UA Flights From Australia

Thu Dec 11, 2003 11:29 am

Just a question, now UA flies these flights that i Know off
UA816 MEL-SYD-LAX
UA862 SYD-SFO

Now when I pulled up on the UA website, I also got this flight for mid june next year.
UA870 SYD-ORD
Does UA plan to fly this route? Any details on this? Just curious

Also, I saw on amadeus.net that for some flights in June next year, US Airways is codesharing in some UA flights to Australia.

Well they don't have a plane that can make that flight, so it either goes through SFO or LAX. Maybe the possibility of via HNL. I assure you its not non-stop. Maybe its a new 1-stop to compete if Qantas starts ORD service.

Well that was my thought as well, didn't they used to run something like this before? But that might have been ORD-LAX-AKL-MEL when they ran that service.

Also was it or is it still possible to book MEL-SYD-MEL flights on the UA 744 service they have on UA816?

SYD-ORD is a continuation of the SYD-SFO flight UA 862, UA changes flight numbers to SFO from Jan7th 04. it becomes UA 870 from SYD-ORD via SFO using the 744 and 757. nothing new apart from flight number

Further to Qantas005's post, UA is changing their 815/816 flights to LAX from Sydney renamed as UA840/UA839. This change also takes effect January 7th 2004.

After Ansett went belly up in 02, the Oz government gave any airline flying into Oz that wanted it permission to carry local traffic on domestic sectors. UA had such permission for several months, at least. I doubt it is still effective.

UA flies two daily flights from the USA (one each from SFO and LAX) to SYD. They also operate a SYD-MEL flight as a tag on one of the USA-SYD flights -- UA does not have local traffic rights on it.

Dont look for any major international expansions from United Airlines within the next few years. In the meantime be content that the airline can still operate both domestic and international at the same time.

Futhermore, you will be seeing the red Qantas kangaroo in O'Hare well before you will ever see a ORD-SYD nonstop on United Airlines!

Not particularly instructional, since QF announced ORD service quite some time ago, as a one-stop thru LAX.

I'd imagine if UA felt the need to respond with a one-stop it could be arranged with the drop of a hat.

they have suspended the flights and have been pulled from the system. maybe 2005 at the earliest now.

Gigneil,

*** NEWSFLASH ***

United Airlines has been offering one-stop flights to Australia from Chicago for over 5 years. The flights have rotated via San Francisco and via Los Angeles both using the 747-400, 767-300 or 777-200 to the West Coast and a 747-400 to Australia! True this is not an actual one-stop flight. However... in the U.S. this is allowed and is considered direct service even though there is an actual aircraft change!

In addition the rumors of a NONSTOP to Chicago are complete rubbish! If and when Qantas does commence service look for a routing via Los Angeles.

Irishpower,

Yes, indeed it would be rather splendid to see the Qantas fleet back at San Francisco. It was rather nice when they operated the 747SP via Papeete and service continued to Sydney. Or the more recent until 1992 when they operated a 767-300 from San Francisco to Honolulu where passengers would have continued on a 747-300 to Sydney!

However, in the interim Qantas has built an outstanding presence in Los Angeles. There is something like 5 daily flights or so at this point all operational using the 747-400 fleet. The only way that you would see Qantas return to San Francisco would be if United Airlines was to pull the Australia routes.... Which doesnt look very likely... However, if the United woes linger.. Look for Qantas to move in rapidly and efficiently to expidite United's move from Australia!

Flyinghighboy,

i'm sure the passengers from UA flts from Australia deplane in T7 since they do have their own customs/immigration (please correct me if i'm wrong).

The only thing that i can think of if they deplane at the TBIT is if T7 is full of planes and no gates are available. A friend of mine who works for Virgin at LAX tells me there are times there T2 is full and the Virgin planes have to go to TBIT.

Flyinghighboy,
from what i can remember...T7 is just a few shops and restaurants. nothing really special about it. T6 has a smoking area (if ur a smoker) and TBIT has many food joints in there. Enjoy ur flt to LAX and to ur final destination!

I arrive LAX in the morning but my domestic UA flight leaves in the evening, what is the earliest I can check my bags in to avoid carrying them around LAX

Can domestic pax take advantage of UA's domestic sector- MEL-SYD if they want to? It would be pretty cool flying MEL-SYD on a UA 747-400 insetad of a boring 737.

- Most passengers on the SYD-MEL flight are connecting from UA's two flights... and most passengers on those two flights are going to SYD.

- OAL (mostly, but not limited to, Star Alliance partners) book passengers onto UA's flight (originating in other international destinations).

It's my knowledge that if half the seats in the aircraft are occupied, the flight's having an above-average load... still, since the aircraft would otherwise sit in SYD and fares to MEL are higher than those to SYD, there's potential to make $$$.

Not really... Qantas doesn't have local traffic rights on LAX-JFK. While I firmly believe the Australian government will do anything to protect Qantas, I think they're right in not offering UA Fifth Freedom rights on SYD-MEL...

Do they really think that letting UA fly 1 sector with 1 747-400 is really going to damage their precious QANTAS who already have umpteen amount of daily flights from MEL-SYD? From a pax point of view it would be good as the 747 seats would most probably go very cheaply just to be filled.

But if they let UA do it, all the other airlines who fly the MEL-SYD route will want it, plus other local traffic rights.

Do you really think letting Qantas fly one sector (LAX-JFK) three times a week with a 744 is going to damage the US carriers?! : )

UA also used to fly LAX-SYD-BNE but stopped the SYD-BNE portion in 1992 or 1993. They did not have local traffic rights on that sector.

UA did have local traffic rights on SYD-MEL-SYD for about two-three months right after Ansett's demise as did all other foreign carriers, including Air China, Lauda Air, Gulf Air etc.
