Top 5 Best And Worst Airports

Thu Dec 11, 2003 10:33 pm

OK, at first I thought the whole "Top 5" idea was kind of silly, but now I'm intrigued. What are your Top 5 airports -- not for spotting or variety of aircraft, but layout, appearance, convenience, etc.

My Top 5:

1. DFW
2. AUS
3. DCA
4. MSP
5. ORD

The Bottom 5:

5. JFK
4. IAH
3. BWI
2. ATL
1. IAD

Hope I don't make anyone too mad.

Bottom 5

I can understand how some connecting traffic is difficult at DFW -- but in my experience it's hard at IAH as well!

But just wait until SkyLink is up and working!

Top 5:

DCA
PIT
DEN
MCO
PVD

Bottom 5:
SAN
BOS
JFK
CAI

Bottom honorable mention:
ATH (old)
DFW (bad design for connecting traffic)
BWI (overcrowded, bad parking/roadways, long lines, ugly terminal)
IAD (build the tunnel and get rid of those 1960's people movers already!)

I'm still baffled that a world class city like San Diego has yet to do somthing about its 3rd world airport.

Ybacpa,

just curious, what have you got against DCA? The new terminal opened in '98 (i think) is beautiful, easy to navigate, has great views of the monuments and Potomac, and is 10 minutes from downtown via metro. What more could you ask for?

No. 1: SNA! Where else are you going to be surrounded in Marble and greeted with Palm Trees? Cleanest, Beautifullest airport  Big grin

Worst? DTW and LAX (I can't come up with 5).

The United terminal at DTW seems to be the armpit of the place (I don't fly NW, so I don't see the new terminal that much).

LAX is just disgusting when you're flying domestic. Last time I flew out of LAX and was sitting at the gate, for a minute there I thought I was in some run-down hospital waiting room in the middle of South Central.

YVR gets my top vote... very very nice, relaxing and modern.

I dread connecting through heathrow every time i go back home... its a dirty old and crowed place (depending on which terminal).

My Top 5:
Seoul (ICN) - beautiful architecture.
Fort Lauderdale (FLL) - fast in and out, easy to navigate, 5 mins to the beach!
Amsterdam (AMS) - easy transfers, great shopping.
Barcelona (BCN) - chic airport for a chic city.
Vancouver (YVR) - very Canadian, clean.

Bottom 5:
Sao Paulo (GRU) - very ugly, rude and disorganized.
Miami (MIA) - hell to arrive at. spread out, dark.
New York Kennedy (JFK) - hell to arrive at. Spread out and dark.
Los Angeles (LAX) - just nasty, crazy line ups, rude service, ugly.
Toronto (YYZ) (Terminal 1 and 2 resemble 3rd world bunkers.) can't wait for the new Terminal 1 - about time.

cheers!

I agree with people ranking CDG among the worst and among the best.
The worst : terminal 1 : old, sometimes dirty and needing a lot or refurbishing.
The best : Terminal E and F : modern, clear, wonderful architecture...

I haven't been to a bunch, but from what I have experienced here is my list:

Best--
1. PIT
2. PHX (once you're inside!)
3. SFO
4. DEN
5. DCA

Worst--
1. JFK (horrible food, dark and dingy--from Terminal 7)
2. IAD (Terminals C and D are the most claustrophobic places I've been...could use some windows!)
3. LAX (no comment needed...)
4. CUN (no A/C, NO windows, even dingier than JFK)
5. PHX (trying to navigate with the airport signs could drive a person to drink heavily!)

My top 5,in every conceivable order:
1.PVD,easy,new
B.PDX, new C,D,E areas,like the market area,not too busy.
3.ACV (Eureka/Arcata,CA),nice small facility with nice overlook of Pacific Ocean as you walk out the door! (On a clear day!)
D.ORD, 'cause you can traverse ALL the concourses (except intl) going thru security only once!! Nice for people w/a lot of time and like to see airplanes!
5.ANC, I really love the state of Alaska.

