Anyone Else Think The Embraer 170 Is Cool?

Wed Dec 17, 2003 7:09 am

I was just wondering if any one else thought that the Embraer 170 is awesome? I haven't really heard much about this aircraft but, it looks really nice. I have heard some rumors that Southwest is looking to purchase some 170's? Any one know if any airlines have an 170's on order? How successful will this aircraft be?

I believe that this is the aircraft that will save US Airways. It's small enough for most of their short range routes, and yet not too small so they cannot generate significant amounts of yield to keep the pockets full. The size will seem very appropriate for flights less than 1.5 hours.

I really do like this a/c. I saw one of the prototypes here @ ATL a few months back (rumor has it Delta was looking at it) and I really think that Embraer could have an a/c family that will find a home in a lot of airlines' fleets. These a/c fit perfectly in between the largest RJs allowed in most scope clauses and the smallest a/c in most airlines' fleet.

Where did you hear about Delta is rumors about EMB-170 or 190. Whatever if they make decision of these new planes in the future. Hopefully, this will have orders with the new EMB-170 for another airlines and when US Airways will start deliveries for next year of 2004? Can you please comfirmed with these new planes on their way. Thanks!  Smile

Also..........You should start to see the first of the USAirways Embraer 170's anyday now too. The FAA has issued the 'Provisional' Type Certificate on the aircraft allowing USAirways to start Proving Runs, Pilot, Maintenance and Operational Training.

12/8/2003
EMBRAER 170 GAINS FAA PROVISIONAL TYPE CERTIFICATE

Embraer today announced it has been granted provisional type certification by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for the EMBRAER 170 airliner. Final type certification is expected in February 2004.
The approval clears the way for operators to begin crew training and route proving flights prior to putting the aircraft into revenue service once final certification is granted. The FAA certification follows a similar move in November by the Brazilian airworthiness authority, Centro Técnico Aeroespacial (CTA). Embraer and US Airways are currently discussing details regarding delivery dates for the first several aircraft.

“This approval by the FAA of the technical merits of the EMBRAER 170 is another important step toward full certification of the aircraft and entry into service for our customers,” said Luis Carlos Affonso, Embraer’s Senior Vice-President, Engineering and New Products Development.

US Airways is the launch customer in North America for the new EMBRAER 170, the first model in a new family of 70- to 110-seat airliners developed by Embraer. US Airways ordered 85 aircraft in May, and has options for 50 additional EMBRAER 170s.

As of September 30, 2003 the EMBRAER 170/190 family had 245 firm orders and 308 purchase options from Air Caraïbes, Alitalia, Cirrus, GECAS, JetBlue, LOT, SWISS and US Airways.

The E170/190 series has the potential to 'fragment' a lot of traffic. They can be thought of as the ultimate 'hub busters'!

I've flown on it (prototype number 5).

It's pretty good. Very comfortable.

It's a very nice, very cool looking aircraft. It does bear some resemblance to me to the A319/A320 aircraft, especially the wing and the engines look like CFM engines. From the buzz the 170/175/190/195 family is generating, looks like it's gonna be a big winner for Embraer.

Any airline already have one of those? If so, pics? If not, when can we see this with airliner colors?

Bongo,

It was just certified on the 8th of this month. Alitalia and US Airways are lauch customers and should be flying them in the next few months.

I had the luxury of going on a demo flight when it was in STL. The seats that are pictured above not only look nice, but they are incredibly comfortable. Very ergonomic. Also, you have much more room than the 33" pitch indicated. This is because the seats are mounted to the fuelage and the floor at the isle. There is no seat post in the middle of the two seats like most aircraft have. It is incredibly quiet, took off like a bull with gas, and has state of the art EVERYTHING. This aircraft is what the hub and spoke system needs. Low cost, high frequency, and can hit almost any city pair in the US. I can't wait to see these in service.

Pilotpip:

Another part of the reason why the seat felt 'incredibly comfortable' is because it is 1.25 inches wider than the standard economy Boeing seat on a 737, 757, 767 or 747. Plus with the wider aisle and the 2+2 seating, there is more personal space - and no middle seats. When I first went through the economy cabin of the E170, it struck me as being more like the business class seating than the economy seating of a 737.

It sure is a nice looking little plane, I saw a bit on it when Discovery Wings had an episode covering the recent Paris Air Show. Looked like it handles real nice, and it had an attractive look, as the pics here demonstrate.

If the rumors about Southwest (WN) showing interest are true, then it must be a _very_ impressive plane, for them to consider a mixed fleet after 30 years of straight Boeing, and only 737s at that, except for those brief experiments with 727s in the 1980s.

Wonder how she would look in Canyon Blue?

As for U.S. Airways, I hope it does pull them out of the hole they are in. I have a customer/friend who works for them @ PBI, and though I razz him about working for them, I would hate to see them fail.

Ahhhh yes the rumor mill runneth over. Delta is way to committed to the CRJ. And are not at all looking at the EMB170. EMBraer was looking at the Delta Connection carriers as potential customers but coming straight from the horses mouth as some say. Delta is not looking at it. Just to let yall rest a bit easier.

It is a really nice aircraft looks solid and really comfortable. Hope to see one someday maybe even fly on one.

just my two cents worth

I bet if Delta ever wound up operating the EMB-170 it would be under the Delta Connection banner, and not as a mainline aircraft. If the unions agreed, if not, then maybe.

I agree that I don't think Delta or Comair/ASA/whomever are going to buy any anytime soon, but having regular 50 seat CRJs and the EMB-170 is an okay fleet mix, in my opinion. They'd get rid of the CRJ-700, though, because the EMB-170 is so much more comfortable.

Embraer 170 is a really smart looking commuter aircraft. It's sleeker than other similar regional jets in operation today. I do believe this aircraft along with its bigger sibling -190 will be successful in the commuter market because of its passenger pleasing features and good economics of Embraer aircraft in general.

I like the Embraer 170 a lot! It kind of looks like the cross between a 737 and a CRJ. I hope Delta Connection will purchase some.

I think it is fabulous aircraft. I am so amazed by the comfortable looking cabin. IT would be really great on some routes that are presently served by A319/20 and 737's. I hope this helps out US AIrways. They can use them at their IT / KPIT), USA - Pennsylvania">PIT hub, and some of those flights out of PHL to neighboring NE cities.

DO you think this aircraft will do well as part of US Airways Shuttle? I think the size is perfect. The range is good. The capacity is better suited for this route than the airbus' and Boeing in my opinion.
There is something special about planes....
