Impact Of EU Tariffs On Boeing?

Thu Dec 11, 2003 5:35 pm

Now that the US has decided to exclude certain countries from Iraqi reconstruction contracts, the EU is IMO more likely to impose the tariffs granted by the WTO over subsidies given to large US exporters, including Boeing. Does anyone know, if Boeing's products are targeted by these tariffs? IMO they'd be a key candidate, since Airbus is an EU-based alternative.

Which ones? The ones because of the US steel tariffs? Since the US is lifting those, I don't see the EU acting on that - or does the EU currently also have "tariff-rights" based on other reasons as well?
Smile - it confuses people!

The list of targeted products that were submitted, for the WTO ruling on US Tax issues, did not include airplanes.

To tie the Iraq-rebuilding busines to the ongoing tariff quarrels would be about the stupidest thing anyone could make and result in a full-scale trade war, and trust me on this one, that will not happen! Besides how could the EU decide on something like that as only a few EU member states have been "hit" by the GWB's ban, when the others wouldn't agree!!??
I know it's only VfB but I like it!

The EU has "tariff-rights" also on the FSC grounds, for up to USD4B.

Andreas,

Only Britain and Spain _woudn't_ be hit by the ban, so the contries that are hit constitute a majority in the EU.

Joni:

I don't believe that the tariff issue will see the light of day. It appears that the next session of Congress will deal with the subsidy issue before the 1March04 deadline. Exactly what will replace it is open to question at the moment, but this will be dealt with just as the steel program was. Nobody in their right mind in this day and age of global interaction will want a trade war.