Bottom 5:
A. LAX, would you like a book or to make a donation? Enough said.
2. RNO, lost too much $$ there!
C. MCI, whoever designed the "3 ringed circus" there never wanted to connect there!
4. WRG (Wrangell,AK) PSG (Petersburg,AK) etc.,All cookie cutter designs with city names on front on term to remind you where you are. Very functional, just not too imaginative.
E. GEG, You have to fly AS/QX to have access to the A&W!!

Top 3 (in no order):
IAH - Terminal E just opened, wide open space, lots of natural light
NRT - Terminal 2 is spacious, Terminal 1 in the middle of major renovation
SAT - Terminal 1 is beautiful, even 17 years later

Bottom 3 (in no order):
HOU - Dreary and rundown (but they did build a new central concourse)
IAH - Terminal C is dark
MIA - Just about the whole terminal/concourses is chaos, especially through customs

Are they still using the old terminals at CVG? You know, where you catch UA and/or CO flights... "B", I think. Who designed that? The windows run from the floor up to a height of about 4 feet - you cannot see out unless you sit down in one of the 15 or so chairs located there...

Delta's is nice there though...

Rkmcswain:

The old terminals are still in use. Terminal 2, which you are talking about is used by united, american eagle, and continental express. I hate those windows, the architect must have been a midget. They have renevated it a a little adding a restaruants, bank, and an office store along with new carpet and cielings, which makes it feel more open. Continental will be moving out of terminal 2 in the near future and over to terminal 3 (like nwa just did november 1st). Terminal 1, which serves US Airways Expess, Skyway, and NWA until recently is a worse than a greyhound bus station. It will most likely be closed down once continental makes their move, freeing up enough space in terminal 2.

Anyways for my vote, based on my small ammount of experiences (which I hope to change in the near future)

Best:

PIT
MCO
HNL (love the open air terminals)

Worst:

SJC
ATL

Well, here's my 2-cents worth:

Top (no particular order)

LHR
SEA (I'm from Seattle, so I'll confess a bias!)
SFO
DSM (I live here now -- very easy to navigate)
SLC

Bottom (again, no particular order)

DTW (the old NW terminal -- not flown to the new one yet)
LGA
PHX
MSP
JFK

Like others here, my list is subject to change! I'm sure I could name more in both lists as well.  Smile

Lot of diversity here! Well, here's my two cents:

Top 5:
1. SYD (I love everything about it!)
2. SFO (New Int'l terminal has a lot of space)
3. DEN (Very spacious)
4. ORD (For a big airport, they have done it right)
5. JFK (I'm originally from NY, so I might be biased)

Worst 5
5. IAD (Trailers as concourses?)
4. DFW (especially when the TRAAM doesn't work)
3. LAX (zoo)
2. SAN (they've got to do somthing about it)
1. EWR (I call it Josef Stalin Int'l)

Best:
1.KIX - Easy to use, amazing terminal, lots to do(outside of the secure area at least)
2.OKA - Easy to use, beautiful terminal, tropical atmosphere
3.DTW - Easy connecting airport, awesome terminal
4.MCO - Airside 4 is very nice, clean, modern
5.CVG - Terminal 3 makes a great connecting airport, A and B are fairly modern feeling, easy to get around

Worst:
1.TUL - Dirty, humid feeling terminal, didn't seem that convienient for a smaller airport
2.MCI - Far from the city, parking's a hassle, narrow and crowded terminals which the renovations can't fix, pre-renovation terminals are ugly
3.ICT - Although it's easy and convienient (great access to the city), the terminal, especially the concourses, needs a renovation or a replacement, the place is an eyesore with not that many windows, really low ceilings, and brick everywhere
4.ATL (Concourse C) - crowded, not much to do, often messy..at least it's easy to get to the other concourses (A,B, and E are my favorites here)
5.uhh...not really any more airports I've been to that I disliked. Probably MEM but It's been a long time since I've been there and I like the place for sentimental reasons.

best five:

amsterdam-schipol (ams), mcnamara terminal at detroit (dtw), shanghai-pudong (pvg), paris-charles de gaulle (cdg), and washington-national (dca)
worst five:

san francisco (sfo), detroit before mcnamara terminal (dtw), shanghai-hongqiao (sha), lhasa tibeb (lha), and xian china (xia?)

mentionables:

-detroit went from worst to first in my book with the addition of the new nwa/mcnamara terminal
-dallas/fort worth (dfw) is great when originating or departing dallas, but can be brutal when transfering and going from end to end.
-atlanta does a pretty good job considering the volume of traffic it handles.
-washington-national's favorability has waned given the heightened security restrictions.

