Order Rumors.

Wed Jan 12, 2000 12:11 am

I thought you all may like to know of orders that are more than shall we say "rumors". America West will order 12 757-200s and ATA will replace their 727-200 fleet with either 738 or 321 and either the 767-300/400 or A330 for the L1011s.

If AWA really does order 12 new 757s from Boeing, it will be the most interesting news I've heard from the airline in a long time. They were giving the A321 serious consideration; however, since IAE won't be developing the V2500-A7, Airbus won't be able to deliver the performance U.S. airlines need.

I wonder why they haven't been more aggressive about used acquisitions. National has had no problem getting 757s. Also, the sale-leaseback of a 757 or two a few months ago made me think they were eventually going to dispose of the 57s. N291AN a.k.a. PH-AHK, N916AW, and 24291 is sitting in PHX; I don't know why they haven't snapped this aircraft back up. I believe the lease terms are not favorable. Perhaps a new order allows them better financial terms.

Maybe HP feels it is time to replace their 757-200 with new ones? The 757s that they currently have are some of the older 757s being built for the majority in 84 and 85. They newest they have is a few 89 builds. They only own one of the 757s the other 11 are leased. We don't know though if the order is for replacement or expansion. Also looking into whether or not a few 757-300s may be delivered also.

There is no way in hell they are going to replace a perfectly good '84 757--that is a plane with plenty o' life left. Remember, this is an airline that has no problem flying aircraft over 30. If the rumor holds true they will be for expansion, without a doubt, although we may see some aircraft shuffled around due to various lease terms.

I hadn't considered the possibility of a -300--that would be interesting, although I would guess unlikely.

Maybe it's much ado about nothing!

I was throwing the replacement out there for well I don't know it was pretty silly. The orders will be for expansion, but will they let the leases expire on the 757s they currently have when they get their newer 757s? I would hope that HP would order a few 757-300s but it seems the order "rumor" only states 757-200s.
