Is CO's EWR-SDQ route that heavily traveled that it warrants using a 777. I was looking at Dec's flights and they have two flights on some days using 764's or 777 and then a 738. In January they are doing one daily 777. I just find it strange that they are using the 777 on the route. Why not have several 737 flights or 757 flights. What's the clientele of the route? Is it bus. or pleasure or a mix?

It is almost entirely VFR with some business traffic. The demographics of the market are traditionally low-yield, but not in the case of the Santo Domingo market, which is high-yielding because the US carriers that fly there (US from PHL; AA from BOS, JFK, FLL, MIA, SJU; CO from EWR) place supply well under demand (while Dominican carriers are unreliable, though LanDominicana should change that).

American Airlines sends the 777 to SDQ from BOS on Saturdays. This is because AA only operates on BOS-LHR-BOS flight on Saturdays, and instead of having the 2nd 777 that landed in BOS from LHR that morning sit around until Sunday evening, it goes to Santo Domingo. They fly multiple daily A300s to SDQ as well from MIA, SJU, and JFK. I don't about CO, but AA's A300s are the largest plane in their fleet passenger-capacity wise.

I flew out of SDQ on AA, to San Juan then on to DFW and TUS last friday (the 12th) and there was a CO 764 boarding to EWR while I was there. The OAG shows a 737-700 on that route, so I was a bit surprised. However, that's a pretty heavily travelled route, and there were no shortage of people boarding last friday.

AA will occassionally sub a 777 for a smaller aircraft during the high season from JFK to SDQ, as well, but their A-300s do go packed. AA "space banks" flights for these flights; in essence, a travel agency has to give AA a ton of business during the off-season to have access to these flights during high season.

First it's almost all (90%) folks either visiting Family in the NYC area or folks visiting family in the Dominican Republic, the Dominican Population in areas like Washington Heights has grown dramatically over the last 20 years.

They are also using the large widebodies instead of multiple 737 or 757 frequencies because of the excess cargo that folks who travel these routes to the Carribean and Latin American tend to carry from the US, people often do shopping in the US for items people can't find in their home countries. Often one person will go to Home Depot etc and purchase items to bring home for friends, family etc..

Also the Christmas season means many more packages of gifts etc that need to be transported, 777s and 767s are better suited than the 737NGs for this purpose.

Pan Am up untill their shut down in 1991 used to fly 747s during the peak season from JFK-Santo Domingo.
