BA Not Flying To SAN Anymore?

Was wondering, is British Airways still flying the 777 into SAN, or did they stop service? I just recently returned from an 8 month deployment, and realized, I havent heard Speedbird on my scanner or seen it on my flight tracker since I been back home.

Yeah, BA275/4 was suspended on the 26th October.

Is that seasonal or perminant? If it's perminant, than that's ashame! I guess SAN is losing their I'ntl. carriers.

Ok,

I dont know. I would almost rather see a Virgin 340 in SAN. It would be nice, if BA pulled out for good, if Virgin started service.

I'm not very convinced on VS wanting to start serving SAN. I think that if BA suspended the route for good, it's because the airline had very powerful reasons for doing it (maybe not profitable, really don't know).

Imagine that. One of the most worldwide extended airlines decided to not serve SAN from the UK, I don't think VS will, being waaay more selective on the markets they serve than BA. Really don't see it in the horizon.

It's a shame though the sole international carrier with schedule flights to SAN is AM.  Sad

Don't forget that AS flies to SJD!

I worked at SAN while BA was flying there. The loads on the flight were actually fairly good. The problem was that it was only the loads in coach. The flight would literally be waaaayyyyy oversold in Coach, and only be booked with like 1 person in First, and 10 people in Business. The flight used to go out fairly full, but most people in First and Business had just been comp upgraded to prevent oversales.

The ticket prices in coach were also very appealing (i.e. cheap), which didn't help BA too much.

There was a rumor a few years back, right after BA started flying the route non-stop (eliminated the stop in PHX), that Lufthansa was looking at starting non-stop service from FRA with an A340. Too bad we never saw it happen...

If you think of it, both markets at least make more sense than SAN, both in terms of tourism and leisure. Besides, they don't serve, for example LAS, with the frequency that BA served SAN.

If you take a look and compare both airlines' networks, you see that VS's destinations are much more select.

Anyway, didn't know for sure if you were just joking ironically or being serious.  Innocent  Big thumbs up

Since this thread looks to be more active than the other one, I'm reposting my comments. One subject on the other thread was the prospect of carriers other than BA serving SAN.

While the flight proved unsuccessful for BA during the months leading up to its suspension, we must remember that there were very important extenuating circumstances. Not only was there 9/11 and SARS, but also the Iraq war.

Once the economy settles into expansionary mode (fairly soon, I should imagine), I am certain we will see the return of transatlantic service. If served correctly, the market has major potential.

Personally, I think we would see LH here before KLM, but not by much! Amsterdam is the 2nd biggest O&D city out of SAN, after London (this information verified by the Director for Airport Business and Administration during the Port District era). With partnership agreements with Northwest and Continental already in place, plus the inevitable tie-up with Delta and SkyTeam, KLM could leverage connection opportunities for the San Diego market in a way British Airways never could. The same goes for Lufthansa and its relationship to United and US Airways. Remember, British Airways had zero revenue-generating assistance from American Airlines, due to antitrust restrictions. One reason why British Airways temprorarily failed in San Diego, but found amazing success in Phoenix, is the America West codeshare arrangement. For medium-sized markets like San Diego, Phoenix, or Portland, domestic partnership agreements are essential, and that's something BA just never had here.

At any rate, if nobody beats them to it, I think we'll see BA back here by next year. Probably as an extension of PHX (going to a 747 this summer!) or LAX.

...there's also the possibility of this route returning with a new three-class ship, as opposed to four.

Actually, SAN did pretty well in our premium cabins, Club more than First. Many well-to-do people from La Jolla used our premium cabin services to LHR and beyond. I just don't think there was enough demand at this time to make it worth the effort. Right now, we are going through a "Future size and Shape" program and if something within our organization is not cutting it, it's going to get "left behind".

Having said all that, I find it very hard to believe the discontinued BA SAN service will be permanent. I do think it will resume within the next two years. Many people (from south of LA) preferred to travel from SAN instead of LAX. I think more than anything, it will be operated direct from LHR using a B-777-200 with New Club World, World Traveller Plus, and World Traveller. No First (like PHX and DEN).

i would personally rather drive down to San Diego from Orange County instead of dealing with LAX. Unfortunately I don't live in OC and so LAX is the best option, but how strong is the covariance between the decrease in loads on LAX-LHR to the loads on SAN-LHR when that flight is operational?

I wonder why Condor (DE) does not extend their 767 service from FRA to LAS onward to SAN a couple of times a week? Also, I understand AF was interested in SAN before 9/11 as well so we should have some sort of Trans-Atlantic service if not this summer (looks unlikely), then by summer 2005.

Air Canada returns to SAN May 2 with their A319 non-stop to YYZ.

Tampa is not getting first class service. What Tampa is getting is flat-beds in business. Orlando is getting the same thing.

British Airways never flew 4-class to San Diego. What they flew was F/C/Y. Coincidently, prior to being canceled, British Airways was supposed to start flying C/Y+/Y 772 on the route eff. 27Oct03.

BA DFW flights are operated using a B-777-200 with a F/J/W/Y configuration.
(W = World Traveller Plus/Premier Economy)

Only a handful of longhaul flights are not equipped with F. Destinations like PHX, DEN, YUL, CCU, MCO, TPA, and the daily MAN-JFK flight (B-767-300ER with no F) to name most of them.

I'm very surprised that PHX does not have F service. I would have thought First Class could make a profit from PHX. When the 744's come will they also be without F service?? Does anyone have a seatmap pic of the BA 777's and 744's without the F cabin?

I'm very surprised that a market like Montreal (YUL) doesn't have First Class service. That destination is clearly on the 'business' side of the spectrum rather than on the 'leisure' end (in the same way that Boston is, Toronto is, et al). Why is Montreal a non-FC route? Puzzling.
