Anyone Know Why This A345 Was There?

Tue Dec 16, 2003 4:42 am

Hi all,

This may sound like a silly question to ask  Big grin, but am I right in thinking that this is a one off? An EK A345 that was spotted at LGW..

Does anyone know why it was there?

I just never really associated LGW with A340's...

Many thanks,

Best Regards,

Well, I live near Gatwick and have received promotions in the post from EK advertising the 345 at LGW.

Why don't you associate LGW with 340s?

Don't forget that BA and VS operate with 340s, 777s and 747s from there!

Besides the 767s of charter airlines and 767s/777s of US airlines.

No fake, that's EK015 coming in to LGW - and it's scheduled as an A345 every day except thursday...

Well, not a site that I would see every day @ LGW... How wrong I was  Sad

You say that an A345 is scheduled every Thursday, every week?

I knew that VS operate with their A340's but thats only periodically ie: the summer or something (I think).

Jkw777, not quite - actually the other way around: it comes in daily, only on Thursdays it'll be an A332 - Monday to Wednesday and Friday to Sunday it's an A345.

At least according to Amadeus, that schedule is set until 30 April 2004 (with one change: from 1 January 2004 the once-weekly A332 will also be replaced by an A345) - after that they're back to flying 772/773/332s into LGW.

Frank

BA has (wisely) never operated an A340 from anywhere.

But why use an ultra longhaul aircraft on this route? I thought they would use it for the Australia and America nonstops?

Kl911, I guess it's probably a scheduling issue - although I could be wrong: maybe they don't have enough A345s yet to open up another long route with them, so they're using one on this rather short route...

Just a guess...

Thank you ConcordeBoy  Smile

Nice to know there's someone on my intelligence level on this forum!

I'm sure the only reason BA don't fly the 340 is because it would look ghastly in their livery.

Forgive me if Im wrong...

But I am sure Emirates were advertising earlier this year. that they are operating the A340-500's from London Gatwick to Australia (Perth, Sydney or Melbourne) via Dubai without having to change aircraft.

If I am correct this should be a good move for Emirates as no other airline offers direct flights to Australia from Gatwick.

Thanks for that info.

BA with A340's?!  Laugh out loud How silly would that livery look on that plane...

Has any one got an image of an A340 that they have created with the BA livery?

If so could I see it please Big grin Just for giggles...

They've just been delivered. Therefore, might they not be getting used to them being in operational service (witness BD's use of their A330s on MAN-LHR when they got them).

Looks like Emirates will be operating the A340-500 on a permanent basis between LGW-DXB (well atleast until 27th March 2003) on flight no 16.

Nice to see a variety of equipment on the route, you have a choice of the A340-500, A330-200 or the B777-300.

27th March 2004?  Big grin

Its going to make spotting @ LGW interesting with the possibility of an A340-500 now.

Especially for me, I haven't actually seen one with my own eyes yet  Sad

The first service by the A345 was on the 9th Dec and fog caused it to visit LHR too on a diversion. The A345's will operate to LGW until May 04 on the UAE15/16 then they will operate to Europe probably only to FRA.

Cheers

Paul
