Will BNA See Intl Service Again?

Sat Dec 13, 2003 11:59 am

Hey Guys

I lived in Nashville for a while...I vaguely remember the days when American was operating the BNA-LGW (maybe LHR?) flight. Now, of course, WN has taken over. I was just wondering if anyone thinks BNA will ever see intl ops again.

Gotta say, I miss BNA!!! The agents and ground crew there were the best!!!!! It was a great hub when AA operated it there. I think closing BNA was a HUGE mistake...

AA777MIA, no it wasn't a huge mistake to close it. They don't even need STL which is a. a better yielding market b. better O/D market. There is no need for a true,(emphasize true) third midwest hub w/ ORD and DFW. However, Yes, BNA-LGW was operated with a 762. Hub was closed in 95, and there is just no need for it nor RDU or STL as of right now. STL may possibly come of more importance in the future if things go right.
Addressing the international situation, I doubt it. Europe is kind of out of the quetion, BA isn't really adding markets, they are more or less subtracting them (CLT, SAN, possibly TPA in the future). LH added CLT, and on their wish list awhile back was MSY, SAN, MSP and STL. AF is very doubtful, and KL/NW is over at MEM. Mexico is your best bet for new service since you already have YYZ ACJazz serrice. If you are going to hope for something hope for something like CUN, or maybe even MEX but I highly doubt even both of those. Sucks being a mid-major market right now doesn't it? Big thumbs up

Heck...the biggest thing we see now at BNA is a Delta 757 to ATL......Other then that, it's all Southwest. Air China brings a 747-400F every night from ANC to supply the Dell Computer Shipping Center.......

LambetMan:

STL was not even an ITCH in AA's pants when it was open... I was referring to the fact that AA shut down BNA and RDU in the late 90's... It was a HUGE mistake, because it closed the doors on the south for AA... BHM, MEM, GSO, GSP, SAV, etc....

MEM, GSO, GSP, SAV...wow lucrative markets. They have MIA they are doing fine, they can have their little focus city at RDU or whatever but shutting down BNA wasn't a mistake.

I wouldn't bet on international services to BNA right now. If MEM gets limited service out of the US, I wouldn't hold my breath for any other city on the state.

As for AA closing down the BNA hub. You may be mixing up the reality with your feelings AA777MIA, I mean, I think your being a slight subjective on that side. I also believe that AA knew what they were doing when the shut down most of the cities operations. If it had been a mistake, AA would have picked up the majority of the routes again by now. Don't you think?

I think one of the major thing that is holding the international traffic at BNA back is the location in the country. ATL is 3 and half hour drive.

Nashville has only about 400,000 people maybe 500,000 maybe that has alot to do with it also.

And also if I remember right AA 767 to LGW was stopped well before the pull out of AA at BNA because it did not get enough support for it.

Maybe Bruce can add his thoughts to this threads.

BA isn't really adding markets, they are more or less subtracting them (CLT, SAN, possibly TPA in the future).

British Airways, who recently increased TPA-LGW service to 5x weekly (and might go daily this summer), and is introducting flat-bed business class seats to Tampa in April, is not leaving Tampa anytime soon.

Closer to 1.1-1.2M.

I doubt there will ever be international service to BNA. To me, there just isnt the market for it. Nashville is the heart of country music, a/k/a The Music City....with the Grand Ol Opry and stuff. But is that enough to attract European tourists - in enough numbers to fill a daily flight? No.

Foreign tourists can easily fly to one of the other cities and then connect to a flight to BNA on an alliance carrier. Take LH to CLT, then fly US or US Ex to BNA.

I am surprised that cLT got Lufthansa. Atlanta is one of only a couple places in the south out of Florida that can attract foreigners.

Atlanta does not attract foreigners, they go to Atlanta on business trips.

There has been alot of speculation in the past about them leaving TPA, so I assumed that is on the chopping block.

Yes, that is true, there was, but British Airways put those rumours to rest in March 2002:

Since that time, they have added a fifth weekly service.

CLT got LH because US is now part of STAR. LH is handling MUC and US FRA. The code share out of CLT with US will give LH the PAX it needs, plus CLT is a big enough market to support the 330s and maybe 767s from LH

Actually, LH will be flying a 343 into CLT. So they expect even more seats