BEST
1. YVR (best airport in the pacific northwest. a reflection of the city itself, very clean and international. my first choice for Asia flights.)
2. PDX (there's no place like home, very friendly comfortable feel just like the city)
3. CVG (nice, easy place to make connections)
4. DCA (very pretty, and so much more convenient than IAD for domestic)
5. SNA (very nice airport, aesthetically pleasing and convenient)

Not best or worst:
SEA (my other home airport, but I like PDX and YVR better. pretty good Asia service between United, Northwest, Asiana and EVA.)
JFK (a total zoo, but a fun atmosphere if you don't have to worry about making a connection)
MSP (seemed a bit spread out for a domestic hub, but ok overall.)

WORST
1. PHL (bad experiences there, mostly US's fault probably, but still...)
2. BOS (weather delays of some sort almost every time I fly in there, plus it's a disorganized zoo anyway)
3. LAX (never flown international out of there but the domestic terminals are nasty, I'd rather fly into SNA anyday)
4. MEM (a depressing place aesthetically, some one made a comment about LAX seeming like a hospital waiting room - that works for MEM too.)
5. IAD (I prefer DCA or even BWI. I'll avoid it when I fly to DCA unless I need to make a connection on UA.)

4. Sydney Kingsford Smith (SYD) ~ Getting Better, its quite good.

RE: Top 5 Best And Worst Airports

Doninfc,
I've always had problems at DCA... weather delays, ATC delays, maintenance delays. Granted that is just my experience.

I also always seem to be flying through the antique terminal, which I'm sure doesn't help. As for convienance, yeah its really convienant to DC, but my business is primarily centered in the 'burbs, so its only sometimes the best option for me.

Also, I only listed airports I frequently suffer... erm... fly through. If I included my occasional disasters at JFK, PHL, FLL, MCO, AMS, DUB, LAX, PBI and others I'm sure DCA wouldn't be on the list. Actually, ORD, IAH, and LGW wouldn't either.

Top 5 (in no particular order):

EWR
BWI (international pier)
IAD
DEN
ATL

Bottom 5:

YYZ (A Bloody mess. Plus A bad experience a while back)
PHL ( I positovely hate everything about this airport and would consider flying out of BWI EWR or JFK the next time i fly international)
LGA (not convenient to get to, cramped and unattractive)
ISP (inconvenient to get to far from the 5 boroughs)
MBJ (terminal is unattractiveand cramped and the place is a zoo in the PM)

Top 5 (no particular order)

SMF - Sacramento, CA (clean and efficent)
PDX - Portland, OR (lots of parking, tidy and efficent layout)
ORD - Chicago, IL (so huge, yet decently well done)
SFO - San Francisco, CA (Hometown, new Intl' terminal is great)
EUG - Eugene, OR (current hometown airport, small and efficent)

Some west coast bias there, but ........  Smile

Worst

OAK - Oakland, CA (dirty, cramped, over crowded, poorly lit)
OAK - Oakland, CA (tiny terminals, out of date baggage claim)
OAK - Oakland, CA (horrible curbside layout, tiny check in area)
OAK - Oakland, CA (ugly design, not one modern piece in it at all)
OAK - Oakland, CA (I f****** hate this place)

This is based on all my experiences I´ve made over the years in flying both private and as a F/A!

Best:

1) CVG (it´s gorgeous, clean, new, convenient, and DL´s 2nd hub)
2) FRA (my homebase)
3) ATL (very easy to find your way through and very functional)
4) JFK (of course I have to admit, I never had to change terminals)
5) ORD (just like it, very interesting and nice airport)

Worst:

1) CDG (parles vouz anglais, avec moi??? No!!! just horrible and complicated)
2) MIA (never felt more unwelcome to the USA, rude and arrogant staff)
3) YYZ (but things are definetly getting better soon)
4) LHR (this place is a dump, ugly, old, filthy)
5) DL), Germany">DUS (haven´t been there since construction work is completed)

Best regards,
