning that "…all practical methods provided in the Railway Labor Act for our adjusting the dispute have been exhausted without effecting a settlement" by the National Mediation Board (NMB). This starts a 30-day cooling off period after which either side is free to take economic self-help action. Mesaba operates as a Northwest Airlink partner, providing over 600 daily flights for Northwest Airlines.

Mesaba and its pilots have been at odds over job security, compensation, retirement and work rules since June 2001 when contract talks commenced. After the contract became amendable in 2002, both parties filed for federal mediation to aid the process. Negotiations came to an impasse last week, causing the NMB to offer binding arbitration to resolve the remaining open issues. ALPA declined the offer, triggering the strike deadline.

Rest of the release is the same old blah blah blah thats in every release.
So what happens on now? Strike or will there be a setlement? What bout monday with the avro decison?

Finally, a deadline!! Perhaps now the company will actually get serious about this contract. XJ and NW both maintain that the avro decision has nothing to do with labor, therefore, this anouncement should have no bearing whatsoever.

Well here we go....30 days from here......most people are more concerned about the Arvo decision coming within days as that tells volumes about NW's plans for XJ.

Good news for travellers.....won't be any disruptions over the Christmas/New Years Holiday.

Bad news....how informed will the average passenger be of this. I mean, most of the yo-yo's who fly have never even heard of Mesaba or Pinnacle so they won't have any idea of what is going on and who might not be flying where and when. I doubt this event will get much coverage outside of MSP, DTW, or MEM so some passengers are going to be clueless if this goes that far.

In the event of a strike here, we still have some work. We've got 1 Pinnacle CRJ and we handle Comair's ramp ops.

Are there any new negotiations set to occur in the near future?

Best of luck to all involved. Hopefully a reasonable settlement will come soon. For the outstations...gonna suck for my hometown, TOL. Pinnacle pulled all flying earlier this year so now it is just Mesaba Saabs. At least the Mesaba people have 4 CoCo flights to work...that's something I guess.

Well....who among us is actually deceived enough to believe that mgmt is even interested in hammering out a settlement before a strike.

I still can't help but wonder what starting pay for Capt-F/O's will be at Big Sky.....probably more comparable to Commutair or Metro pay I'll bet.

I don't know if this is related or not to Mesaba's troubles and their relationship with NW, but I have been checking out flights to Boston for the end of February or beginning of March out of Kalamazoo. Anyway, what I noticed was that all the flights right now are scheduled to be either DC-9 or CRJ, not a single Mesaba flight that I could find. Usually there is a mix of DC-9's, CRJ's, ARJ's, and SF340's (except for this time of year when there is no mainline service for a couple months). I really hope they put a couple XJ flights back in the schedule for late winter, I was looking forward to trying to get on an ARJ again.

AZO - NW matches capasity to demand. Apparently NW feels the avros can be better used elsewhere, like on longer segments.

Geg2RAP - IF a strike even occurs, it won't be until Jan 10. So your MSP-RAP flight on Jan 11, should go as scheduled.

Airdude- I can't imagine our esteemed SLT WANTING a strike. Now they have every incentive to actually negotiate seriously. Do you honestly believe Big Sky can become a replacement carrier for XJ overnight? WE're talking months and months of training and what not. NW wouldn't let a strike hinder their bottom line for that long. I guess we'll see what happens now huh?

The long-range schedule online isn't always accurrate. Most everything domestically beyond Feb. is pretty much just place-holders that aircraft will be adjusted with demand, aircraft in service, maintenace needs, etc as the schedules are finalized and uploaded.

12/11 you're fine, thats tomorrow....nothing to worry about til the 10th of January

I think NWA is going to let XJ hang out dry. Here in OKC we are going to beef up our DC9's. Right now we have 5 ARJ 1 CRJ and 1 DC9, but starting in Feb we go to 4 Dc9's and 3 ARJ's. So who knows wat's going to happen.

I still fail to see how NWA thinks it would make sense to "hang XJ out to dry". They do have an investment in XJ, and if nothing else, could use it to bolster their pension plan, like they did with Pinnacle.

Azjubliee, now I think BOTH sides have a reason to taking the negotiations seriously. You might have gotten a near 100% vote on the strike auth, but now you'll see the real feelings come out. Some of your coworkers are going to start worrying about how they'll make that house payment, even with strike pay. There's an old saying: "Pick the hill you want to die on".

It'll be very interesting to see how that decision plays into the next 30 days. I doubt that any fleet/staffing decision has ever taken place during a cooling off period before....

I think all airlines saw what happened with DL in CVG when Comair went on strike and the effect it had. I believe that is why you see more than one regional flying from the majors hub. No one hub is totally relying on a single regional.

True, and that's what Comair and ASA will never be merged. I hope that NW learned from it, and doesn't decide to put all their eggs in the Pinnacle basket. But now that Pinnacle has been spun off, there's no need to keep building their operation back up.

Yeah, just wait til Pinnacle pilots negotiate, they've got all of NW's CRJ feed and could really put the hurt on.

Word I hear is the Arvo decision will be made public sometime tomorrow......

Hopefully some good news comes around tomorrow. It could go either way and I would not be overly surprised. The ARJ service will be finished at GFK just into 2004 due to upped operations of the -9s. Looking at future schedules, it appears ARJs are supposed make a return later in the spring. We all know what that relies on though... Good luck Mesaba guys!

The only good thing if NW gets rid of the avro is if its puts Airdude66 out of a job. Mesaba doesn't need someoen with your attitude brining the rest of us down. Also if you don't like the way the employee groups act with contract negoitons and don't want to support anyone, then you shouldn't be in the industry.
I'm sure the pilots will love to see all the negitive post from an ops mgr in detroit since they will be posted in the crew room and i'm sure that you won't have the guts to stand up and say anything in person

Haha, you all have to work together because you are a part of the team. If one part falls, you all fall. AD has to come on here and throw mud because he can't do it anywhere else. There is a lot of stuff up in the air right now so we just get to sit back and wait for now. Happy 100 posts btw  Yeah sure
