NWA55: Diversion Due To Flight Crew Discretion

Sun Dec 14, 2003 12:46 pm

Northwest Airlines Flt. 55 from AMS to MSP is getting diverted to RST tonight. Here's what NWA flight information says:

Departs: AMS Arrives: RST
Scheduled: 4:35PM Scheduled: --
Actual: 4:35PM Estimated: 8:04PM
Aircraft: DC10-30
Status: In Flight

Departs: RST Arrives: MSP
Scheduled: -- Scheduled: 6:40PM
Estimated: 9:33PM Estimated: 10:16PM
Aircraft: DC10-30
Note: Diversion/delay due to flight crew discretion.
Flight left the gate at 9:33PM but has not taken off.
Status: Left Gate

Weather at MSP isn't the best but is certainly good enough for a DC-10 landing. Is this flight being diverted because of a medical emergency. I know that the AMS-MSP flights get a lot of passengers continuing to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Could the condition of a passenger gotten serious? If so, why wouldn't they continue to MSP?

They cancelled their flight plan to MSP at 7:42pm CST and filed one to RST at that time. They landed in RST at about 8:00pm CST. The latest is that they left the gate at 9:33pm but haven't taken off yet (9:45pm).

Diversion/delay due to flight crew discretion.

hmmmm....."flight crew discretion" could be anything. Maybe the captain wanted to visit some relatives  Smile

The captain finished his newspaper early. Drastic measures had to be taken.

It could obviously be anything. However, are there any pilots that can give some example of realistic situations where this could happen?

I'm not familiar with this incident, but I'll brainstorm some possibilities:

1) questionable fuel status (perhaps unforecast strong headwinds)
2) medical emergency (passenger or crew member)
3) mechanical issue (engine problem, hydraulic failure, etc.)
4) security issue (bomb threat, passenger comment, unruly passenger)

Ultimately it would have been some sort of safety issue that the crew determined would be best resolved by diverting to another airport.

Ok, aside from my joking.. this is almost obviously a fuel logistical stop. Burn was higher than predicted, and thus the airplane could not be re-released to destination. Have a seat while we splash on some more fuel.  Smile

I'm actually here in AMS, so I would have seen that aircraft leaving y'day!

However, I don't think "flight crew discretion" is a sufficient explanation, particularly if many pax missed connections. They'll need to come up with a better explanation.

Kaitak- usually the pax are given a better explanation, but that doesn't mean they publicly announce why on the delay reports..

I'll check with some friends @ NW..

OK...for those suspecting fuel issues, its crap. Ive worked NW055 AMS-MSP and to go to RST instead is a longer flight. We come straight down from the YQT/DLH area/north shore of lake superior, directly in to MSP. To go to RST is to continue southeastward. So, close but no cigar on the fuel ideas.
Go yakkin !!!!!!

Ok, some people I know at NW looked it up in the PARS system.. The only reason given in the system is "PILOT DELAY".. Tryign to figure out what the heck that could mean, but it is so far eluding me..

Will update as more is available..

If you know some folks at NWA, maybe you can have shed some light on this one (from another thread)...
