Will REX Ever Get RJ's?

Sun Dec 14, 2003 11:39 am

As Australia's leading regional airline will REX in the forseeable future be getting RJ's? Kendall Airlines experimented with the CRJ for a few months but when Ansett collapsed were forced to dispose of them unfortunately. From what i've heard business at REX is doing pretty good and if REX expands in the future are regional jets like the EMB-135/145 and the CRJ going to be considered? There are certainly some routes where the jets could be profitable such as ADL-CBR. So yay or nay for RJ's in Oz?

As much as i would like to see some RJ's in service for REX in a way i think it would be foolish to go shopping when The Aussie aviation industry gets shaken up a little bit with the LCC Jetstar and with Paul Stoddards plans for a LCC based at MEL it could be an interesting year in 2004. If REX were to take on RJ's it wouldnt be for a couple of years until after the market settles and they can decide if it is worth it.
just my thoughts.
cheers

I would have at a guess that after Kendall's experience with the CRJ that they would be pretty stupid to select and operate that particular RJ.

In a dream world it would be nice to think that Rex will get bigger and will eventually operate something like 170's or 190's (or even 728's or 928's if they ever get to the market) but unfortunately this is the real world so it's SF340's for the foreseeable future.

See this is something i don't fully understand. Why did Kendell have such a bad experience with the CRJ? There are stacks of regionals in the USA operating the CRJ and they don't find it bad. What is it about Australia that didn't work? And i know the climate wasn't the main factor either as the CRJ's operated from sea level cities such as Adelaide,Hobart,Launceston,MEL. They use them in "Hot and high" airports in the USA.
I think Kendell's main problem with the CRJ was not so much with the aircraft and its performance but rather the fact that it was competing with 737's on the same routes.

Well for the view from the top there was an article in Australian Aviation some time ago where I think Toomey mentioned some of the problems with the CRJ. I'll see if I can find it and post some of it.

One way these things pissed pax off pretty quick on some of the routes you mention (as well as others) was when they maxed out on baggage. Believe me there is nothing more annoying than arriving at the other end and not having any or all of your baggage (and gear for work for that matter - "what Priority tag?") particularly if you have to disappear into the countryside for work after getting there and you can't because you don't have everything.
