Airlines With Biggest Int'l Market

Tue Dec 16, 2003 12:18 pm

Hi guys,

I was wondering which airlines has the biggest int'l market? I mean, more flights to other countries, more connections, code-shares, deals...
Due to everything that happened recently, and has affected the aviation, I can't imagine which airline is it...

Thanks,
Julio

I am not 100% sure but I am going to take a stab and say British Airways has the largest international market. I could be wrong though.

By what measure? Int'l as a percentage of their overall business, total number of flights classified as international, # of pax carried transborder, etc. Not trying to be a jerk, but if everyone wants to continue with these, biggest, best, most threads, at least define by what measure.

As a percentage of their overall business, an airline such as Singapore, or perhaps Cathay, would rank as #1, as their destinations are 100% international.

Jeff,

I agree that BA is probably a good bet. I would however have to disagree and say SQ, considering they don't operate any domestic services. KLM is also another airline with virtually no real domestic route structure. My two cents.

I think it is BA, the largest airline in Europe. Although, UA serves quite a few international destinations itself and when you add in its many star alliance and codeshare partners, it might just edge BA out. AF, KL and LH must be up there too. So those are my (slightly)educated guesses. I could be way off but I doubt it.

PS: I know what some of you are getting at, but given his terms, I don't think the ratio of domestic to international service was what VRG772 was after.

When I said "biggest Int'l market" I meant as more flights, not more passengers. More flights mean, consequently, more structure...

I'm not sure if BA still carries that title. The slogan "The World's Favourite Airline" was a testament to this title because for years they carried more internationally travelling passengers than any other airline but I believe this is (sadly) no longer the case.

I would say UA, BA, and LH. I'm sure SQ and CX ranks up there, too.

Without a doubt British Airways.

Los Angeles, Buenos Aires, Oslo, Dar es Salaam, Delhi, Tokyo... everything is gobbled up by their monster network. Just amazing.

Well figures from their websites suggest the following based on most recent statistics courtesy (besed on Monthly statistics of NOV or OCT 2003). Those who wish to argue BA had strong figues from the Rugby World Cup are minimal with only a marginal 10% increase from a base of 188 000 passengers.

Cathay Pacific 1.002 million pax
British Airways 2.689 million incorporating all routes. (2.12 million excluding UK internal routes)
Singapore Airlines (OCT 03) 1.229 million

So BA has it by a long shot!!!!

SQ is also 100% international. As is Icelandair (I think).

As for US based airlines, Continental serves the most international destinations.
