Isn't This Dangerous?

Mon Dec 15, 2003 1:15 pm

Why are these two planes so close to each other? Isn't there a minimum vertical seperation limit? What about TCAS wouldn't that tell the pilots to steer away? Why are they flying so close?

I think they are further than they look.

They're 1000 feet apart going the same direction... Nothing wrong with that..

Yea, closer than she really is. Must be one nice lens. If you read the caption it says she's 1000 feet below them so that's safe.

If you think that is close, just wait till 2005 when RVSM starts.....!!!!!

That photo is what RVSM will be like EMBQA...currently in the US its 2000 ft, but in that photo it is 1000 ft. which is what separation under RVSM will be...

Also remember... the 747 is a big airplane..it looks closer than it really is because of that.

You see that alot. If you ever fly to Asia from the US. When you get over Alaska. Look out your window. It is almost a scene out of the Jetson's. Biggest intersection in the sky.

I assume they are going at slightly different speeds, but one thing got me thinking.

What if the plane the photo is taken from "falls out of the sky" (sorry, don't know the proper english terminology) ?? Remember the JAL DC-10 that fell a couple of thousand feet due to clear air turbulence (?) Wouldn't that be a potential safety risk in congested airspace? If that happens to this A/C (or both), they would sure get uncomfortably close to each other!

Any airline pilots or passengers with experience from such an event?

regards,

johan

It's unlikely that one region of air will move suddenly downwards, whilst the region immediately below it stays stationary.

One time, from ORD to DFW, I was over about STL and cruising south. I was in a left window seat and was just kinda staring down. We were just above a cloud layer so there was nothing to see... or so I thought. All of a sudden a 747 tears out of the clouds headed exactly the opposite direction just to the left of our track (which is why I could see it). The separation was obviously only 1000 at that point with likely about 800 kts closure speed and it freaked me out! I didn't even have time to move... I was still sitting there, forehead pressed against the window, but my eyes were wide open just staring at the place where the plane had been moments before!
